Foursquare for BlackBerry Gets Another Bump to v1.9.96

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 02:14 AM PDT

Foursquare

Foursquare seems to be actively developing their BlackBerry app though we have yet to see the BBM Social Platform integration they showed off at BlackBerry World. Erica let me know that Foursquare got another small version jump to v1.9.96 which fixes a few bugs. From what I hear this version fixed some connection issues users were having along with other fixes.

You can pick up the update at foursquare.com/blackberry/beta

Justin Bieber Gets a Free News App – Actually Looks Good…

I am not sure what to think of this one though I guess it was inevitable. There is now a Justin Bieber app in App World. At first I thought it might be a fan made app that slipped past RIM's crack squad of world class App World reviewers but that does not look to be the case. This app was developed by Doapp which has 217 other legit news apps in App World not to mention the fact that the app actually looks good.

I won't go as far as installing this app on my BlackBerry but you can if you so wish. Sadly Doapp only offers one line as a description of the app:

Your mobile source for up-to-date news about Justin Bieber.

I guess that sums it up… though for some odd reason the app is only available in India and the United States. Check out the free Justin Bieber app in App World here.

RIM Can Innovate by Adding 3rd Party Browser Addons or Plugins

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 03:12 PM PDT

Addons

Over the years I have been waiting for RIM to rear their creative heads and start pushing the mobile space further than their usual limits. They have truly started doing this with the BlackBerry PlayBook but the device lacks signature features like email and BBM on the BlackBerry smartphones. It does Flash, web browsing, multitasking, etc very well but what I want is RIM to start leading the pack with features. The specific feature I have in mind for RIM to do first is allow for 3rd party browser plugins.

If any of you have used Firefox or Google Chrome you are probably familiar with what Firefox calls addons and what Google Chrome calls extensions but I will simply call them addons from now on. These addons let 3rd party developers extend the BlackBerry browser to do things it could not normally do or would require RIM to build it into the current OS. While Mozilla really made addons popular with Firefox I hope RIM can bring the same concept to the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Here is a sample of some of my favorite addons in Firefox:

  • KeeFox – While I used to use LastPass password manager they were hacked recently. KeeFox performs many of the same functions allow me to save my passwords so I don't have to keep entering them in on my PlayBook!
  • AutoFill Forms – This addon speaks for itself. I would love if I could autofill forms on my PlayBook.
  • XMarks Sync – One of my favorite features in my browser is keeping all of my bookmarks in sync between them all. This is a must have plugin for RIM.
  • FlashBlock – While I think Flash support is awesome it does use CPU and slow down page load speeds. I really wish RIM would allow a developer to be able to let you toggle Flash elements like you can with FlashBlock.
  • UserAgent Switcher – This addon allows me to change how my browser identifies itself to servers. For example, I can make servers think my desktop browser is a BlackBerry PlayBook. I would love to be able to do the opposite on my PlayBook.

There are a ton more but this is exactly what I am talking about. These are the features users expect in a full fledged browser and except for Firefox for Android nobody has done them on a smartphone or tablet yet. With RIM showing off Web Inspector it seems like they finally do have the ability to give developers access to these functions. It would be really awesome if very soon we could install browser addons from App World…

What do you think about browser addons for the PlayBook or even BlackBerry smartphones?

Don’t Even Reply: Incompetent BlackBerry Repairman… (Parody)

BlackBerry Melted Dont Even Reply

David sent me a link this week to a parodied email exchange on DontEvenReply.com between a cellphone repairman and a potential customer. I was on the floor laughing when I first read it and I am sure you will too. I am not even sure how he managed to burn that BlackBerry without it totally melting… Can anybody tell what model it is? My guess is a 88XX series.

NOTE: The language is a bit vulgar on the sites below so please use your own best judgment on if you should read it in public. You will also end up laughing so hard your stomach will hurt…

Read the Don't Even Reply – Incompetent Phone Repairman exchange and let me know what you think! If you like it check out the full list of exchanges at www.dontevenreply.com. I highly recommend you check out especially the disguised weapons one.

RIM Explains How to Debug WebWorks Apps Using Web Inspector & Other Tools

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 11:11 AM PDT

IMG_00000130

We broke the news of Web Inspector coming preloaded on the BlackBerry PlayBook before its launch back in mid April. I absolutely love this feature and can't wait for when BlackBerry OS 7 brings it to BlackBerry devices too. It is what allows us to create and debug BlackBerry sites like the BerryReview PlayBook Edition site.

Until now RIM has been sort of quiet about how to use Web Inspector especially when it comes to using it to debug BlackBerry WebWorks applications on the PlayBook. Until then many developers were using Firebug Lite which works but does not offer as broad of a feature set. Now RIM shows us how to compile BlackBerry WebWorks apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook with Web Inspector enabled.

They also feature three other tools that can be used to help with debugging including:

  • Weinre – Weinre (Web Inspector Remote)
  • Firebug Lite – Firebug Lite is a JavaScript framework that is designed to be used to add debugging & profiling capabilities to web applications
  • Jsconsole.com – JSConsole.com is a remote service created by Remy Sharp that can be used to configure your BlackBerry WebWorks content to load a remote JavaScript file that shares output from console.log().

If you develop WebWorks apps for the PlayBook or plan on it I highly recommend checking out Adam Stanley's guide on the RIM developer blog.

TI Announces OMAP 4470 Processor at 1.8Ghz – Possibilities for the PlayBook?

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 10:10 AM PDT

OMAP 4 4470 Processor

TI announced a new top player in their OMAP 4 processor lineup. In case you missed it the BlackBerry PlayBook runs a TI OMAP 4 processor at 1Ghz called the 4430. There is a 4440 which runs at 1.5Ghz but RIM did not go for that one. On the other hand this new 1.8Ghz OMAP 4470 could almost double the processing power for the BlackBerry PlayBook in future larger 10 inch designs with larger batteries.

TI touts that this new 4470 processor offers:

Customers designing ultrathin laptops, tablets or smartphones around previously released OMAP 4 processors (OMAP4430 and OMAP4460 processors) gain the added benefit of pin-to-pin hardware and software compatibility for maximum re-use and faster time-to-market

The new 4470 processor bumps up performance with:

  • Two ARM Cortex-A9 MPCores running up to 1.8GHz per core for an 80% increase in Web browsing performance
  • Two ARM Cortex-M3 cores – Smart multicore processing optimized for low-power and real-time responsiveness
  • SGX544 graphics core – 2.5x overall graphics performance increase; support for DirectX, OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenVG 1.1, and OpenCL 1.1
  • Hardware composition engine with dedicated 2D graphics core – Frees GPU to manage intensive tasks; maximizes power-efficiency
  • Supports as many as three HD displays and up to QXGA (2048×1536) resolution; HDMI supporting stereoscopic 3D
  • Dual-channel, 466 MHz LPDDR2 memory – Higher memory bandwidth enables rendering and compositing of multilayer content at high resolutions
  • Complete pin-to-pin hardware and software compatibility – Rapid transition and maximum re-use of investment from OMAP4430 and OMAP4460 processors

Who knows if RIM will actually use the OMAP 4470 processor but its great to see that its there. One of RIM's biggest problems in the past was using Marvel's processor in their phones which did not have a good upgrade path without rewriting parts of the OS like they just had to for BlackBerry OS 7. That is why RIM decided to dump Marvel more or less in future phones except for the upcoming Curve Apollo. On the other hand there is still TI's OMAP5 processors that will supposedly run at 2Ghz with dual cores.

The question truly is if the PlayBook really needs a faster processor now. What I really want to see is more RAM in the device since it seems to run out when you run too many apps concurrently.

BalliesShoot Brings Simple Fun to the BlackBerry PlayBook

Jim pointed out a fun game to me called BalliesShoot for my BlackBerry PlayBook. I love games like this because they are so easy to pick up and don't have complex controls. You simply touch the left or right side of the screen to control your "Ballie" in each direction. The Ballie shoots while you move him to get all of the invaders moving down the screen while avoiding their missiles.

For $0.99 I thought BalliesShoot was a pretty sweet deal. You can find it in App World here.

It is always interesting to see how RIM engages their enterprise customers which is why their latest BlackBerry Innovation webcast series that started yesterday is interesting. They promise that through the series "You’ll discover new and innovative knowledge about the BlackBerry solution and the all new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet." The first webinar yesterday covered QNX and the BlackBerry Tablet and the next three webinars also cover the PlayBook. Next weeks webinar takes an "Enterprise-Deep Dive" into the BlackBerry PlayBook which should be interesting to hear.

RIM really has quite a bit more to say about the PlayBook once native email and PIM come. They will also come with IT Policies and the need for being able to manage BlackBerry PlayBooks once they start storing enterprise information and have 4G connections.

Trick Out Your BlackBerry PlayBook With a Sking from GelaSkins

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 05:40 AM PDT

190_GelaSkins_Standby_500-white

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of GelaSkins. One of the first things that people do when they see my BlackBerry is ask me about the GelaSkin. It simply makes my BlackBerry easy to spot and differentiate from the crowd of devices. Tracy let me know that GelaSkins is now also offering skins for the BlackBerry PlayBook. I am not sure when they started offering them but I definitely want one.

The skins look really slick but personally I would get the one I have pictured at the top of this article. It simply makes me laugh. :) Check out all of the GelaSkins for the BlackBerry PlayBook at this link and let us know what you get!
