OS 2.1 Hinted at Again in BlackBerry PlayBook User Manual Update

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 08:07 PM PDT

Well good evening everyone.  Of late talk of OS 2.0.1 and 2.1 has hit a fever pitch and it seems RIM is already at the point where they are taking care of the little things, like updating the Blackberry Playbook User Manual on line.  As you can see in the picture above, the manual now references OS 2.1 and some corresponding Facebook updates that will come with it.  Whether its 2.1 or 2.0.1, it seems we will be getting a decent update sometime soon!

The above caption is taken from page 58 of the user manual which can be found here

*BETA* – BBM v6.2.0.40 Hits BlackBerry Beta Zone

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 03:18 PM PDT

RIM dropped a crumb for those adventurous early-adopter types (like me!) in the form of a new BBM update. 6.2.0.40 looks like mostly bug fixes to me, so far, so drop us a line if you find something snazzy and new! As usual, keys are required, so watch your email.

If you’re not familiar with Beta Zone, check it out here. Join up, install some bleeding-edge BB apps, and soon your BB will be beta than ever! ;)

US Government Purchase of BlackBerry Devices on the Rise

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Most of the news about RIM this past year has been about consumers and government agencies leaving BlackBerry for other devices.  In an interview Scot Totzke vice president of BlackBerry security said that RIM government market share is probably increasing. Totzke had this to say:

Compared to the enterprise over the last year and a half or so, the federal business on whole is up," said Totzke, who also runs RIM's U.S. government sales business. "The employee base is shrinking, so if we're looking at a market with fewer employees and our install base is stable to slightly up, that would seem to indicate that we have an increasing market share."

The president of the U.S when he took office fought to keep his BlackBerry, and who can blame him, it is a device that gets things done. There is no word what device he is using these days, hopefully a new 9900 since the one he had when he took office is probably pretty sluggish by now.

RIM is in the process of implementing a new strategy, by launching BB10 devices, and Mobile Fusion that is promising it just all depends on execution. The enterprise market is one market segment RIM cannot afford to lose, and that seems to line up with RIM announcement to change the strategy to focus more on that segment during the last earning call.

Another reason for the rise in sales has to do with the fact that not all agencies upgrade their devices each time a new BlackBerry comes out, some may still be using OS 5 devices if not older. Totzke said that: "About 40 percent of RIM's government customers upgraded to new devices in the past 12 months, he said" which is a pretty good.

The tipster also mentioned that the launch is scheduled for  May which would line up nicely with RIM hosting BlackBerry world 2012 at the beginning of may it would make sense for them to announce the device at their own event.

So how many of you will actually purchase a BlackBerry PlayBook 4G/3G?

Alec Saunders Clarifies Side Loading Comment Made on Twitter

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 06:00 AM PDT

IMG_00000263_thumbThe recent tweet by Alec Saunder regarding future OS builds would block the ability to side load applications did not sit well with some of the BlackBerry PlayBook users. Yesterday Alec Saunders wrote a follow up post on the BlackBerry Dev Blog regarding the Twit that caused the debate. The post is a little vague on how developers will be able to load and test app with their testing communities but it did say that this feature was not meant for users to take 3rd party apps and load them on their PlayBook.

Here is what he posted on the BlackBerry Dev Blog:

There's been a lot of coverage this morning about tweets I posted regarding the side-loading of apps onto the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet. Unfortunately, 140 characters doesn't allow for nuance. I'd like to take this opportunity to set the record straight for our developer community.

We're not getting rid of side-loading on the BlackBerry PlayBook OS or in BlackBerry 10.
Side-loading on our platform is changing in nature. Side-loading is a developer feature. It exists so that developers can load their apps onto their own devices to test. It's there so developers can send a beta release to their testing community for review. It is definitely not there for some people to side load a pirated app.

What are we doing?
Starting with our next release of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS, we're introducing a feature that will encrypt apps so they can only be run by the user who purchased the app.

What's next?
We're working with you, our developer community, to ensure you can still quickly and easily test your apps on real hardware. That's one of the reasons we're kicking off BlackBerry 10 Jam by giving each developer attendee a prototype device to start building on. I'll be on-hand at the show to answer your questions – look forward to seeing you there.

Let's Jam.

@asaunders

Personally I do agree with most of the points he made on the fact that users can take 3rd party apps and easily load them even if the app is not paid for. A take away from this is the following point:

What are we doing?
Starting with our next release of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS, we're introducing a feature that will encrypt apps so they can only be run by the user who purchased the app.

Not really sure how this will play out but it will be interesting to see the BlackBerry community finds a way around it.
