Free & Premium Plunk Marble Labyrinth Game for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 01:10 PM PST

Plunk2 Plunk

I have been looking for a fun labyrinth style game for the BlackBerry PlayBook since I am a sucker for these types of games. JD let me know that Ontario Microbrewed Games has released a fun variant called Plunk! for the BlackBerry PlayBook in free and premium versions. They offer up sixty puzzles with more to come. The game also starts heating up when you have multiple marbles to navigate.

The free version of Plunk! Lite offers up the first 12 levels for free. After that you can pick up Plunk Premium for $1.99.

PS: As an alternative there is a cool Ball Balance game from Kiril Boychev that offers similar gameplay in what seems to be a webworks app…

RIM Responds to BBM Canada’s Trademark Litigation

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 12:38 PM PST

BBM People

It looks like RIM's response to BBM Canada's trademark complaint is exactly what I thought it would be. To sum it up RIM is saying that there is no overlap between BBM Canada's broadcast statistics service and a RIM's instant messaging platform. Just to give you an idea "Material Innovations, Inc." owns the trademark for BBM for "Agricultural machines, namely, big bale mulchers" in the United States .RIM also has a trademark for BBM but it is from 2010.

Here is RIM's exact statement:

RIM Media Statement – BBM Trademark Litigation: December 23, 2011

"Since its launch in July 2005, BlackBerry Messenger has become a tremendously popular social networking service. In 2010, RIM started to formally adopt the BBM acronym, which had, at that point, already been organically coined and widely used by BlackBerry Messenger customers as a natural abbreviation of the BlackBerry Messenger name.  The services associated with RIM's BBM offering clearly do not overlap with BBM Canada's services and the two marks are therefore eligible to co-exist under Canadian trademark law. The two companies are in different industries and have never been competitors in any area. We believe that BBM Canada is attempting to obtain trademark protection for the BBM acronym that is well beyond the narrow range of the services it provides and well beyond the scope of rights afforded by Canadian trademark law. RIM has therefore asked the Court to dismiss the application and award costs to RIM. Further, for clarity, RIM's application to register BBM as a trademark with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) is pending and we are confident that a registration will eventually issue. The inference by BBM Canada that CIPO has refused RIM's BBM trademark application is quite frankly very misleading."

As it turns out there are actually 22 trademarks with BBM in their name though it looks like BBM Canada has the oldest "live" trademark in the US. According to the Trademark I saw the BBM Canada "BBM" trademark covers "ADVERTISING CONSULTATION, NAMELY, PROVIDING ANALYSIS IN THE FORM OF AN IMPARTIAL MEASUREMENT OF THE CIRCULATION, COVERAGE AND AUDIENCE OF ALL TYPES OF ADVERTISING MEDIA." which is obviously something you would confuse with BBM.

Change Icons On Your Dingled PlayBook

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 07:58 AM PST

Sometimes it’s the simple things. I’m the type of person who will go to great lengths to make something very simple happen, just because I can, or because it’s a challenge. While I haven’t Dingled my PlayBook yet, more and reasons to do so are popping up. Custom themes have long been a beloved BlackBerry feature, so the lack of theme support has been somewhat disappointing for those of us on OS 7 devices and PlayBooks. Even the shiniest of new toys have a tendency to lose their sheen over time without the ability to change things up and keep it fresh.

Enter Dingleberry.

Sith_Apprentice, a long-time member over at CrackBerry.com, posted this thread showing off his early successes changing the icons on his Dingled PlayBook.

Though there are no instructional details provided in the thread, Sith’s success has opened up yet another new sandbox for adventurous tinkerers to play in. It also comes with the promise hope of easy theming capabilities in the future. I can’t wait!

Adventure Ball – Physics Game for PlayBook

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 07:51 AM PST

Adventure Ball2 Adventure Ball3

A friend pointed out Adventure Ball to me and at first I was not really interested. Still I played it on his PlayBook and the game was actually quite fun. Its sort of a mix between those canon aiming games of old together with Angry Birds but with much simpler graphics. Its actually pretty fun to play and the puzzles get really hard with 80 of them available.

You can pick up Adventure Ball for $0.99 in App World

CAMultimate Camera Tools and Photo Effects Editor

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 07:05 AM PST

 Cam Ultimate2 Cam Ultimate

PrettyFang let us know about their CAMultimate Camera Tools and Photo Effects Editor that packs quite a few camera and photo utilities into one app. Originally it was only available for the Torch 9800 but they let us know that it now supports most of the OS 6.0+ devices but not all. The app includes tons of little sub-apps/features that let you do things like take a burst of pictures or even mute the shutter sound (mostly). All in all a pretty feature full app for the price.

Features include:

  • CAMeffects – Create image effects on new and existing photos with over 18 different camera filters! (can cost you at least $0.99 if bought separately from elsewhere) The CAMeffects mode also includes a Pencil Sketch Effect that amends your photo simulating a pencil sketch effect (Can cost you $2.99 if bought separately from elsewhere)
  • CAMfun- Create fun effects on new and existing photos! Includes a Fat Face Effect (Can cost you $0.99 if bought separately from elsewhere) that you can apply to a new photo or to one you already have!
  • CAMshout mode – Surprise your friends with the unique CAMshout that gives a shout out to your friends before you take a photo, ideal for making your friends aware of when you are taking that pic!
  • CAM-QR mode – Read and create your very own QR codes! Most QR readers on the market today allow you to read QR codes, but with ours not only can you read, but you can also create your very own QR codes direct from your own Blackberry device!
  • View Gallery mode – View all your photos that you have taken with CAMultimate and you can keep, delete, or send to your friends!
  • GEOtag Images – Add a GEOtag which will save your location tag to the properties of the image taken in standard camera mode! A geotag gives your location and saves the location tag to the image of your photo in Standard CAM mode so your friends know the place where you took the photo!
  • CAMburst – Take three photos in a short space of time! (Can cost you $0.99 if bought seperately from elsewhere) so you can take multiple shots in one go, ensuring that you dont miss that golden opportunity when it matters the most!
  • CAMtimer – A 3 or 5 second self timer that will take a photo automatically for you (Can cost you $0.99 if bought seperately from elsewhere) This mode allows you to predefine a timer and set CAMultimate to take the photo image for you automatically after a few seconds! No more of "which button do I press" and "I'm not sure it took the photo, lets try again" scenarios, saving you so much hassle!
  • CAMmute – Captures the onscreen image as a photo without the shutter sound so that if you find the shutter sound annoying, then why not take a quick simple capture of the screen using the CAMmute mode, which simulates a camera shutter mute see below for further details.
  • Crop Image – Only want your friends to see just part of an image? Well now you can; by cropping a photo and saving it. Cut out parts that spoil your photos and only really show what really matters! (this feature can set you back RRP $0.99 if bought seperately from elsewhere)
  • Edit Pictures – Apply any effect and crop any image as and when you like!

You can find CAMultimate Camera Tools and Photo Effects Editor in App World for $3.99
