BlackBerry PlayBook Launches in India – International Rollout Continues Posted: 22 Jun 2011 02:12 PM PDT RIM has been making good on their promise to bring the BlackBerry PlayBook to 16 additional markets. Their latest addition is India where they are now selling the BlackBerry PlayBook. The PlayBook is plastered all over the BlackBerry India homepage and Facebook page for the launch. Shahzoor from BBIn.in let me know the pricing at: BlackBerry PlayBook 16GB (WiFi model) – Rs. 27,990 It will be really interesting to see how the BlackBerry PlayBook takes off internationally because in many countries the Bridge feature is a godsend. The PlayBook doesn't need its own data plan to get email and browse the web which is a big cost consideration. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Verizon’s Stingy New Data Plans Detailed Fully in Latest Leak Posted: 22 Jun 2011 11:51 AM PDT We have already heard rumors and confirmation from Verizon about their upcoming data tiers but it is all starting to get official now. The new plans go into effect on July 7th and in this case you really do get less GB for your buck. AndroidCentral scored a few data sheets along with an employee email about the new plans. Verizon is even throwing in an extra "Screw You" by changing the business discounts to only apply to the data plan on the primary line and are mostly only 20% despite what other discounts you may have on service. What we do know now is that current unlimited plan customers will be grandfathered into their "Unlimited" 5GB plans even if you upgrade devices. If you sign up with a new plan or want to add unlimited data you still can until July 7th. After then if you create a new data plan or add another line with a data plan there will be no unlimited option. If you needed any more reason to think that the AT&T and T-Mobile merger would be bad for competition and raise rates then look no further than this. At least AT&T cut $5 off their "unlimited" plans when they brought it down from 5GB to 2GB. You can check out the full email sent to indirect resellers and analysis over at AndroidCentral If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Developer Successfully Ports SSH Client to PlayBook (First Steps) Posted: 22 Jun 2011 09:55 AM PDT I have been watching the PlayBook development scene with great interest since the device launched. RIM has been slow at releasing the BlackBerry PlayBook Native SDK which is promised to come this summer. Still that has not stopped devs from pushing the envelope. Marc Paradise, developer of the popular free BBSSH client, detailed some of his latest developments in our forums. He has confirmed that he has successfully compiled and built a basic SSH client on his BlackBerry PlayBook using a native ARM binary to port libssh over to QNX with a simple front end. Currently this client can only be executed from an SSH session to the BlackBerry PlayBook so it is of limited use other than a proof of concept. Still its a big step proving the usefulness of POSIX compliance on the QNX OS. It also may mean that developers will have a way to create apps for the PlayBook without waiting for the native SDK to launch. Check out the details on Marc's blog or discuss it in the forums. RIM Starts Highlighting Their #AppOfTheWeek On Twitter Posted: 22 Jun 2011 08:37 AM PDT One of our readers, Jill, let us know that RIM has started highlighting their BlackBerry "App of the Week" on Twitter using the hashtag #AppOfTheWeek. I have been asking RIM to do something like this for awhile to highlight their current favorite apps beyond the carousel in App World to help with app discovery. I may be wrong but it looks like they started this last week with the game Pinball Deluxe for BlackBerry as you can see above. This week it looks like they have decided to highlight both a BlackBerry smartphone and PlayBook app for the week. I am loving Humans vs Aliens on my BlackBerry but I am definitely going to check out Papa's Burgeria on my PlayBook. Let us know what you think RIM's App of the Week picks should be next week! Free Idea Catch Quick Note App for the PlayBook Posted: 22 Jun 2011 08:09 AM PDT While I have found myself using Word to Go for some quick note taking Ashley pointed out Idea Catch to me. This free app by Mad Corgi Software is intended to easily jot down an idea before it is flushed out of your head. You can then use the app to add notes to your idea and store them for later reference. I have been doing something like this with Memos on my BlackBerry for awhile but I have been trying out Idea Catch today with good results. You can pick up the free Idea Touch app in App World here. Developer Note: Tap on the cursor to bring up the keyboard in the Description and Note edit fields. An update will be released soon to improve the keyboard behavior. PSA: Certain BlackBerry Torch OS Versions Cause “Rapid Battery Drain” Posted: 22 Jun 2011 06:51 AM PDT I had a few friends mention that their BlackBerry Torch battery has been worse than usual in the last few months and I just thought their battery was starting to deteriorate. It turns out that they may have a known BlackBerry Torch OS issue confirmed by RIM today. To summarize RIM says that certain BlackBerry OS builds for the Torch suffer "from rapid battery drain and overall sluggishness due to the phone application using high amount of CPU." These exact OS builds are between OS 6.0.0.526 to 6.0.0.536. What is really disturbing about this is that OS 6.0.0.526 is the current OFFICIAL OS build for the AT&T BlackBerry Torch on the BlackBerry download site. RIM is recommending you downgrade but I highly recommend you upgrade to the latest leaked OS 6.0.0.600 or other recent releases from other carriers. If you need help with that let us know in the comments or the forums. To figure out what OS version your Torch is running just start writing an email and type myver in the subject or body and it will show you the version number as 9800/6.0.0.XXX. Here is the full issue from RIM's knowledge base: BlackBerry Torch 9800 battery suffers rapid battery drain due to Phone application utilizing high CPUArticle ID: KB27412 Overview The BlackBerry® Torch™ 9800 suffers rapid battery drain and overall sluggishness due to the Phone application utilizing high amount of CPU. Environment
This is a previously reported issue that is being investigated by our development team. No resolution time frame is currently available. Downgrade the smartphone operating system to a previously known working version. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

QuickView Pro Lets You Preview Email and SMS with Popups Posted: 22 Jun 2011 06:33 AM PDT The whole idea of popups for notifications started as a trend awhile back and the apps for it have grown more complex as they develop. That is why I was intrigued by QuickView Pro when one of our readers pointed it out. Ahaz Designs has gone back to the basics and simply offered an app that will popup a preview of email or SMS with your own preset size, color, and length of notification. It lacks the extra features found in similar apps like BerryPopup but it has the basics done right. The $0.99 price point is also nice in simple for QuickView Pro in App World. S4BB Flip Silent App Free For One Month for Torch & Storm Users Posted: 22 Jun 2011 05:58 AM PDT After the success of their Rotation Lock app free launch promotion S4BB is following up with their next app Flip Silent. We have seen apps like Flip Silent before which simply lets you silence your BlackBerry by physically turning your phone face down. When you flip it back it returns to your previous profile. They did not state exactly when this free month is over but until then you can pick it up in the store and in App World. Because of the need for an accelerometer this only works with BlackBerry Torch, Storm, and Storm 2 devices. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
