IM+ Introduces Their Own Cross Platform Messenger “Beep” in Beta

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 02:03 AM PST

 IM plus beep

Shape let us know about their latest BlackBerry Beta app which integrates their new Beep cross platform messaging service with IM+. I am not sure if we need yet another cross platform messenger but at least this one is baked into the new IM+. The way it works is by merging your Address Book with your instant messaging client. Everybody on IM+ Beep is using their phone number as their username sort of like how WhatsApp works.

Either way you can try out the new version of IM+ in their v10.0.0.12 beta at the links below:

PS: The most active beta testers will be rewarded with licenses for IM+ Pro or other SHAPE Services products of their choice.

BlackBerry 10 Announcement

Well it is all about how you translate today but Alec Saunders of RIM has confirmed that the BlackBerry 7.1 SDK will be going gold today. They are in Singapore so today may mean the next 24 hours but still that means it is coming out of beta. That is nice to see before the OS actually ships. Now we can only hope that carriers are getting their act together and releasing these 7.1 OS builds starting this month!

You can check this page to see if the BlackBerry Java SDK 7.1 Gold release goes live.

Twitter for BlackBerry

RIM has finally brought their Twitter for BlackBerry v2.1 update out of beta today. This new version brings my favorite feature, multi-account support, to the masses. This means I can finally switch between my personal and BerryReview Twitter account though hopefully RIM will allow us to do it at the same time soon!

The full change log includes:

  • Multi-Account Support – Have up to five accounts on your Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones app. Switch between accounts and cross-post Tweets and Retweets from one account to another without switching the current account view.
  • Enhanced "Share with BBM™" functionality – Easily share Tweets with BBM Contacts and Groups.
  • View multiple Twitter accounts in a single timeline – View a stream of Tweets from up to five Twitter accounts in the Social Feeds timeline, or opt to filter individual Twitter accounts.
  • Post a Tweet to multiple Twitter Accounts – Publish a Tweet to one or more Twitter accounts simultaneously using Social Feeds.

You can pick up the updated Twitter for BlackBerry for OS 5.0+ devices in App World or read the announcement on RIM's blog. Keep in mind it may take up to 24 hours to show up.

BBX Renamed to BlackBerry 10 After RIM Barred from Using BBX Name

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 08:09 PM PST

BlackBerry 10 Announcement

Now this is a sad day for RIM marketing. After solid names like the Bold and Curve and a very promising BBX name for the future BlackBerry QNX based platform we have RIM changing things again. BASIS has put out a press release that a US Federal court in Albuquerque has banned RIM from using the BBX name. That means RIM was immediately barred from using the BBX trademark at BlackBerry DevCon in Singapore.

That has not stopped RIM and they have now renamed BBX as BlackBerry 10 for RIM's next generation smartphones. I guess RIM sees the need to jump directly from 7 to 10 but I think they should have gone with a totally different naming scheme. Still BlackBerry 10 is not a bad name but my guess is people will still call it BBX. :)

Press release from Basis below:

US Federal Court Bars RIM (BlackBerry) from Using BASIS’ BBX Trademark

The United States Federal Court in Albuquerque today granted a temporary restraining order (TRO) against Research in Motion (RIM), immediately barring RIM from using BASIS International Ltd.'s incontestable federally registered BBX trademark at RIM's Asian DevCon on December 7-8 in Singapore.

BASIS’ BBX running on a sampling of mobile devices available at http://links.basis.com/buidemos (Photo: Business Wire)

RIM had refused BASIS' requests to stop the infringement at the DevCon conference, which resulted in BASIS filing for the TRO.

In rejecting RIM's arguments against the issuance of a TRO, the court found that, "The BBX mark is identical to the mark which RIM is allegedly using to present its BBX product (TRO page 8)." and "despite the fact that the two companies are not direct competitors, the parties' respective BBX products are highly related and target the same class of consumers, that is, business application software developers (TRO page 9)." The court went on to concur with BASIS that "The alleged infringement is likely to cause customers and prospective customers to wrongly believe that the software applications created using BASIS's development tools are only compatible with RIM's BBX operating system (TRO page 11)."

