BBM Canada Suing RIM Over BBM Trademark

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 03:34 AM PST

BBM People

The legal battles continue for RIM. The Globe and Mail is reporting that a Canadian company, BBM Group, is suing RIM over them using the BBM name. I don't remember when RIM started simply calling BlackBerry Messenger BBM but it is a relatively new thing. On the other hand BBM Canada, a broadcast industry group, decided to sue RIM after attempts to negotiate with RIM failed. They tried to get RIM to pay for them to rebrand their groups name which has been around for awhile and they claim they own the trademark on BBM in both the US and Canada which they have used for six decades.

I am not sure where the confusion would come from between a instant messaging platform and a industry group that collects statistics on television and radio industries. That is usually the basis of trademark claims since they are issued for certain industries. For example, supermarkets are allowed to sell apple pie. :) Still I am not an intellectual property expert. Only time will tell how this drama will unfold.

  • Get driving directions to Tim Hortons locations

Tim Card® Balance Check

  • Check the balance of your Tim Card®

RIM Responds to BlackBerry 10 Rumor Saying it is “Simply False”

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 02:47 PM PST

RIM Response

What a surprise! RIM has responded to the BoyGenius's trusted source rumor from earlier today. They have simply stated on Twitter that "The anonymous claim suggesting otherwise is inaccurate and uninformed." They have also made a statement to AllThingsD that:

"As explained on our earnings call, the broad engineering impact of this decision and certain other factors significantly influenced the anticipated timing for the BlackBerry 10 devices. The anonymous claim suggesting otherwise is inaccurate and uninformed. As RIM has previously explained, and as Mike Lazaridis reiterated on the earnings call, we will not launch BlackBerry 10 devices until we know they are ready and we believe this new chip set architecture is required to deliver the world class user experience that our customers will expect. Any suggestion to the contrary is simply false."

Well if our previous analysis didn't do it for you then this should cover it. You have to love these anonymous reports and how they always seem to come from the same source… Still the thing is both RIM I succumbed to "feeding a troll."

Love in the Time of “Anonymous High-level RIM Employees”

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 09:09 AM PST

caution_tape

Every few months another "Anonymous High Level RIM Employee" seems to pick up the phone and call the BGR to share some doom or gloom. The latest entertainment comes from one of BGR's "most trusted sources" who is also a "high-level RIM employee." Here his some of the latest inflammatory tidbits out of this anonymous source who still seems to be working at RIM…

  1. "…the PlayBook 2.0 OS developers have been testing is a crystal clear window into the current state of BlackBerry 10 on smartphones. No email, no BlackBerry Messenger — it's almost identical"
    • This high level employee must have very limited access. I have actually used PlayBooks that have native email, contacts, calendar, etc (ActiveSync) though he is right about BBM. Still even RIM has said that native BBM is coming later…
  2. "Email and PIM is a better on an 8700 than it is on BlackBerry 10"
    1. Wait a minute. I thought there was no email or PIM?
  3. "We also have some more background on why RIM's BlackBerry 10 smartphones are delayed, and it has nothing to do with a new LTE chipset that RIM is waiting on…" "RIM is simply pushing this out as long as they can for one reason, they don't have a working product yet."
    • This "High Level RIM Employee" must have not been allowed to play with the Colt before it was made a dev-only device. Once RIM decided they needed LTE to make North American carriers happy they realized they would either have to stoop to Android LTE device battery horrors or wait for Qualcomm.
  4. "RIM is betting its business on a platform and ecosystem that isn't even as good as iPhone OS 1.0 or Android 2.0."
    • That is a pretty strong statement to make without any explanation. Keep in mind iOS 1.0 did not even have third party apps and Android 2.0 did not have pinch to zoom in the browser…
  5. "There's no room for a fourth ecosystem"
    • Says who?
  6. "and DingleBerry also works on BlackBerry 10."
    • It all depends on what you call BlackBerry 10… It is public information that it quasi works on the PlayBook OS 2.0 beta.

All in all this seems like some linkbait but its always entertaining. Still it is way to early to pass any judgment on BlackBerry 10 phones especially when RIMs announced timeline has it coming in the 2nd half of 2012. RIM should have had BlackBerry 10 or whatever you want to call their next generation platform ready way before 2012 but they definitely have a chance to reclaim their glory. Now it is all about proper execution.

PS: I still think it couldn't hurt if RIM hired a large team of "Ass Kickers" whose main job is to cut through the red tape and release products faster…

Devs: PhoneGap 1.3 & New WebWorks NFC Extension Released

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 09:07 AM PST

PhoneGap build3

The popular PhoneGap cross platform web app solution (recently acquired by Adobe) was updated to v1.3 this week. The new update brings a nice bit of growth with BlackBerry support since RIM is contributing directly to PhoneGap. This new version of PhoneGap also brings support for BlackBerry development on Mac OSX.

The change log for PhoneGap v1.3 specific updates for BlackBerry (full details):

  • Added OSX support. You can now develop for BlackBerry on a Mac.
  • Added download method to filetransfer
  • Updated PluginResult Exceptions to use latest naming scheme
  • Fixed a memory leak issue with WebWorks
  • Added Lifecycle changes and app.js functionality
  • Added activity and progress notification functionality

Another update worth noting for BlackBerry web developers is that RIM's developer relations team released an NFC extension for WebWorks that they have been working on on the GitHub page. Josep let me know that RIM has posted a whole explanation about the extension in the forums along with a primer to get WebWorks developers started.

Learning to type on your New PlayBook? Or feel you’re the Master?

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 05:48 AM PST

Typing Challenge is game that helps you either get the hang of typing on a virtual keyboard, or can help you prove your skills!  Words will appear on the screen, and fall towards the bottom, you must type the words before they go off the screen.   I know I’ve been using it to practice in portrait mode, and it also works in landscape.  It is a great mix of learning tool and game.  Get your free copy from AppWorld and get those fingers working.
