DreamBerry: RIM Should Add Push to Talk Features to BBM Posted: 08 Jun 2011 06:04 AM PDT While writing up about the new LoudTalks push to talk service I could not help but think about BBM. RIM could have a real hit on their hands if they integrated push to talk features to BBM. I know that it would be walking a fine line in terms of keeping carriers happy but in this mobile game it is either innovate or deteriorate. RIM did a brilliant job of adding Groups to BBM but I think adding voice or better yet video streaming would make it 10 times cooler! BBM already has the infrastructure to send peer messages and audio files between devices. I already know people who use the BBM voice note feature to send messages back and forth. It would be downright brilliant if RIM would simply add half duplex push to talk groups to BBM. It would be a huge hit for businesses who have been looking for a more modern push to talk groups solution. Better yet would be the ability to streamline taking a video and streaming it to multiple people in a group. What do you think? Do you see RIM ever adding push to talk voice capabilities to BBM? I am kind of curious to see if a developer will be able to create their own push to talk service using the new BBM peering APIs… If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Avoid Parking Tickets with Free Double Parked Timer App Posted: 07 Jun 2011 03:05 PM PDT BelowZeroSoft let us know about their latest creation called Double Parked. The app performs a very simple function and performs it with style. It simply lets you punch in what kind of parking area you left your car it and create a timed countdown to when you need to move your car. It really is that simple but they add a bit of flair with custom alarms that are easy to set. You can pick up the free Double Parked app in the store at this link If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

SugarSync for BlackBerry Updated to v2.0 Posted: 07 Jun 2011 01:00 PM PDT It has been almost a year since SugarSync updated their BlackBerry app to v1.5. Luis pointed out to me that my favorite cloud synching solution has updated their BlackBerry app to v2.0 under the radar. I am not sure what is new in this update but I am currently downloading it. From the feature list it does not look like they have finally added auto synching to the BlackBerry but hopefully that is coming along with a PlayBook client. You can pick up the updated SugarSync v2.0 in App World. Let us know what you find since there does not seem to be a change log I can find. If you don't already have a SugarSync account I highly recommend setting one up since in my opinion it beats out the competitors like DropBox and offers 5GB of free storage. BlackBerry Business Cloud Services Detailed by RIM in Latest Doc Posted: 07 Jun 2011 10:29 AM PDT One of our sources let us know that RIM has put up a document highlights their BlackBerry Business Cloud Services features and technical details. This is the most information I have seen come out of RIM about their new service that essentially offers a free hosted BES for companies that use Microsoft Office 365 hosting. From what I can see this is a pretty impressive feature set and I can see companies using it for a quick Exchange + BES rollout. Check out the details in this PDF from RIM. Create 16 Color Avatars With Free Profixel BlackBerry App Posted: 07 Jun 2011 09:14 AM PDT Fabian Heuwieser released a new app over the weekend in App World called Profixel. The free app offers two templates for you to create your own 16 color pixel avatar. Its not the craziest high graphic app but it is fun to play with. You can then share your avatar on Facebook or via email if you make something cool. You can download Profixel at this link in App World If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Easily Translate Any Website with the Google Translate Bookmarklet Posted: 07 Jun 2011 06:59 AM PDT I have gotten quite hooked on bookmarklets since I discovered that they work nicely on the WebKit browser in BlackBerry OS 6. The latest one I have been playing with is a Google Translate bookmarklet. I happen to read a few Spanish, Hebrew, and other language sites and find I sometimes need a rough translator in the browser. Google was kind enough to give me the starting point with what they call Google Translation Browser buttons but they sadly did not work for me on the BlackBerry Browser though they do work in Firefox. I found I had to edit the code a bit to get it to work properly for me. I created two different bookmarklets for English translation with one that opens it up in a new window and one that replaces the current window with the translation: The bookmarklet is smart enough to know if you have text highlighted if you only want to translate the highlighted text. If you need help making one of the many other Google Translate languages work let me know. It is relatively painless replacing the main to "location.href" references with "window.open" for a new window or "window.location.replace" for the same window. I also found it worked better if I replaced the equal sign after that method with prentices. For example Google's Browser button for Spanish translation of Becomes this for a new window or this for the same window

RIM Acquires Scoreloop Social Gaming Toolkit Developer Posted: 07 Jun 2011 06:40 AM PDT RIM's acquisition train keeps on running strong. They just announced on their developer blog that they have acquired Scoreloop. If you have never heard of Scoreloop before then you are in the same boat with me. From my quick research is seems like they are not a game developer or publisher but rather provide a toolkit for game developers to make their games more social. RIM clearly states that they purchased Scoreloop because they are a pioneer in social gaming and offer a cross platform social mobile gaming developer toolkit which you can read about at www.scoreloop.com. They plan on using this knowledge to help developers create "social app experiences" through the BBM Social Platform they have been rolling out. The Scoreloop team will be working on providing tools to "further enable our developer community to take gaming to a new level of social integration on the BlackBerry Platform." Pretty cool stuff! Now if only RIM would buy about 20 app and game developers and get them to release a new PlayBook and BlackBerry app every week… If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