The order described how the "Courts use a well-established four-part test to decide whether to grant injunctive relief (TRO page 7)" and concluded that "Accordingly, after considering all the factors relative to a determination of whether an injunction should be granted, the Court finds that all factors weigh in favor of BASIS (TRO page 8)."

See BASIS' latest generation of BBX in action by running the sample restaurant tip calculator and home mortgage calculator applications from links.basis.com/buidemos to experience BASIS' BBX platform-independent solutions on your own smartphone or tablet.

Latest BlackBerry PlayBook OS Fix Gets Jailbroken Again… Cat & Mouse Game Begins?

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 06:51 PM PST

DingleBerry PlayBook new

The thing with jailbreaks is that once you have your first then the rest of your code is suddenly open to poke around and find more soft spots to exploit. RIM just patched the Samba exploit that allowed the Dingleberry team to jailbreak/root the BlackBerry PlayBook. Now one of the devs of Dingleberry, @cmwdotme, has announced on twitter that the latest PlayBook OS 1.0.8.6067 has been jailbroken yet again.

UPDATE: @cmwdotme clarified for me that this new exploit does not have to do with SSH. He was just making a comment in his tweet.

According to cmwdotme this new exploit is "based on the “DenyUsers=root” on SSH and RIM clearing the .ssh directory on boot." My guess is we will see a QNX OS update coming right after a new Dingleberry tool is released at www.dingleberry.it to exploit this new vulnerability.

So any bets on how long this cat and mouse game will last?

RIM Confirms Fix of “Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability” (Aka Dingleberry Jailbreak)

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 02:16 PM PST

RIM Documentation Dingleberry

RIM has plucked the Dingleberry! They have finally come out of the closet with their documentation on the current root exploit of the BlackBerry PlayBook. They have clarified that the latest BlackBerry PlayBook OS 1.0.8.6067 fixes the exploit that allowed the Dingleberry creators to gain escalated privileges. They don't go into to much detail but this is exactly what system admins were looking for from RIM. RIM has also confirmed the fix on their blog along with mentioning that the new OS brings daylight savings time fixes.

Check out the full details on what RIM calls the "Elevation of privilege vulnerability in file sharing capability impacts the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet software" or just read it below:

Elevation of privilege vulnerability in file sharing capability impacts the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet software

Article ID: KB29191

Type:   Security Advisory

First Published: 12-06-2011

Last Modified: 12-06-2011

Product(s) Affected:

  • BlackBerry® PlayBook™

Products

  • Affected Software
    • BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet software version 1.0.8.4985 and earlier
  • Non Affected Software
    • BlackBerry PlayBook tablet software version 1.0.8.6067 or later
  • Are BlackBerry smartphones and the BlackBerry Device Software affected?
    • No.

Issue Severity

This vulnerability has a Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) score of 7.2.

Overview

A vulnerability that could allow elevation of access privilege on a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet exists in the BlackBerry PlayBook service used to share files over a USB connection between the tablet and a computer running BlackBerry Desktop Software. This vulnerability cannot be exploited by a remote attacker and it presents a low security risk of elevation of privilege attacks against BlackBerry PlayBook tablet users. RIM is not currently aware of this issue being used in attacks against BlackBerry customers.

A user could execute specially crafted code to use this vulnerability to manipulate a BlackBerry PlayBook backup archive file and alter a specific configuration file in order to gain root user privileges (access to system administration-level functionality) on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. An individual attempting to use this vulnerability to gain root privileges to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet requires local access to both the tablet and to the connected computer running BlackBerry Desktop Software, including knowledge of any security passwords that are set.

Who should read this advisory

  • BlackBerry PlayBook tablet users
  • IT administrators who deploy BlackBerry PlayBook tablets in an enterprise

Who should apply the software fix(es)

  • BlackBerry PlayBook tablet users
  • IT administrators who deploy BlackBerry PlayBook tablets in an enterprise

Recommendation

Complete the resolution actions documented in this advisory. RIM recommends that all users apply the available software update to fully protect their BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

References

CVE® Identifier: CVE-2011-0291

Problem

If the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet user turns on the File Sharing option, the user can share files over an active USB connection between the tablet and a computer that is running BlackBerry Desktop Software. The user can use the BlackBerry Desktop Software to create a backup archive file of part of the contents of the BlackBerry PlayBook file system. The archive file is stored on the connected computer.

A user with local access to the tablet and the computer could use the vulnerability to manipulate a BlackBerry PlayBook backup archive file and alter a File Sharing service configuration file in order to gain root user privileges on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. As best practices, users should set a strong BlackBerry PlayBook tablet password, and also set a password to protect shared files when enabling file sharing.

Impact

A successful exploitation of the vulnerability would allow a user to alter his or her BlackBerry PlayBook tablet software in order to obtain access to systems or applications not officially authorized or distributed by RIM. As a result, the user could unknowingly bypass security controls protecting the BlackBerry Tablet OS and his or her user data. Those protections are provided by design to a user running with standard privileges. Under the conditions of the compromise, the tablet could be more susceptible to performance and stability concerns, and could be at higher risk for potential security vulnerabilities against which the user would otherwise be protected.

Mitigations

RIM recommends that all users apply the available software update (BlackBerry PlayBook tablet software version 1.0.8.6067) to fully protect their BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. However, prior to the software update being applied, the risk of exploitation is mitigated by the fact that the user can only exploit the vulnerability locally on a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet while having access to the BlackBerry PlayBook backup file on a computer that is connected to the tablet over USB.

Resolution

RIM has issued BlackBerry PlayBook tablet software version 1.0.8.6067 which resolves this vulnerability on affected versions of the tablet. Update your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet software to version 1.0.8.6067 or later to apply the update.

Note: This BlackBerry PlayBook tablet update includes all previously released security updates to the BlackBerry Tablet OS.

Update by Accessing the Software Update Notification

Your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet uses notifications to keep you informed about software updates. When a new software update notification comes in, it appears in the BlackBerry PlayBook status ribbon at the top of the screen.

Simply view your notifications and follow the steps to access the latest software update notification and complete the software update.

Manually Check for Software Updates

  1. From the home screen, tap to open Options.
  2. Tap Software Updates.
  3. Tap Check for Updates.

After you update your software, the screen will indicate that you have installed BlackBerry Tablet OS version 1.0.8.6067 or later.

Workaround

All workarounds should be considered temporary measures for customers to employ if they cannot install the update immediately or must perform standard testing and risk analysis. RIM recommends that customers without these requirements simply install the update to secure their systems.

Encrypt backup files

If a user chooses to create a backup of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, the user should select theEncrypt backup file check box during the backup process to encrypt the backup file. For more information, see Backup smartphone or tablet data in the BlackBerry Desktop Software User Guide.

Related best practices

  • To ensure the security of user data, users should store their backup files securely, whether they choose to encrypt them or not.
  • To increase the difficulty of decrypting a backup file, users should always use a strong password to encrypt the data. A strong password has the following characteristics:
    • includes punctuation marks, numbers, capital and lowercase letters
    • does not include the user name, account name, or any word or phrase that would be easily guessed
    • is not the same as the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet password

Additional Information

Have any BlackBerry customers been subject to an attack that exploits this vulnerability?

RIM is not aware of any attacks on or specifically targeting BlackBerry PlayBook tablet users.

How would an attacker exploit this vulnerability?

An individual attempting to use this vulnerability to gain root privileges to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet requires local access to both the tablet and to the connected computer running BlackBerry Desktop Software, including knowledge of any security passwords that are set. A local user could execute specially crafted code to use this vulnerability to manipulate a BlackBerry PlayBook backup archive file and alter a specific configuration file in order to gain root user privileges (access to system administration-level functionality) on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

What component does this vulnerability affect?

