Carriers Possibly Spying on BlackBerry Users with Carrier IQ – Definitely on Android Posted: 30 Nov 2011 03:14 PM PST The latest craziness to sweet the carrier conspiracy underground is a company called Carrier IQ that is supposedly helping quite a few carriers spy on their customers. Security researcher Trevor Eckhart posted video proof of how Carrier IQ logs every text message, Google search, and phone number typed on an Android phone. He offhand mentions that it also is done on HTC, BlackBerry, and Nokia phones without going into any specifics. I have been trying to dig in further but have not seen any more mention that any such Carrier IQ app on BlackBerry phones from carriers. The thing is I highly doubt it is since it would either have to be built in by RIM into the core OS or have to be a third party module that somebody would definitely have spotted by now. I doubt it would be built into the core because this is almost the same case as when Etisalat in the UAE pushed software to their users BlackBerrys that monitored their emails. RIM clearly responded in this PDF saying they had nothing to do with it and offered a clear setup to remove it. In other words somebody would have spotted it by now if it was on BlackBerrys. Still I am dying to know for sure… If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Dec 15th App World 3.1 Update Bringing Content Ratings – Devs Need to Rate Their Apps Posted: 30 Nov 2011 11:36 AM PST RIM just put up an announcement for Devs on their DevBlog that they are rolling out content ratings for all the content in App World. The are rolling out a new version of App World v3.1 on December 15th that will make use of the new ratings and filter out anything above the selected rating level. Developers have from today until Dec 15th to rate their apps or else they get automatically rated. RIM is introducing a new Adult (18+) content level which makes me wonder if Adult content is coming… Every app will get a default rating of G (General) unless it is in one of the categories below where it will get a Teen default rating:
Also any app or theme with descriptions that contain the terms "BBM™", "Facebook", "Twitter", "chat", "dating", "social networking" and "message" will also receive a default rating of T (Teen). Any app that includes "Social networking, community or other User Generated Content" will automatically be given a "Teen" rating. Check out the details at the DevBlog. Hopefully RIM also has some sort of password parents can set on content controls to lock in the ratings. Here is what they will look like on BlackBerrys: If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Investigating BlackBerry PlayBook Rooting – Dingleberry Gets Official Website Posted: 30 Nov 2011 10:50 AM PST
RIM has come out and confirmed that they are aware of the Twitter devs/researchers who claim to have jailbroken/rooted the BlackBerry PlayBook. Their statement below says they are in contact with one of the security researchers about the vulnerability and are aware they plan on releasing a tool to jailbreak the devices. Check out the full statement below:
They more or less confirmed the same thing to Reuters. It should be interesting to see how RIM handles this. I cannot think of a previous case where RIM has faced anything like this other than the WebKit browser issue in BlackBerry 6 devices. On a side note one of the researchers has confirmed on Twitter that the official Dingleberry PlayBook jailbreak site is www.dingleberry.it If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

PlayBook Screenshots Show BBM, Video Store, & Other Mystery Icons Posted: 30 Nov 2011 07:24 AM PST
The sharp eyes at BBIn.in noticed some interesting icons in the screenshots RIM was showing during their BlackBerry Mobile Fusion webcast yesterday. What they noticed first was what looks like a native BBM icon. The device shown is not connected to a bridge and has the regular bridge BBM icon in the bridge folder introduced in OS 2.0 but it has yet another BBM icon on the homescreen. Also of interest are icons for the previously announced Video Store, Twitter, and what looks like a new music icon. The Twitter icon could just be a website shortcut but the music icon looks like the iTunes icon we saw in the BlackBerry London mockups. Anybody care to speculate further? Thanks JD for the tip! Rumor: First BBX Phone (Aka London) Now Called the Surfboard? Posted: 30 Nov 2011 07:15 AM PST Take this rumor with a huge grain of salt but we always enjoy speculating about the upcoming BBX line of phones from RIM. The latest rumor coming from BlackBerryOS is that the BlackBerry London mockup we saw before has now been renamed the "Surfboard." The rumor doesn't specifically mention if this is simply yet another codename for the device but chances are slim that it will launch with that name. On the other hand the rumor does say that RIM has lined up sponsors like BodyGlove and Billabong to show off the device at Surf-fest USA. We usually wouldn't mention such a rumor but I thought it would be fun to simply ask all of you what you would call the first BBX powered phone? I vote for the BlackBerry Phoenix! App World Website Homepage Gets Revamped – Clear Your Cache Posted: 30 Nov 2011 06:53 AM PST I have been waiting for RIM to revamp and update their BlackBerry App World desktop website and they seem to be doing it slowly. I was hoping for things like higher resolution screenshots and more AJAX features but Mike @BBEmpire (thanks Tashanna!) noticed that RIM has simply revamped the App World homepage. The new homepage features bigger and cleaner images in the featured carousel along with other tweaks. I don't see any mention of the revamp in RIM's release notes so it is probably a small thing. Check out the new homepage for App World here. If you see it all wonkey like the images below you need to clear your browser content cache. BerryWeather Free Updated to v2.6.1 to Add OS 7.0 Support Posted: 30 Nov 2011 05:38 AM PST The premium version of the BerryWeather (Aka BeWeather) app was updated to v2.6.12 way back in August but the free ad supported version did not get an update. Thankfully Bellshare has updated the free version of BerryWeather to v2.6.1 this week. The main reason this is important is because it adds OS 7.0 support along with other features. If you were using BerryWeather before you can pick up the free version in App World or the premium version for $9.99. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
