PlayBook OS 2.1 Launching By Early Summer? Posted: 01 May 2012 09:14 PM PDT The word coming from BlackBerry World is that PlayBook OS 2.1 will arrive at the beginning of summer. Brad from BerryReporter learning during a BB10 session that a Dev. beta build should be out towards the end of the month for devs to get their applications ready. The public release is schedule for early summer. This new build should bring a few new features:
One of the really awesome features of BlackBerry Bridge is the addition of Bridge texting to this update. BlackBerry Bridge was made fun of by some in the media but the more I use it the more I like the options using the PlayBook to BBM, or controlling your PlayBook with your BlackBerry, can't do that with most of the other gadgets out there. RIM and QNX Announce Initiative To Encourage App Development In China’s Universities Posted: 01 May 2012 02:43 PM PDT
May 1, 2012 RIM and QNX Initiative Encourages Young Talent in China to Develop Apps on the BlackBerry Platform BEIJING, CHINA and ORLANDO, FLORIDA–(Marketwire – May 1, 2012) – BlackBerry World 2012 – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) and its subsidiary, QNX Software Systems, today announced a new initiative to encourage university students in China to develop more apps and services on the BlackBerry(R) platform. RIM and QNX are working with a number of universities in China to launch an app development competition at the end of May, providing further incentive for student software developers in the country to turn their creative ideas into apps and services that can be commercialized on BlackBerry(R) smartphones and BlackBerry(R) PlayBook(TM) tablets. The initiative aims to nurture the spirit of innovation among young Chinese developers and provide a means for students to gain technology know-how and expertise in taking an idea from concept to market. The competition will focus on two categories: "Mobility Lifestyle Use" and "Automotive Experience". RIM and QNX will provide BlackBerry devices, software development tools, technical support and other resources. RIM has also been working with universities in China to provide training courses for developing apps on the BlackBerry platform. "We are pleased to expand our work with universities in China to provide students with more opportunities to develop their skills and knowledge in the exciting and rapidly growing fields of mobile computing and automotive infotainment," said Urpo Karjalainen, Regional Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Research In Motion. The winning apps will be made available on BlackBerry App World(TM) and winners of the competition will have the opportunity to participate in internship programmes at leading Chinese and multinational companies. PixelMags Bringing Tons of Magazines to BlackBerry 10 Using Cascades Posted: 01 May 2012 02:27 PM PDT One of the slickest apps shown off during BlackBerry 10 was PixelMags and their magazine subscription business. They run some great services and apps for top shelf magazines and they are launching with BlackBerry 10. It offers a subscription service but they are throwing in a new element with BlackBerry 10 that is new for their platform. They will allow you to read 10 minutes of magazines a month forever for free. Check out the slick app below: If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Gameloft Announces 11 New Games For BB10 Posted: 01 May 2012 01:59 PM PDT
Getting major developers on the BB10 bandwagon is paramount to RIM's success. It bodes well that Gameloft took the stage at the BlackBerry 10 Jam and announced their support of the BB10 platform with 11 new titles, including Shark Dash, N.O.V.A. 3 HD, IceAge Village, and Oregon Trail. Yes, I said Oregon Trail. You too will be able to die from dysentery on BB10. I can hardly wait.