This vulnerability affects the file sharing capability of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

What risks might a user incur by exploiting this vulnerability on his or her tablet?

A successful exploitation of the vulnerability would allow a user to alter his or her BlackBerry PlayBook tablet software in order to obtain access to systems or applications not officially authorized or distributed by RIM. As a result, the user could unknowingly bypass security controls protecting the BlackBerry Tablet OS and his or her user data. Those protections are provided by design to a user running with standard privileges. Under the conditions of the compromise, the tablet could be more susceptible to performance and stability concerns, and could be at higher risk for potential security vulnerabilities against which the user would otherwise be protected.

Does the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet force me to update my software?

No, your action is required to update the software. Your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet uses notifications to keep you informed about software updates and allows you to easily complete a software update. You can also manually check for software updates. See the Resolution section of this advisory for steps to update your software.

How can I find out what version of BlackBerry Tablet OS I am running?

From the home screen, tap the Settings icon, tap About, and view the OS Version field in the General settings.

Are new (still in the box) BlackBerry PlayBook tablets exposed to this vulnerability?

No. During the initial setup process, the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will download and install the latest version of the BlackBerry Tablet OS, which will be version 1.0.8.6067 or later. The fix for this vulnerability is included in all future versions of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet software.

What is CVE?

Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) is a dictionary of common names (CVE Identifiers) for publicly known information security vulnerabilities maintained by the MITRE corporation.

What is CVSS?

CVSS is a vendor agnostic, industry open standard designed to convey the severity of vulnerabilities. CVSS scores may be used to determine the urgency for update deployment within an organization. CVSS scores range from 0.0 (no vulnerability) to 10.0 (critical). RIM uses CVSS for vulnerability assessments to present an immutable characterization of security issues. RIM assigns all relevant security issues a non-zero score.

RIM Shows Off Some Future USB Accessory Tinkering on the PlayBook

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 08:47 AM PST

PlayBook USB Prototyping PlayBook USB Prototyping 2

I am not sure what took RIM months since DevCon to post up this video but its worth mentioning. Mathias and Fredrik from The Astonishing Tribe were showing off a Arduino platform board hooked up to a PlayBook over USB (it looks like its getting power that way too). RIM is showing this off as the PlayBook being perfect for tinkerers and prototypers but I know there are a good number of developers who want low level access to hardware like the USB, Bluetooth, and more. Alec Saunders confirmed as much in our recent interview with him.

The question is when this sort of access will come to the PlayBook OS 2.0 beta so devs can prepare it for the OS 2.0 launch. Hopefully RIM hits the gas and keeps on pushing out significant updates. Check out the full details on RIM's DevBlog or in the video below:

BlackBerry PlayBook Dingleberry Root Exploit Explained

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 08:20 AM PST

Dingleberry

I got a chance to jailbreak my BlackBerry PlayBook with Dingleberry and play with it including Android Market and I found it very interesting to see how the developers managed to gain root access. Two of the devs, @cmwdotme and @xpvqs have explained that Dingleberry takes advantage of the fact that RIM does not sign their backups allowing them to modify the Samba config file (smb.conf) and restore it to execute whatever commands they wish as root. In case you don't know Samba is a popular opensource network file server that RIM uses to allow you to access the PlayBook drives over Wi-Fi. This should be very easy to fix for RIM and according to devs RIM already has a patch ready and has known about the issue for awhile.

The thing is that RIM has known about this security issue for awhile. CrackBerry confirmed that they had pointed this out to RIM but it has been pretty common knowledge for awhile. Developers have been struggling with it on the official BlackBerry support forums when they discovered that BlackBerry PlayBook backup files are simply zip files in *.bbb format. This means that anybody can extract apps and other files from the backups and then decompile both AIR and WebWorks apps easily for pirates. That thread is from back in April so RIM has known about this for awhile but we have not seen any changes.

RIM will probably roll out a patch for this Samba exploit and the backup signing altogether. On the other hand it would also be nice if RIM could provide some security for developers in protecting their code and applications from being pirated…

RPost has been doing their email proof, email encryption, and electronic signatures in their form of "electronic registered mail" for a while. Now they are extending that functionality for their users to BlackBerrys with their latest BlackBerry app. They are even offering BlackBerry users 10 free complimentary "registered emails" to try out the service. In short you can be sure that your recipient gets your message.

The RPost app is not available through BlackBerry App World but directly from them at www.rpost.com/blackberry. You can check out their full launch announcement below:

RPost Debuts Blackberry App with Integrated Registered Email Services

BlackBerry users can now send Registered Email messages with one click, providing time-stamped legal records of delivery, with options for encryption to secure content delivered to any recipient anywhere.

Los Angeles, CA — December 5, 2011 — RPost has extended its Registered Email® services to create a new class of mobile messaging, bringing the security of BlackBerry email to any recipient regardless of where they access their email. This new RPost app for BlackBerry is tightly integrated into the native 'compose email' function, permitting users to scroll up one position to 'Send Registered' email messages.

"BlackBerry messaging is known for its security. But, that security ends if the recipient is not also a BlackBerry user on the same network," adds Khan. "RPost relieves the sender from concerns about how the recipient will access their email and whether their point of access will cause a data security breach." With RPost encryption options, the sender knows – and has proof – that the message was received encrypted by the recipient whether on-or-off the BlackBerry messaging network.

RPost's BlackBerry application allows users to send Registered Email messages for the most legally robust record of who said what to whom and when by email, with time-stamped proof of message content delivered to any recipient's inbox.

The sender can also opt to:

1. Encrypt to any recipient address regardless of how the recipient accesses their email, with proof of compliance with HIPAA and other data privacy mandates;

2. Track email opening with an official time-stamp of the content opened;

3. Send documents specially formatted to obtain recipient electronic signatures on the attached document;

4. Include a client reference code with the message. RPost will later embed this code into the Registered Receipt™ emails and usage reports; and

5. Receive auditable and time-stamped proof of content in replies to the BlackBerry sender's email, serving as records of responses to offers, messages, and negotiations.

"Our customers who are real estate brokers have been asking for a tool that will let them send offers and counter offers from their BlackBerry devices when they are on the move, with robust time-stamped records of the offer details received under deadline," remarks RPost CEO Zafar Khan. "We brought this and more to their mobile messaging in a manner that benefits all of our users, all over the world." This release is now available in English, French, Spanish, German and Portuguese.

For those BlackBerry users that send important email and worry about how to maintain useful records, users can finally have a court-admissible record of selected high value correspondence automatically routed to any other email address or any email repository in the form of a Registered Receipt email. This simplifies compliance with records management mandates. Any holder of these Registered Receipt email records can have RPost later authenticate the record and reconstruct the validated original message content, time-stamps and delivery information on-demand. RPost neither stores a copy of email messages nor receipts.

The RPost technology has been granted 35 patents in 21 countries.

About RPost: RPost® is the global standard for email proof, message encryption and electronic signature services. Advanced Users: Dingleberry Jailbreak Allows for Android Market Install

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 06:03 AM PST

PlayBook Dingleberry Android Market

When I say this is for advanced users I REALLY REALLY mean it. If you are uncomfortable with the command line or simply find these instructions complex just leave it be for now. When Dingleberry was released we mentioned that it just gave you root privileges as of now but it would be up to devs and tinkerers to take it further. That has started happening with developers really digging into the QNX OS before RIM patches it up.

One of the developers of the Dingleberry root exploit, @neuralic, managed to get the Android Market running on the PlayBook. This is not the first time this has happened but this time it uses the new Dingleberry root exploit. This is in no way an easy task but I am halfway through so I thought I would share it with you. He posted the instructions on Pastie but you can also find them below. Keep in mind this is all more of a proof of concept for now and we take no responsibility if you mess up your PlayBook or anything else happens.

