App World 3 million tweet

Every few months or so RIM has announced some stats on how many downloads App World sees on average per day. Alex Kinsella, Product Manager at RIM for BlackBerry App World, mentioned on Twitter that App World is now pushing 3 million app downloads a day. That is some pretty impressive growth from RIM. Here are the stats we have learned until know with dates:

Pretty impressive work for RIM. They need to keep up this consistent growth and usage of App World to compete in the mobile game. Keep up the good work guys!

Free BlackBerry Travel App Updated to v1.0.341.99

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 01:26 AM PDT

BlackBerry Travel Update

RIM's BlackBerry Travel app, a free branded version of WorldMate, has just received its first upgrade since launching. The upgrade is just a slight version bump but still the app is pretty popular and offers many of WorldMate's features for free. The new version clocks in at 3.3MB up from 3.2MB so I cannot say if it is worth doing another download and reboot for such a slight update but who knows.

Check out the latest version of BlackBerry Travel in App World at this link. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Video of BlackBerry PlayBook Calculator and Weather App

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 08:38 PM PDT

Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video Link

CTIA news this year has been dominated with the AT&T T-Mobile and RIM has announced a launch date, venue, and price for the PlayBook. Kevin seems to really be bored out of his mind but since there really is not much new to see but he did catch quick videos of the new BlackBerry PlayBook Calculator and Weather apps. The calendar app by AccuWeather is kind of dull in my opinion but not bad. On the other hand the calculator is slick with a built in tip calculator and scientific functions!

Free Nux Shoot App Adds Timer to BlackBerry Camera

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 11:03 AM PDT

nuxshoot

I am still trying to wrap my head around how exactly you would use Nux Shoot. When Daniel mentioned Nux Shoot on the forums I gave it a whirl and I have to admit it does work. It simply adds two new menu items in the calendar for a 10 second or 5 second timer before it takes a shot. What I am still trying to figure out is a way to position my BlackBerry standing up where I could leave it for such a shot…

Check out Nux Shoot for yourself in App World. Its only a whopping 3Kb download.

BES : Duplicate Contact Lists or Calendars that do not synchronize with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 09:01 AM PDT

We've seen numerous posts on this before but as I was nosing around RIM's knowledgebase today, I came across this KB Article posted back on Feb 23, 2011. Its mainly geared towards the BES Admin's which I have no doubt have come across this on many occasions with troublesome users.

Granted there are other ways to fix the issue and its is somewhat simpler with OS 6, this will however help for the stubborn devices that just don't want to co-operate with you. The steps outline for both BES 4.1 and BES 5.0 and makes use of a handheld installable tool and custom IT Policy.

Overview for contact list duplication

The tool determines which contact list is currently synchronizing with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and assigns it as the default contact list. All other contact lists are then merged with the default, and any duplicate contact entries are automatically deleted.

Note: The additional contact lists are not removed from the BlackBerry smartphone, but are left empty, and the default contact list contains all contacts.

Note: If the smartphone uses BlackBerry® Device Software 4.5 to 4.7, the Duplicate Address Book Removal Tool will drop any orphaned group address book entries. This known issue does not apply to smartphones that use BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 to 6.0. The tool then removes itself from the smartphone. Contact lists that are associated with a BlackBerry® Internet Service account are ignored in this process and remain untouched.

Overview for calendar duplication

The tool disables the wireless synchronization option for the calendar, removes all entries from all calendars on the smartphone, and then re-enables the wireless synchronization option. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server eventually repopulates the calendar entries from the mailbox.

When the tool has completed running, it flags itself for deletion the next time that the BlackBerry® smartphone is restarted, Just make sure if you use Content Protection in your IT Policy or if it is set manually, it is disabled prior to making use of the tool.

You can find the full article and tool at the links below:

The ETA is currently 7-14 business days which fits with the April 19th release date at Best Buy. Still it makes you wonder what Best Buy being the "Preferred PlayBook Retailer" means. Here is what Staples has to say about the preorder:

Opera Mini61Opera Mini63

Tal let me know that Opera has released Opera Mini 6 today! This new version brings a slick look to Opera Mini along with a few other features. I have to admit I have not really played with Opera Mini since BlackBerry 6 was released but it definitely warrants a second look now. The new version 6 of Opera Mini includes:

  • A fresh new look – Opera Mini 6 sports a new and improved design, including a new skin, and new zoom and jump buttons for easy touch-navigation.
  • Share – Share links directly to major social network sites as you browse, directly from Opera Mini 6.
  • YouTube support – Click any Mobile YouTube video to launch it directly on your device’s native media player (if available).
  • Improved zoom for touch screens – Pinch-to-zoom is now supported for multitouch devices. Regular touch devices now zoom with a double-tap, or with Opera’s new zoom buttons.
  • Tailored to Tablets – We’ve designed a new user interface especially for tablet users.
  • Open Link in Background – Read your news uninterrupted and utilize the power of tabs by opening new links in the background.
  • Better Font Support – We’ve been working hard to improve the selection and rendering of Asian fonts, including Thai and Arabic.

You can download the latest Opera Mini 6 from your BlackBerry at this link or read more about the release here from your PC.

Rumor: RIM Offering Same Incentive for Employees Developing PlayBook Apps?

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 06:55 AM PDT

PlayBook_Angle_1

I have always said that RIM would make a killing if it simply allowed and encouraged employees to develop apps for their platforms. There are quite a few app developers out there who are actually RIM employees trying to make a few bucks on the side. From what I understand this was a bit tricky because RIM, like many other companies, has terms in their contract that discourage this. Usually employment contracts state something along the lines of them having a claim to anything created by an employee related to work even not during work hours. Many companies have changed these clauses recently but I just heard that RIM may have also done something similar.

According to one of our sources RIM is offering their employees an incentive program similar to the public one. They are offering employees a free BlackBerry PlayBook if their get their app approved by March 31st which is the same as the public offer for developers. They have also thrown in a bonus "Secret Prize" for the employee with the most apps.

I have not been able to confirm the internal incentive program (still working on that) but if it is not true RIM better implement one fast. Many of these employees have the knowledge to create some of the best PlayBook apps out there which could really help RIM at launch. I know it is a bit unfair pitting 3rd party devs against RIM employees but for now it is all about BOTH quality and volume. 3rd party devs will be able to catch up once they have access to an actual device.

What do you think?

BlackBerry PlayBook Launches April 19th – Preorder from Best Buy

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 04:43 AM PDT

BlackBerry PlayBook Preorder Best Buy

RIM dropped another piece of news on the BlackBerry PlayBook this morning. They announced the US and Canada launch date and pricing for the BlackBerry PlayBook together with Best Buy. Best Buy is "a preferred retailer for the BlackBerry PlayBook" and they have opened up preorders for all three models of the BlackBerry PlayBook in the US and Canada.

As we said before the BlackBerry PlayBooks featuring 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of storage are priced at $499, $599, and $699 respectively. It is scheduled to be available in stores on April 19th though you can preorder it now from the links below. RIM is wording their announcements stating that you can "Get it first" at Best Buy which more or less confirms the April 19th launch date. I am not sure what pushed the Q1 launch date well into Q2 territory but hopefully RIM has some more good surprises planned.

They have also confirmed that it will be available in more than 20,000 retail outlets in the US and Canada. The pricing is nothing mind blowing but its toe to toe with the Apple iPad:
