Free MapSearch Version Offers Basic Google Maps for PlayBook Users

Posted: 15 Feb 2012 01:58 AM PST

MapSearch

One of the things missing on my PlayBook is a solid GPS app that compares to BlackBerry or Google Maps on my smartphone. Sandsoft has been working on a stopgap solution for now that works relatively well based on Google Maps V3 JavaScript API but until now you had to pay $2.99 for a pro version. Kiran from Sandsoft let us know that they have released a free version of MapSearch to fill in that gap. The free version includes many of the features of the pro version except for things like driving directions and places search.

Hopefully RIM is working on bringing BlackBerry, Google, or Bing maps to the PlayBook natively. Until then you can check out the free version of MapSearch here in App World.

CompRemote Lite: Control Your Computer From Your PlayBook For Free!

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 10:42 PM PST

I just came across this extremely useful utility app for my PlayBook. It is called CompRemote Lite and once configured, turns your PlayBook into a trackpad complete with left click, right click and scrolling features that controls your computer! I am preparing to start student teaching soon and have been looking for excuses…I mean reasons to use my PlayBook in the classroom. This is a perfect app to allow me freedom to move around the class as I control the computer from my PlayBook. I’m sure many of you can think of other ways to use this as well. Any presentation and messing with co-workers, friends and family are a couple that come to mind right away.

The app looks like the screenshot above with one exception: there is a broken line along the right side of the screen that allows for scrolling. This was added in an update. You can also input text using the PlayBook keyboard by using the standard swipe from the bottom left corner gesture. Overall, the performance is quite impressive with only a short lag between touching the PlayBook screen and moving the pointer on your computer.

Setup is simple once you figure it out.

  1. Install CompRemote Lite on your PlayBook
  2. Download the java app on your computer here
  3. Open the java app and enter your PlayBook’s password. If you do not have a password (shame on you :D ) enter 0000
  4. Click start
  5. Type the IP address that comes up in the jave app in the CompRemote app on your PlayBook
  6. Enter your PlayBook password
  7. Click OK
  8. Voila! You’re connected to the computer!
Let us know how you will use CompRemote lite on your PlayBook!

Get CompRemote Lite for free at App World

JoyBits Releases Popular Doodle God Game for PlayBook OS 2.0

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 02:17 PM PST

Doodle God Doodle God2

These are the types of games and apps RIM is hoping to attract to the BlackBerry Platform. One of the good examples is Doodle God from JoyBits which they just ported to the BlackBerry PlayBook. In case you are not familiar this game is sort of like Alchemy where you mix and match different elements to create things. Its sort of a fast pace puzzle game that is easy to pickup but hard to beat.

You can now find Doodle God in App World for $1.99. Hopefully a free version will also be coming soon though they do that with in app payments on other platforms so it might be awhile.

BlackBerry Desktop Software v7.0 B44 Officially Released for PCs

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 01:43 PM PST

Desktop Manager

RIM released BlackBerry Desktop Software v7.0 in the Beta Zone back in November of last year. Vodafone then sort of released it on their website in January but RIM was nice and hush about it. Now RIM has officially made Desktop Manager v7.0 official on their website and available to all for download. This version is 7.0 B44 and was just released today along with a bunch of knowledge base articles about it that you can find below. I have not found the change log for this release but it is supposed to improve sync to desktop apps.

You can pick up the updated Desktop Software v7.0 software here or here and find the new knowledge base articles below:

Free vnPButils Utility Lets You Easily Sideload & Manage Apps on Your PlayBook

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 01:29 PM PST

  vnPButils_2

@vnbb let us know about their latest BlackBerry utility called vnPButils. It sort of takes the role of their BlackBerry smartphone utility, vnBButils, and performs similar functions for your PlayBook. It allows you to easily sideload applications onto your BlackBerry PlayBook from your windows PC which DDPB has been letting you do for awhile. They also allow you to manage the applications installed on your PlayBook from your PC which allows you to list, check status, launch, terminate, or uninstall the app. It also lets you create BAR files from BDM backup files but I am not sure why you would want to do that.

Check out vnBButils here from BBvietnam. This seems to be a work in progress and I have not tried all the features of the app but let us know what you think!

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 Launching Publicly on February 21st (after Presidents Day)

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 11:15 AM PST

PlayBook 2.0

We told you last month that the PlayBook OS 2.0 was launching on February 17th but it looks like regular users will have to wait a tad longer. I have been hearing both the 17th and 21st dates for almost a month now from sources and more of them are pointing towards a February 21st launch date which is also what Lucas @N4BB is hearing. As far as we have been able to piece together the February 17th date was a peg on the calendar that RIM set in October of last year. That date never made sense to me since it is a Friday which would mean that RIM support would be very thin for the biggest PlayBook OS update since the device launch but RIM has never been predictable.

That led to the next possible launch date which was the 20th. As many of you know the 20th is a national holiday in the US, Presidents Day, which means that many of RIM's largest customers and support personnel would once again be unavailable. That seems to be the reason RIM has decided to aim towards February 21st for this huge launch since February 17th would leave them with 3 days of limited support.

