BlackBerry Wins a Shorty Industry Award!

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 01:00 AM PDT

On the 26 March 2012, Research In Motion was awarded a Shorty Industry Award for Best Use of Social Media for Customer Service. What makes the Shorty Industry Award special is that they are exclusive to the professional industry community. Unlike the normal Shorty Awards, which are given out based on public voting, the Shorty Industry Awards are reviewed by a prestigious panel of expert and celebrity judges.

This is the second year in a row that RIM has won a Shorty Award for Customer Service, but what makes this year so special is that they expanded the Shorty Awards to honor all of the best short-form content published across social media, beyond just what is being published on Twitter.

This award calls for a celebration and this highlights the global expansion of the social support programs at RIM, and specifically calls attention to the successes of @BlackBerryHelp, @AyudaBlackBerry, @BlackBerryBantu and the global BlackBerry Support Community.

Congratulations to Team BlackBerry and all the employees working hard to help us out everyday!

BlackBerry Still Holds Vast Majority of US Government Smartphone Share

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 11:08 AM PDT

BlackBerry 7 Family Part 2

In case this was not obvious its worth reiterating now that even the Washington Post has seen the light and noticed the US government does not care if you can play Angry Birds on your work smartphone. They confirmed once again that the lion share of smartphones issued by the US government are BlackBerrys with over half a million of them. That number also has not dipped in the past few years. Casey Coleman, CIO of the General Services Administration, also notes that they "appreciate RIM's focus on security." He said that of the 12,000 devices issued by the GSA the "vast majority" are BlackBerrys.

RIM has always had a strangle hold on the secure smartphone market for ages due to their laser focus on security and no nonsense work device options. Other platforms are finally getting to the point where they can try to compete and they will obviously make some headway but RIM is still the top dog in Washington. The thing is that the most common complaint government users have about BlackBerry, subpar web browsing, has been fixed in the latest BlackBerry 7 devices. Hopefully they will get upgrades soon.

The big question is how BlackBerry 10 will change the game… Thanks Bill for sending this in!

Free SideSwipe App is a Lightweight News Reader for Your Smartphone

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 06:46 AM PDT

Sideswipe Sideswipe2

A few readers sent us tips about SideSwipe during its beta and now it has officially launched. The new app is a news aggregator that tries to tame the firehose of news and funnel it onto your phone. You subscribe to certain channels and it will automatically curate the news for you. The app does not have the ability to add your own RSS feeds which is a shame but it makes up for it in speed. It reminds me quite a bit of the Social Feeds app built in OS 6.0+ devices but it is much much faster and a tiny install at only ~100K.

If you have been looking for a lightweight news reader and you don't care about things like Google Reader integration or RSS subscriptions then check out SideSwipe free in App World. I really have to commend the developers on making SideSwipe so efficient…
