T-Mobile Fires Back at Sprint – Claims Spectrum Crunch is Real Posted: 22 Jun 2011 03:07 AM PDT After Sprints claims yesterday you just knew that AT&T and T-Mobile would have to respond. We haven't heard anything from AT&T yet but T-Mobile sent us their "Comments on New FCC Filings by AT&T/T-Mobile Merger Opponents." T-Mobile claims that these opponents have failed to provide any "credible arguments" and said the opponents have their "head in the sand insistence that no spectrum crisis exists." Funny stuff either way. The thing is AT&T and T-Mobile might have a strong case about how more spectrum is necessary but does anybody think that customers will come out ahead in this deal? Check out the full statement below: T-Mobile Comments on New FCC Filings by AT&T/T-Mobile Merger Opponents BELLEVUE, Wash – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Today, Tom Sugrue, T-Mobile Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, issued the following statement: "The opponents of the AT&T-T-Mobile merger have had their final say as part of the FCC's formal pleading cycle and, not surprisingly, they have failed to offer any credible arguments to support their view that the Commission should deny the transaction. What is surprising, however, is their repeated head-in-the-sand insistence that no spectrum crisis exists. As part of their application, AT&T and T-Mobile provided a compelling showing of their need for more spectrum to continue to provide quality service to customers and roll out new technologies in the future. And the two companies have demonstrated that a combination of their networks and spectrum holdings is by far the best way to solve this problem and ensure improved service and enhanced innovation. The FCC has long acknowledged the harmful consequences of ignoring the spectrum crunch, and we are confident it will approve our proposed market-based solution." The Joy of Tech Takes a Crack at RIM’s Co-CEOs Posted: 21 Jun 2011 08:28 PM PDT RIM has been getting a ton of flack since BlackBerry World over their co-CEO structure. Nobody really had issues with it for years and suddenly its a hot button issue. Some investors are making noise about RIM's CEO's stepping down but just ask Apple and Microsoft how well it works out when a founding CEO steps down. Either way I thought you guys would want to see this courtesy of AllThingsD: If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Updated BlackBerry IM Clients v2.5.85 Found in Leaked OS 7 Posted: 21 Jun 2011 03:49 PM PDT
You can sometimes count on OS leaks to bring some fun surprises to the party. The latest leak of OS 7.0.0.176 for the unreleased BlackBerry Bold 9900 brought us some new IM clients. Thanks to the team at BBH-Plus we have Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger updated to v2.5.85. They setup some OTA download and desktop download links along with OTA links but have only tested this version with OS 6+. Still you should only install this if you are willing to deal with the consequences if it goes bad…
Thanks to everyone that sent this in via BBEmpire If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Handmark TweetCaster Gets New Beta For The Price of a Tweet Posted: 21 Jun 2011 02:13 PM PDT Tweetcaster was released by Handmark back in mid-2009 without much of a flurry beyond charging a "tweet" for the app. Ashley let us know that they have updated their app with a new beta that once again only costs a tweet. I am not sure how I feel about that but the app is pretty slick though it is a bit slow. They seem to be having some fun throwing a jab at Seesmic by saying they are just getting started for BlackBerry while others are abandoning it. Features of Tweetcaster include: Multiple Twitter account support ♦ Simultaneous posting to Twitter and Facebook ♦ Retweet with or without comment ♦ Manage Twitter lists ♦ Advanced profile editing ♦ Nearby/Geolocation functionality ♦ Save and manage drafts ♦ Advanced search ♦ Full trending topics ♦ Share tweets to email, SMS or Facebook ♦ All standard Twitter functions—reading timeline, viewing profiles, sending tweets, clicking links If you have a BlackBerry OS 5.0 or higher, you can pick up Tweetcaster for the price of a tweet at tweetcaster.com. More details on their blog. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

BlackBerry Bold 9900 OS 7.0.0.176 Found Online Posted: 21 Jun 2011 02:06 PM PDT Most users don't really have any benefit from an OS for an unreleased device but still its fun to look through. Verizon Confirms the Death of Unlimited Data Plans in July Posted: 21 Jun 2011 12:12 PM PDT When we mentioned the rumored upcoming data plans from Verizon yesterday I was hoping it was wrong. Verizon has come out and confirmed once again that unlimited tiered data plans are out. While they didn't come out and say the exact pricing they confirmed to AllThingsD that unlimited plans are being killed off starting next month. They promise to share more later but if the plans are anywhere near what was rumored then new Verizon customers are in for a miserly data budget or fatter bills. If you are on Verizon or plan to be and use a nice chunk of data you may want to consider getting one of the current unlimited plans ASAP. I am really starting to hate these new data caps. First unlimited data became 5GB and now it is going down to 2GB for that same price. It makes you wonder if data is going to cost more or less as time goes on… As a reminder here are the rumored data plans compared to AT&T’s offerings

Free Playbook Video Downloader (Sideload Only) Posted: 21 Jun 2011 11:12 AM PDT
Once you load the app this is your initial screen. Here you will see the recently watched videos (by everyone) and a search bar. Use the search bar to browse/download videos. In the example I searched "Kanye West" You can now see Pages worth of videos relating to your search. I selected 'All of The Lights" I can now Watch the video by clicking it or download by clicking "download" in the top left corner. You can also browse related videos on the far right sidebar. Once you click download you are given the following options. When AVAILABLE you can download high quality 720P and 1080P video. But not all videos have this option. Sometimes, if the videos is very poor quality and doesn't have a mp4 (even 480P) option you will not be able to download it. F.A.Q. If you enjoy the Application please Donate to support the developers and servers which are required to make this app run. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

QNX Powered Robot Competing for Trip to the Moon in Google Lunar X Contest Posted: 21 Jun 2011 10:26 AM PDT I am always amazed by the different technologies powered by the QNX platform. The latest highlighted on the onQNX blog is a group working on an unmanned robot to send to the moon. This is all part of Google's Lunar X challenge which requires contestants to land their rover on the moon and beam back videos to get the base $20 million prize. That goes up to $30 million if the rover can drive at least 5000 meters, survive two weeks of minus 182 degrees C, and take a picture of the Apollo landing site. There is one team, The Part-Time Scientists, who have been working on that project in their spare time. The interesting twist is that they are using QNX to handle the real time activities of their rover called "Asimov". They are supposedly considered to be in the top 5 of the 30 contestants who are most likely to succeed. Check out more details about the project from Paul @OnQNX or directly from The Part-Time Scientists website, Twitter feed, or Facebook page. Sprint: AT&T Doesn’t Need T-Mobile If They Used Spectrum Correctly Posted: 21 Jun 2011 09:28 AM PDT The ongoing debate about AT&T's acquisition of T-Mobile USA is a fun fight to watch. The latest salvo from Sprint, the carrier with the most to lose from this deal, tries to nip AT&T's reasoning for the acquisition in the bud. Reuters is reporting that Sprint plans on presenting the FCC with a "Technical analysis detailing the actions AT&T could take to improve its network without acquiring T-Mobile USA." While I have heard from many industry experts that AT&T does a shoddy job of optimizing their network they have always claimed it is a lack of spectrum. Sprint's solution calls for AT&T to increase its network capacity by 600% by using its current spectrum efficiently. Specifically Sprints statement said: "AT&T could increase its capacity by developing its warehoused spectrum, accelerating its 4G network buildout, and implementing a more efficient network architecture." Its kind of funny to hear Sprint telling AT&T how to run their network especially since Sprint has outsourced their own network management. I can't wait to see what comes out next from these companies… via Reuters via BGR – Img credit: There I Fixed It If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Jungle Defense Tower Defense Game for the PlayBook Posted: 21 Jun 2011 09:07 AM PDT I have been hunting for solid tower defense games for my BlackBerry PlayBook. The latest I stumbled across is Jungle Defense by Insane hero. It has some awesome gameplay and is truly fun. The one complaint I have about the game is that it does not take up the whole screen on the PlayBook since it was obviously designed originally for another platform. Still for $0.99 in App World, Jungle Defense is a great game. Hopefully they will see sales take off and format the game properly for a widescreen device. Free Hanoi Towers PlayBook Game Makes You Think Posted: 21 Jun 2011 07:04 AM PDT I always like games that test my mind instead of how fast I can tap or swipe a screen. The latest game I have found is called Hanoi Towers which is a classic game with quite a few names like the Towers of Brahma. I remember playing a wooden version of it years ago but it is still just as fun. The object of the game is to move the stack of disks from the left rod to the right rod following these rules:
With three or four disks it is pretty easy but trust me it gets really hard. What I think is the most impressive part is I as far as I can tell this is a WebWorks built web app. Cool right? You can pick up Hanoi Towers free in App World here. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Starts “Headcount Reduction” With 200 Laid Off in Waterloo Posted: 21 Jun 2011 06:48 AM PDT The latest rumor circulated by the Waterloo Region Record (Via Reuters) is that the "headcount reduction" RIM mentioned on their earnings call has started. According to CBC News these layoffs are mostly in manufacturing which is odd since that is where you would think RIM would be focusing on a trifecta of R&D, manufacturing, and development to "accelerate product introduction." On the other hand they may be simply getting rid of dead weight if you consider that RIM has over 17,000 employees with 9,000 in Waterloo. I was really gunning for RIM firing the third of the RIM legal team that holds up all of their projects but here is to hoping for next time. My condolences to those who were laid off. I hope you find promising opportunities elsewhere. You can discuss what you think of these layoffs in the forums. Thanks Brian & Ashley for sending this one in.