I hope you all have a fun Tuesday planned with loads of "Check for Updates" button mashing! This is still not in any way a publicly confirmed launch date from RIM but many of you have been asking us for the latest update.

Giveaway Winners: Easy Lock Pro – Slide up to unlock your phone

There are times where there is a need to keep our phone locked especially when we have it in our pockets or bag to avoid doing things that we dont want to do such as accidental calls. The BlackBerry lock button are pretty handy in such instances but may not always be the best method as these are physical buttons that are still vulnerable to such incidents. Now, the developers from Bulbera came up with this pretty app, Easy Lock Pro, which differs from the competition by getting you to slide UPWARDS instead if the usual left to right.

RIM Sees 6600 New Registered Developers in 11 Days!

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 09:08 AM PST

Alec Saunders Dev Registrations

Before going to bed last night Alec Saunders, RIM's head of Developer Relations, posted a tweet that impressed me. He was simply awestruck that they have registered 6600 new BlackBerry developers in 11 days. My guess is this is all from the hugely successful PlayBook promotion. Devs have been telling me that it is taking longer than usual to register as a dev in App World but RIM has been working overtime to get the registrations in and hopes things will return to normal after February 15th. They have also extended the deadline for the free PlayBooks to March.

As Alec explained in a later tweet these PlayBooks are actually coming from an inventory of 25,000 that were earmarked for developers back in the Fall of last year. I just hope we get some great apps out of this promotion!

Magmic Chronicles 10 Years of BlackBerry Development for 10th Birthday

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 08:56 AM PST

Magmic Timeline

Magmic just made me feel really old. They are celebrating their 10th anniversary/birthday and created a very cool infographic chronicling their history from 2002 to 2012. I remember playing their games back in 2003-04 and its really crazy to see how far they have come. Check out the infographic by clicking the image above or this link.

Kudos to BBCool for spotting this!

Peep It Comes Out of Beta Letting You Read BBM Messages Without Others Knowing

Peepit PeepIt2

Quite a few reader were impressed when Peep It was launched in public beta letting users read BBM messages without sending a R or "read receipt" to the sender letting them know you read it. Peep It lets you read BBM messages without the other party knowing. If you do want them to get confirmation you can simply hit reply and then it will notify them of the view.

Jason from Epic Applications let us know that Peep It is now out of beta and in both App World and Mobihand. You can pick up a free trial or purchase the full version for $2.99.

Free BBM Social Network Smoothie Updated to v2.0

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 06:41 AM PST

smoothie smoothie2 smoothie3

It has been awhile since we last heard of Smoothie from Tafasa. In case you forgot it is a BBM Connected social network built on the BBM SDK that was launched about a year ago. It helps you find other BlackBerry users with similar interests, location, and other settings. They just released Smoothie 2.0 this week which brings multiple chat capabilities allowing you to be in multiple chats at the same time. They have also revamped their "Blender" process that helps you preview your match before you begin to chat and receiving chats that were recommended to you.

You can check out the list of new features in Smoothie 2.0 below or simply pick it up free in App World.

  • MULTIPLE CHATS: You asked, we listened! Multiple chats are now supported in Smoothie! Now you can take part in multiple Coffee Shop and Blender conversations at once, and manage all your chats from the main chat screen.
  • ALL NEW BLENDER: The Blender has been completely revamped to give you the best experience possible! You will find the all new Blender at the top of the main chat screen. With the same customizability as the old Blender, you will now be able to generate matches and preview them before trying to connect to chat. Find someone you feel like talking to? Click on the recommendation, and you will be connected directly to them. The Blender allows others to find and start chats with you as well, so as long as you have the Blender enabled, you’ll be sure to meet someone new!
  • ABOUT ME: Now you can include a little blurb about yourself on the profile page
  • VOTE TO KICK OUT: If you feel like a person is being inappropriate in a chat room, simply go to their profile from the list of participants and click on "vote to kick out". The other person will be warned and your vote will be recorded. If enough people vote, the person will be removed from the chat. We are working hard to make Smoothie a fun place for all!
  • IMPROVED ALERTS: The alert system has been improved so that you can see which chats have new activity straight from the main chat screen, as well as an indicator on the icon whenever there is something new for you to see in Smoothie.
  • WORKS IN THE BACKGROUND: With all the great new additions now available in Smoothie, you are going to want to keep the app running in the background while you use the rest of the great apps on your device. Smoothie does just that when you hit the escape key. You can always quit the app or leave a chat from the menu in the application.
  • EXPANDED HISTORY: Since you’re going to be talking to a lot more people with this new version of Smoothie, we’ve expanded the number of people stored in the history section, helping you find the people you want to chat with later on BBM
  • IMPROVED RELIABILITY: Smoothie 2.0 introduces several changes that will make the app more reliable and efficient, giving you the best experience yet
  • Lots of other bug fixes and improvements

ShopBlackBerry PlayBook Prices

We told you yesterday that RIM had returned the ShopBlackBerry prices for the BlackBerry PlayBook to $299-$499 for the 16GB to 64GB models. Now Qwerty000000 pointed out to us that the prices are back to $199 for the 16GB model, $249 for the 32GB model, and $299 for the 64GB model. This time the sale is set to end on February 20th, 2012.
