PlayEPub eBook Reader for the BlackBerry PlayBook (ePub Formats) Posted: 30 Dec 2011 10:53 AM PST We have mentioned a few ePub ebook readers for the PlayBook since it launched but PlayEPub is one of the top contenders. It offers up a pretty solid feature set including what they call "real book-like pagination" if that is important to you. It can read any non-DRM protected ePub book and should be able to handle most. You can find PlayEPub in App World for $1.99 below. It is under constant development and you can see the latest updates below: v.1.6.170
v.1.6.160
v.1.6.152

BlackBerry Torch 9810 OS 7.1.0.163 in Carrier Testing Posted: 30 Dec 2011 10:01 AM PST We saw an early leak of OS 7.1.0.74 for the BlackBerry Torch 9810 earlier this month but not much has been seen since. Now Tashanna pointed out to us the NerdBerry got a tip showing that the BlackBerry Torch 9810 OS 7.1.0.163 is currently in carrier testing. It was supposedly certified by RIM to go out to carriers on December 22nd so we may be seeing it sooner rather than later. I am hoping these OS 7.1 official rollouts start hitting right after the new year… If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Your #BeBold New Years Resolution Tweet May Show Up in Times Square Posted: 30 Dec 2011 09:54 AM PST
We told you before that RIM was sponsoring the Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest. RIM has revealed a little bit more about the promotion with a cool tie in. They are asking Team BlackBerry (That means you!) to send in your New Years resolutions through Twitter using the #BeBold hashtag or in the comments on their announcement. Here are the instructions RIM provided:

Freshen Up Your Workout Routine With Pocket Trainer Posted: 30 Dec 2011 09:07 AM PST A friend asked me last week for some recommended exercise apps and after digging through my recommendations he was happily impressed with Pocket Trainer. The Pocket Trainer app has been around for awhile now and has received modest updates since. It gives you access to videos that let you choose from a range of exercises to spice up your workout. This lets you change things up from the regular grind. All in all Pocket Trainer is a solid service/app which you can pick up in App World for $12.99 If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

This year has been a true rollercoaster for BlackBerry users and addicts. RIM first tried placating users upgrade demands with slightly improved variants of existing devices with more memory. They then released the BlackBerry PlayBook which showed tons of promise but struggled to improve the OS. Then they finally treated us to a whole lineup of BlackBerry 7 devices with processors that doubled the speed of the previous crop. Now reflecting on the 2011 that past I cannot help but think of a conversation I had with Kevin @CrackBerry over lunch in NYC back in late 2010. We were discussing 2011 and what RIM had in store for users and both of us agreed that 2011 was a huge transition period for RIM. Kevin was right on the money when he stated that 2012 would really be the year RIM starts to come back. Now at the end of 2011 it seems like this transition period will be stretching into 2012 but will hopefully start showing its promise in February. I am excited to see what RIM has in store for us and I truly hope they hit the ground kicking ass and taking names with a successful PlayBook 2.0 launch. There are so many different rumors I am hearing from inside RIM and the excitement seems to be brewing. Hopefully RIM shows us what a BlackBerry BB10 "Superphone" looks like soon! I wanted to thank all of you for making 2011 an amazing year with record breaking readership on BerryReview. We got a chance to connect with you through the 2850 articles we wrote this year and the tens of thousands of comments. We hope you enjoyed the ride with us. Here is to an amazing 2012! The “People’s Car” People at Volkswagen Limit BlackBerry Push To Working Hours (For Some). Posted: 30 Dec 2011 07:05 AM PST The “always on, always available” functionality of the BlackBerry system has long been a double-edged sword in the workplace. On the one hand, it can make for a very successful and productive workforce. On the other, it can make it very difficult for employees to get away, to “unplug” from work. That flashing red light often interrupts much-needed downtime, making it impossible for employees to recharge their batteries and return to work fresh and ready to go. Following a trend among European companies to improve work-life balance, Volkswagen will limit BlackBerry Push email to some 1100+ workers in Germany. While management will continue to receive emails as usual, the company has agreed to union demands, limiting emails for certain unionized employees to a period starting 30 minutes before their shift and ending 30 minutes after. In addition to workforce wellness and productivity concerns, the legality of after-hours work performed via BlackBerry has also, at times, become a point of contention between companies and workers as well. After all, work is work, no matter when or where it is performed. As someone who does not rate a company BlackBerry (mine is personally-owned), I have never experienced “BlackBerry Burnout”, but I have spoken to many co-workers and friends about it. Some describe it as a lifeline, while others consider it a ball-and-chain. Businesses must continue to walk the fine line between their own productivity and the personal lives of their workforce. I think that, as with most things, moderation is the key, and, with this action, the makers of the “People’s Car” have taken a firm step towards becoming more of a “People’s” company.

Want to Downgrade Your Playbook OS? Here’s How! Posted: 30 Dec 2011 05:45 AM PST Scrid2000 over at OSBB has posted a great tutorial on how to downgrade your playbook OS using a local copy. Anyone who has been following the whole DingleBerry/rooting scene that has come to up in the past few weeks will know that the last 2 patches by RIM has blocked the root. These steps let you trick Desktop Manager into using a local PlayBook operating system to downgrade. Chris Wade, the creator of DingleBerry had given us instructions on how to downgrade using an Apache server, and some of the guys over at CrackBerry had also been working on a method. But this method is for everyday rooters, who don’t have access to an Apache server. Here is the link to the wonderful tutorial How to downgrade your Playbook OS using a local copy. And please remember that this is an advanced process that requires some timely actions, and any fault on your behalf could ruin your device(s).