Visualization of BlackBerry 10 API & Core Package Framework Posted: 01 May 2012 12:58 PM PDT One of the main things I have been waiting to see from RIM in terms of BlackBerry 10 development is the API access they will be giving developers. RIM gave us a bit more insight into that and you can dig into what is currently available on RIM's developers sites. They did post up two slides that show the hierarchy of the APIs and core frameworks which gives us some insight into how it will work. Definitely worth checking out if that is something that interests you. Notice everything from the invocation, share, and messages API's to launcher, DRM, drivers, and memory management. While on stage Alec Saunders confirmed that BlackBerry 10 Jam is going on a World Tour with 1 day sessions in many cities in different countries. They will be introducing the tools and hopefully also be seeding more PlayBooks and BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha devices. Check out the full listing of cities in the slide above! Roadmap for Mobile Fusion on iOS & Android and Moving to the Cloud Posted: 01 May 2012 12:33 PM PDT This is the first time I have seen RIM's CIO, Robin Bienfait, ever talk at a BlackBerry event. She got on stage during the main keynote today and laid out the roadmap for some future development for Mobile Fusion along with Alan Panezic. Right now it offers what most other MDM solutions do for iOS and Android but users such as Martha Stuart Living which have already implemented it want more. RIM laid out the plan that:
They did not go into much further detail but check out the slides for some facts. Robin also mentioned what she called Direct Enterprise Connection which seems to be allowing cloud and hosted BES to access back into the enterprise through apps using MDS and such. Devs: Submit A BB10 App, Trade Your Alpha Device In For A Limited-Edition BB10 Device At Release Posted: 01 May 2012 12:31 PM PDT This year’s BlackBerry World is very much geared toward selling developers on the BB10 platform. RIM is really throwing themselves at the feet of the developer community. Let’s face it, with the developers, BB10 goes nowhere, and RIM goes bye-bye. RIM. Needs. Developers. They absolutely have to secure buy-in on BB10, and they know it. Netflix, Skype, Slingbox, and other apps may not have been deemed important by RIM, but their consumers want them, and RIM is recognizing that. “The years of RIM ignoring its consumers are gone”, said a RIM staffer.
RIM is making “a concerted effort” to court developers and bring them on board. RIM has already offered free Alpha devices to entice developers to BB10, but Alec Saunders just sweetened the pot significantly. Any developer who submits an approved BB10 app will be asked to send in their Alpha device once BB10 devices are released publicly. In return, they will receive a limited-edition final-release BB10 device! How’s that for incentive? *NOTE TO SELF: Learn how to code for BB10!

BBUI.js HTML5 User Interface Framework Updated for BlackBerry 10 Posted: 01 May 2012 12:22 PM PDT RIM has updated the popular BBUI.js framework that developers use to mimic the user interface elements on BlackBerry OS 5-7 and the PlayBook. The new update adds support for BlackBerry 10 UI elements that act almost exactly like the Cascades UI elements so HTML5 and Native Cascades app share the same UI elements. This is now one library that changes its looks and rendering based on the device and screen size. So BlackBerry 5-7 devices have those elements and PlayBook uses the bigger screen along with having the BlackBerry 10 UI look. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Flix Brings Netflix to the PlayBook Posted: 01 May 2012 11:46 AM PDT One of the most requested apps for the PlayBook has been Netflix. Well for now Flix is here to help. Flix uses your PC and PlayBook to help stream Netflix on your PlayBook. Due to the workings of Flix, there are some current limitations like PC and PlayBook must be on a shared WiFi connection. Continue to see the full requirements, and how to get your own copy.
Now remember, this app has no affiliation with Netflix, but is a good alternative when in a applicable area. You can get your copy in AppWorld for $4.99. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Marmalade Shows PlayBook Games Running on BlackBerry 10 With No Changes Posted: 01 May 2012 11:45 AM PDT One of the things RIM has made in terms of promises is the fact that apps and games built for the PlayBook will run on BlackBerry 10. While some minimal changes may sometimes be required but over and over we are hearing from a few developers that many don't even require any changes. Marmalade was showing off their Backbreaker 2 game running on both devices. Pretty slick to see that cross platform compatibility. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Magmic Develops Texas Hold‘em PlayBook App in 6 Weeks Posted: 01 May 2012 11:33 AM PDT Longtime veteran BlackBerry developers Magmic got on stage to show off their upcoming Texas Hold'em King for BlackBerry 10 and PlayBook. They have managed to build an app that they demoed live that allows for cross platform poker playing between BlackBerry smartphones, PlayBook, and even the BlackBerry 10 Alpha device. This was built in 6 weeks using the RIM's port of the Cocos2D library. It has things like in app chat and the demo had it playing against all three platforms. They said the app should be out in public beta in the next few weeks after it goes through some device testing. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Accuweather, Wikitude, & More Shown on BlackBerry 10 Using Cascades Posted: 01 May 2012 11:25 AM PDT RIM is pulling up developers who have had access to BlackBerry 10 Cascades for a bit and they are showing off some of their creations. Xtreme Labs who has been building cross platform and BlackBerry apps for years talking about building with cascades and their work on a new BlackBerry 10 Accuweather app. It looks slick and they show how simple the Cascades elements are to create slick apps. The also had another company (macademics?) showing off an app they are opensourcing that demos for. It shows a sports team comparison based on social interaction. The right hand side is a graph that shows what team is getting more buzz which is rendered in OpenGL. On the left is cascades elements. Also of interest is Wikitude showing off their Wikitude app on the developer alpha device. They even have aliens!!! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Shows Off Some Cascades UI Elements & BlackBerry 10 Homescreen Posted: 01 May 2012 11:14 AM PDT RIM has been showing off some of the elements of Cascades on stage as the UI building blocks of PlayBook and BlackBerry 10 Apps. They call it out of the box elegance. They even flashed back to the homescreen a few times which is built on tiles when you switch between apps with a slick shrinking and growing animation. This is the same animation RIM showed when you peek from one app to the other. It also shows pulling left to see what is going on in terms of notifications. Certified Quality Apps Coming to App World With $10,000 Revenue Guarantee Posted: 01 May 2012 10:43 AM PDT Alec went on stage to show that RIM wants quality apps in App World compared to other ecosystems that are flooded with junk apps. RIM is rolling out a new certification program for a nominal fee that will be run by a totally independent third party that certifies the quality of an app. Apps that have this certification who have earned at least $1,000 on their own and then receive certification will then receive a guarantee from RIM. That guarantee says that they will earn at least $10,000 or RIM will cut them a check themselves. RIM has not released all the details but expect more soon! Loads of BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha Pictures Posted: 01 May 2012 09:41 AM PDT We just got some hands on time with the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha that RIM will be giving to developers tomorrow. This new device is really just for developers to test out their apps on the BlackBerry 10 framework with things like Cascades. Even though it has slim bezels the gestures are very responsive and easy to work with. The phone itself uses a microsim slot and has cellular, Wi-Fi, NFC, and a few other connections available. The only apps that show up are the browser, camera, and setup page so I doubt anybody will be using this for anything other than development. It really deoas Check out the pics and let us know if you want to see more! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

What is BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha? Posted: 01 May 2012 09:33 AM PDT We got to put our hands on the Alpha dev device in the Press Lounge after the Keynote address. The Alpha is a mini PlayBook. Same OMAP 4430 TI processor, same form factor, miniaturized, of course, same matte finish on the exterior. The OS functions like the PlayBook, and I have to say, I really like it on this form factor. The device only has the browser and camera apps installed, and settings are locked down tight. It exists as a bare-bones framework for developers to drape their apps on without having to resort to iffy software simulators.
From Inside Blackberry: “We are thrilled to provide every developer who attends BlackBerry® 10 Jam a BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device. This is a prototype device created for the purpose of testing BlackBerry 10 applications during development. Did I mention it's a prototype? The BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha is not a BlackBerry 10 smartphone for end users nor does it run the final BlackBerry 10 software – it's been created just for our developer partners to help them prepare for the launch of BlackBerry 10. The BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha has a 4.2″ screen with a resolution of 1280×768. It has Micro USB for debugging and charging. It has a Micro HDMI port for displaying video on a television or monitor with a HDMI port. It has Bluetooth and WiFi radios and is cellular ready (micro SIM). It's important to get this prototype into the hands of our partners now so that you can help us deliver the type of high-quality content that will make BlackBerry 10 so special. With the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha, you can test your apps on real hardware to work out interface, ergonomic and usability issues. This device is also a show of our commitment to helping developers build engaging apps for BlackBerry 10. Developers have told us they wanted hardware to test on before the platform launches and we are delivering.” (via Inside BlackBerry) It was tough to get nice clear shots with all of us crowding in around it, but here’s a few close-ups: http://blogs.blackberry.com/2012/05/blackberry-10-dev-alpha/ If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
