Free Do Not Disturb App Silences Emails and Calls

Posted: 31 May 2012 01:57 AM PDT

Do Not Disturb Do Not Disturb2

While most of us usually just set our phones to vibrate when we need some quiet there are alternatives. The latest to hit the scene is a free Do Not Disturb app by SRID games. You simply set a time for your phone to go silent and it will silence your email and phone notifications during that time. It also allows you to setup a white or blacklist of calls that can or cannot go through. While there are some more sophisticated apps this one definitely gets the job done. It also works great if you want to block out dinner time as family time every day.

BlackBerry Curve 9310 & 9320 Make Their Way Through the FCC

Posted: 30 May 2012 01:12 PM PDT

Curve 9310 9320 FCC

The BlackBerry Curve 9320 and Curve 9220 have been making their rounds in emerging markets and now RIM is bringing the 9320 and 9310 to North America. Engadget spotted the BlackBerry Curve 9310 & 9320 (CDMA & GSM) making their way through the FCC with the classic BlackBerry Curve low end features including 512MB of RAM and a 3.2 MP camera. This is definitely targeted at the low end entry level market and I definitely think it could also work in the prepaid market with its dedicated BBM button.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager v7.0 Bundle 60 Released for PCs

Posted: 30 May 2012 11:02 AM PDT

BlackBerry Desktop Software Mac and PC

I was waiting a bit to see how this one panned out before mentioning the release of Desktop Manager v7.0 bundle 60. The last public release of 7.0 Bundle 44 was an unmitigated disaster with "preparing sync preview" issues abound when it came to synching PIM data. RIM fixed that with releases in the Beta Zone and even released a version of Desktop Manager 7.1 beta in the beta zone.

Still its nice to see the official Desktop Manager release fixed at v7.0. You can download it now directly from RIM or check out the change log PDF here. Sadly this version still does not bring PlayBook PIM desktop sync.

Updated: (Just a Theme) Possible Early Demo Video of BlackBerry 10 UI Surfaces

Posted: 30 May 2012 08:36 AM PDT

Update: It looks like this is just a very good theme mimicking BlackBerry 10. If someone spots it in App World let us know! (Kudos to Bla1ze for pointing it out!)

BlackBerry 10 Video

I am not sure what to make of this video demo but it looks legit. A couple readers sent this in (one crediting OSBB but not sure where) and it looks very similar to the BlackBerry tutorial videos and demos RIM has used in the past. The video is titled BB QNX 2.0 Preview 1 which has me wondering how old it is but the date is titled as Tuesday May 29th. It also does not have some of the main UI elements RIM showed off at BlackBerry World such as the messages list. Either way it is fun to watch! Feel free to speculate in the comments.

Having Issues Connecting Your PlayBook To Your PC? Here Is a Common Fix

Posted: 30 May 2012 07:59 AM PDT

PlayBook Cannot Connect

Have you had trouble connecting your PlayBook to your PC over USB with Desktop Manager giving you error messages like "BlackBerry Desktop Software cannot communicate with the connected device." When I first ran into this issue with the launch of PlayBook I thought it was caused by a custom image of Windows XP that had a critical service turned off. I have since found that quite a few users have had this issue sporadically so I finally got down to addressing it especially since it even made its way to CrackBerry's front page.

What happens is that the USB connection to the BlackBerry PlayBook emulates a network adapter. It makes use of the Microsoft File Sharing and NetBIOS service to connect to the PlayBook. For most people this is setup by default but for some reason that I cannot nail down this is not happening for some users. Well luckily there is a fix and it is an easy one though it was bit crude when I first wrote it up. GH pointed out to me that RIM has their own knowledge base article about this issue that details the main fix in a much easier to follow format:

The following settings need to be enabled in the Research in Motion Network Driver connection located under Network Connections:

  1. Client for Microsoft Networks
  2. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
  3. Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

To enable this setting in Microsoft® Windows® XP, please complete the following steps.

  1. Go to Control Panel in Windows
  2. Select Network Connections
  3. In the LAN or High-Speed Internet window, select and right mouse click on the Local Area Connection that is detected as Research In Motion Network Device
  4. Select Properties after doing a right mouse click
  5. Ensure Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks,Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is checked

To enable this setting in Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows Vista®, please complete the following steps.

  1. Go to Control Panel in Windows
  2. Select Network and Internet (in Category View, if in Small or Large icons view, go to the next step)
  3. Select Network and Sharing Center
  4. Under View your active networks, choose the alternative Local Area Connection x (Access type: No Internet access) that is detected as Research In Motion Network Device
  5. In the next window for Local Area Connection x Status, select Properties
  6. Ensure Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks,Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) is checked

NOTE: I have personally found that you also need to enable the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service for Windows to make everything work. This is disabled on some systems that are tuned for performance. To turn it on open the Services manager by right clicking on My Computer -> Select Manage from the drop down menu -> go to Services and Applications on the left hand side and select the sub option of Services. You will then have to find the NetBIOS service option and click the run button and set its options to startup automatically at boot.

Possible implications of RIM’s $10K guarantee

Posted: 30 May 2012 06:00 AM PDT

At BlackBerry 10 Jam in Orlando Alec Saunders announced that RIM would be offering a $10,000 guarantee for BlackBerry 10 apps that meet a quality criteria. Most of the details of this program have not yet been announced, but we do know that in order to qualify for the guarantee an app must reach at least $1,000 dollars worth of sales. This offer will have a direct impact on the apps that are initially available on BlackBerry 10.

Uniform design

Details are not yet out on what the quality criteria will be, but most likely it will involve creating an app following RIM’s design criteria for BB10. This will most likely mean writing the UI for apps in either bbUI.js or Cascades. The end result for users will be a lot of apps with a consistent interface.

Higher percentage of paid apps

The guarantee does not apply to free apps, so developers who are unsure of a business model will be more likely to choose going with a paid app rather than a free app in order to take advantage of this offer. There is no word yet if this offer would apply to free apps that make use of in-app purchases. I would hope that these apps are included, because otherwise it is an incentive to go with the model of separate free/premium apps, which is not as user friendly (or as good for the developer in the long term).

No change on the top end

For most top tier apps $10,000 worth of sales will be easily reached anyhow so there will be no real effect on these apps from the guarantee. The effect of this offer is far more likely to have a greater impact on encouraging more app creation on the mid to low end apps that are bringing in ~$1,000 in revenue per year.

More apps available at launch

The best way to take advantage of this program is to submit apps early, and to be a part of it from the beginning. As a result, this offer will help drive more apps to be available for BlackBerry10 on day one.

More advertising of apps

If spending $300 on advertising brings in an additional $100 worth of sales, then the advertising is a waste of money. However with this offer, it is important enough to get the first $1,000 worth of sales that in some cases spending $3,000 in advertising in order to guarantee that you hit the threshold will be well worth it.

Little incentive to encourage incrementally better sales

With this program, there is a lot of incentive to reach $1,000 in sales. For apps that sell more then $10,000 there is the normal monetary incentive to sell more. For apps stuck in the middle there is little incentive to drive sales. For an app that has already crossed the $1,000 threshold and seem unlikely to surpass ten grand there is no incentive at all. This may result in a good number of apps that don’t receive much in the way of updates or support during their first year.

Let us know what you think!
