iMazing Adds Support for Non-Touch Devices With v1.5.0.6

Posted: 10 May 2012 01:55 AM PDT

iMazing iMazing2

The popular iMazing app just got a nice update that adds trackpad support for non touchscreen BlackBerrys. That means those of you with Bolds, Curves, & Torches can get in on the fun. The app lets you easily swipe away your incoming messages as read or deleted and then view them if necessary.

Check out the update in App World or the full change log below:

  • The new release of iMazing is finally supporting none touch screen BlackBerry Devices! This makes iMazingavailable to all 88xx, Bold, Curve and Pearl owners running OS5 (or higher) as well.

Instead of swiping left or right on the touch screen you can use the trackpad movement to show the left or the right button. Also ‘double tab’ the trackpad is possible with the new iMazing version. This will give you the full control over your eMails (& SMS) with just your thumb!

In the message preview screen you can make use of the following keyboard shortcuts:

    • [DEL]/[BACKSPACE]: Delete
    • [SPACE]: Mark As Read
    • [R]: Reply
    • [A]: Reply To All
    • [F]: Forward Message
    • [S]: Save Message

(Please note: touch screen owners need to enable the trackpad support in the options to be able to use of the keyboard shortcuts in the message preview screen)

Touch screen device owners (who have also a keyboard/trackpad) can enable the additional trackpad support via the Options (OFF by default).

  • The new version of iMazing will automatically concatenating multiple SMS messages coming from the same sender.

When you receive SMS that are longer then 160 characters, iMazing will automatically join these multiple messages to a single ‘iMazing SMS message’. When an additional SMS will be received in less then 45sec after previously another SMS have been received from the same sender, then iMazing assumes that these SMS messages should be joined into a single message.

When you are already previewing the initial SMS the content will be instantly appended in the moment the next SMS is arriving.

  • Various improvements to solve issues when device will be unlocked (and encryption is enabled)

BlackBerry 10 BBM App Wireframes Shown Off at BlackBerry 10 Jam (Cascades)

 BBM BlackBerry Jam Cascades3

Before we headed down to BlackBerry 10 Jam and BlackBerry World 2012 we told you RIM had a few very cool sounding sessions going on. One of those was RIM detailing how they are building BBM for BlackBerry 10 using Cascades. Sadly I did not get to be at that presentation due to other commitments but we did want to share with you some info from it. Shiladitya Sircar, Director of R&D BBM at RIM, was on stage explaining how they are building BBM on BlackBerry 10. A large majority of the talk was focused on the technical details and implementation decisions which would bore anyone unless they are a developer.

Since many of you have since asked me about the session I wanted to show you what was presented. Sircar shared a few wireframes (Think rough outlines) of how BBM is designed to work on BlackBerry 10. Sircar made a focus on mentioning that RIM is bringing all of the BBM feature parity we love in the current BBM to BlackBerry 10. That includes groups and other features. He also said that they are getting regular user interface and user experience design changes so this is in no way final. Check out a basic view of how it will look below:

BBM BlackBerry Jam Cascades

As you can see above you have the chats, contacts, and groups of the current BBM. The main change is a new filtering dropdown to show only certain contacts or chats along with a new grid system you see below.

The presenter also showed how Friend Updates view allows you to quickly see what your contacts are up to now:

RIM also shared the key design principles behind their design including:

There is also the slide out extra actions menu powered by Cascades:

The rest is a bunch more technical decisions and implementation choices by RIM on how they used Cascades and their migration from Java to C++.

Will Bridge 2.1 Bring AppWorld Accessibility?

Posted: 09 May 2012 08:54 AM PDT

"BlackBerry Bridge" Photo by Jeff Grenier (@jeffyos) Taken with a BlackBerry PlayBook

Sitting here at work with no wifi and an Angry Birds Space update taunting me from my PlayBook’s notification bar got me to thinking. With Bridge 2.1 bringing the ability to bridge via wifi, will AppWorld then be accessible via Bridge? I sure hope so. That would mean that, no matter where you go,  as long as you have data coverage, you can download and update apps on your PlayBook without having to connect to a local wifi connection. Without paying for an extra data plan. Without paying for a tethering plan (though we’ll see how carriers react to this when it comes out). Without paying for a hotspot plan. Pretty freakin’ cool.

TAMPA, FLORIDA–(Marketwire – May 9, 2012) – DISA Mission Partner Conference — Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced DoD-wide approval for the use of BlackBerry(R) 7 smartphones. Working with U.S. Army and Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) sponsors and partners, BlackBerry 7 smartphones have undergone successful testing through Army labs leading to a subsequent listing on DISA’s Unified Communications Approved Product List (UCAPL).
The approval allows all DoD customers to use the following BlackBerry 7 smartphones on DoD networks:

-- BlackBerry(R) Bold(TM) 9900 and 9930 (touch screen with keyboard) -- BlackBerry(R) Torch(TM) 9810 (touch screen with slide out keyboard) -- BlackBerry(R) Torch(TM) 9850 and 9860 (full screen touch screen) -- BlackBerry(R) Curve(TM) 9360 (keyboard)

Bowers & Wilkins Announce P3 Headphones

Posted: 09 May 2012 08:00 AM PDT

We have previously covered the Bowers & Wilkins line of headphones, loving the in-ear C5 for its big sound and loving the high end P5 for its luxurious feel and range of sound. Bowers & Wilkins just announced a new model of headphone to take fill out the family–the over the ear P3 headphones will be available in June for $199.99.  From the information available it appears as if the P3s will provide a similar quality of sounds to the P5s but without the high end materials.  The press images are below. We hope to review them closer to the launch date. While Ronen loves his Shures you definitely should give these a chance if you are looking for quality sound.

RIM Awarded Patent for Angular Trapezoidal Keyboard

Posted: 09 May 2012 06:55 AM PDT

Angular Keyboard

RIM seems to never tire from trying out different takes on physical keyboards for smartphones. Their latest patent spotted by Engadget was filed in 2009 for an "Angular keyboard for a handheld mobile communication device." Once you get a look at the picture you understand how it would work. Supposedly this design would help people with bigger fingers to type faster compared to the teardrop happy face design RIM currently uses and keeps on tweaking. Check out the abstract below:

Wireless handheld mobile communication device including a housing with a display above a keyboard exposed for user actuation. A length of the device is greater than the width. Each key of a right-hand keyfield has a longitudinal axis oriented at a left-to-right inclined angle while each key of a left-hand keyfield has a longitudinal axis oriented at a right-to-left inclined angle from the vertical centerline. A left boundary of the keyboard is located adjacent the left lateral side edge of the device and the right boundary of the keyboard is located adjacent the right lateral side edge of the device so that the keyboard spans a substantial entirety of the width of the device. When the device is cradled in a right hand of the user, the longitudinal axis of each key of said plurality of keys located on the right is oriented to be parallel with a widthwise axis of the user’s right thumb. When said device is cradled in a left hand of the user, the longitudinal axis of the keys located on the left-hand side of said vertical centerline is oriented to be substantially with a length wise axis of the user’s left thumb. At least one key in the right-hand keyfield and one key in the left-hand keyfield is isosceles trapezoidal shaped.

Check out the patent at the USPTO for yourself to see what RIM may be working on. Below is another pic:

BBJam_Banner

For those of you who were there with me at BlackBerry 10 Jam or BlackBerry World 2012 you can now catch up on all the sessions you missed. RIM has posted up the on demand sessions for both conferences which is a boon for many who missed some of the great sessions that were running concurrently or were booked out. I am not sure if RIM will open up these sessions to all like they have done with previous developer conferences but hopefully they will. Let us know if you have any luck with that.

SMS, Wi-Fi, & More Coming Soon With Bridge Update?

Posted: 09 May 2012 05:35 AM PDT

PlayBook-bridge

Bla1ze over at CrackBerry shared some of what he has been hearing about upcoming BlackBerry Bridge updates. The first was that BlackBerry Bridge v2.1 will be adding Text Message (SMS) capabilities over Bridge. I can confirm that this is definitely coming which is exciting for many who use alternatives. Also RIM is working on Bridge over Wi-Fi expanding beyond just Bluetooth. This should hopefully open up more bandwidth and lower latency for RIM to speed up the bridge experience.

There are quite a few other updates coming for bridge since RIM is not forgetting about it anytime soon. There is a big value proposition for BlackBerry owners with Bridge on the PlayBook and RIM is going to continue improving it.