How to get the Android Market working on the BlackBerry PlayBook:

  1. Install the 2.0 beta on your playbook.
  2. Root your playbook using the dingleberry tool found at dingleberry.it
  3. Download the google apps package from http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version/Google_Apps
  4. Install and launch an android app packaged as a .bar file in order to set up the android system. I would recommend installing a launcher app of some kind since you will need one to launch the Market and related apps. A bunch can be found at http://playbookbars.com/
  5. Log into your playbook as root with an scp client (eg: WinSCP for windows). Copy the system folder in the google apps download to the root of your playbook and merge it with the system folder there.
  6. Open up a root ssh shell and remove "/system/app/SetupWizard.apk" (this can by done by typing in "mv /system/app/SetupWizard.apk /system/app/SetupWizard.apk.bak".
  7. Kill the running android player "cd /apps/sys.android.XXXX.ns/native/scripts" (XXXX will be different for each device) and run "./android-player-cmd.sh kill-android-core.sh"
  8. Launch a launcher app of some kind. Start up Android Market (or any other google app), enter your account details and it will start working. This trick will also install google chat and a few other goodies. The Android Market works and will install things after you do this.
  9. Play around with the Android player and find other cool things!

Other notes:

  • Messing with the Android Player causes stuff to break quite often! If you edit the wrong files, you will probably have to restore your device. You shouldn’t be able to do any permanent damage, but make sure to backup before playing with anything. I take no responsibility for damage to your device.
  • The above steps only work for apks installed from the Android Market. For other apks, you can temporarily replace the file "PackageInstaller.apk" in /system/app with the PackageInstaller.app from cyanogenmod. You must restore the original PackageInstaller.apk before the next time that the android player reloads. You can use this method to get apps that update themselves by downloading a .apk file to work (eg: HCL Launcher Updater)
  • You can get an "Android Player" launcher app for your playbook by using the script "install-android-player.sh" from the old android beta. This will boot up and let you pick a launcher without opening up a different app afterwards.

If you find anything interesting and want to share it with us, send me (@neuralic) or @xpvqs a message on twitter.

Free BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing App v2.0 Released

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 05:16 AM PST

Mobile Conferencing

RIM launched their v1.0 of BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing about 6 months ago and now they are up to v2.0. This new version makes it easier than ever to automatically turn an email into a conference call and manage conference calls on your BlackBerry.  New Features include:

  • Turn An Email Thread into a Conference Call – BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing helps users instantly schedule a conference call from an email thread, with just a few clicks. The sender and recipients of the email are included as meeting attendees, the email subject becomes the user’s meeting subject and part of the email message is automatically copied into the invite for reference. Users can also add conference call details from a stored profile.
  • Automatic Detection of Conference Call Details – Conference call information found in meeting invites in any calendar on the user’s BlackBerry smartphone is automatically recognized and set up for easy dial-in at the appointed time, helping the user stay organized and on time. In version 2, the engine that recognizes conference call details has been enhanced for improved accuracy.
  • Conference Call ID – Users can more easily keep track of the conference calls they’ve participated in. When the user joins a conference call, the meeting subject appears as the caller ID in the BlackBerry phone app. When the call is completed, the meeting subject appears in the user’s call log.
  • Conference Profiles Increased to 10 – Users can instantly add preset conference call details to almost any meeting they schedule by selecting from up to ten stored profiles.
  • Private Moderator Codes – Users can also keep moderator codes private. Invites sent using a preset conference profile include just the information participants need to join the call. If conference information found in a meeting invite is the user’s, the app accesses the stored profile to dial the user in as the moderator. The feature allows a meeting organizer to leave out the moderator code in an invite for privacy, without sacrificing the convenience of "Join Now" as the moderator, when the call arises.

You can pick up BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing v2.0 free in App World with more details at blackberry.com/mobileconferencing or find more info in the press release below:
