Mini Review: BlackBerry PlayBook USA On-Device GPS Map (Offline Map) Posted: 07 Sep 2011 02:44 PM PDT Developer: Skylab Mobilesystems Ltd. Skylab recently released a bunch of city and country offline maps for Blackberry Playbook. This was very exciting news, as currently most the map applications require downloading the maps online and caching the trip. However, Skylab seems to be playing marketing games here, as the data is only on device when you browse to a location and cache it online. So this is really not a real on-device map like many other GPS apps in different platforms (TomTom, Igo, Navigon) where the full map is stored on your device. Those apps will work fine perfectly without any data connectivity. On the other hand Skylab’s software will not. Also, their info on their application page is misleading too: “This offline map is stored on your PlayBook™, once you download the entire app, you are good to go. “. I downloaded the app (a 450 Mb download) and was very hopeful. On my first run, it told me I didn’t have any cached data and it will start downloading. I was thinking, great it will download the whole US maps and I’ll be good. Nope. It only downloaded where I was currently located. Above picture is when I scroll down a bit from my current location a bit while offline. Funny enough, I went out to the full US map while online, quickly zoomed into one location and waited 30 seconds. The results weren’t pleasing either: The options in the app is very limited as well, there really isn’t much to customize there: There is no search, no navigation, no voice prompts, etc. So if you need directions or voice navigation you won’t find it here. And finally to drop the nail into this app’s coffin, I was laying down on my bed near the window. The app showed me as speeding at a whooping 20 miles (32Km) /hr. Next I went outside, set on a chair. Now I was going at 80miles(128Km)/hr. That is just not right (Unless my house was moving that fast beyond my knowledge ) The maps are provided by OpenStreetMap project. I wouldn’t call them the most reliable (in comparison to Navteq and TeleAtlas), but they are alright. Overall, $9.99 is an overkill for this app, the description is misleading and it does not work. I would highly recommend staying AWAY from it. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Everybody else has to pay $0.99 for the app in App World. FilterLab lets you transform your pictures by applying filters to them and then sharing them to Facebook, Twitter, BBM, and email. It simply adds a menu item to your camera letting you send your shot to FilterLab and apply one of their 15 filters. From the reviews it looks like the app is pretty solid until recent updates but hopefully that will be fixed. BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac v2.2 in Beta Zone for NA Users Posted: 07 Sep 2011 12:26 PM PDT I am not sure why RIM is limiting this to NA Mac users but if you happen to be one head on over to the Beta Zone for the update. This brings us to v2.2 from the previous v2.1.2. I did not originally have the program available to me until I changed my profile in the Beta Zone to say I have a Mac. No words on what this update brings but RIM wants users to focus on the core functionality for testing. You can pick up the update if you are eligible at www.blackberry.com/beta If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

T-Mobile Offering BlackBerry Bold 9900 to Developers for $199 With No Activation Fee Posted: 07 Sep 2011 08:16 AM PDT T-Mobile might be selling the BlackBerry Bold 9900 to customers for $299 but one of our tipsters let us know about a program T-Mobile is running for BlackBerry developers. Developers can get the BlackBerry Bold 9900 for $199.99 for a limited time after a $50 mail in rebate. T-Mobile did something similar in the past together with RIM for previous devices so its nice to see them continuing. The offer for developers expires on November 1st 2011 and requires a 2 year agreement though they nicely waive the $35 activation fee. No word on if this offer is also good for users who are upgrading. To get the deal you need to call 1-866-464-8662 and select option 3. After that you need to mention promo code 7490TMOFAV to get the deal. They also don't mention if you need to prove you are a developer but that should be easy since anybody can be a developer these days. They also have promos for the Curve 9300 (Free) and Bold 9780 ($74.99) but I recommend the Bold 9900 if you can afford it. I also noticed a page for the PlayBook but they don't have a discount for it. Check out the deal at www.rimdevelopers.com They also have a list of resources, and links for developers to find out more information about developing for RIM. Also for those interesting in upgrading, they have links to the trade-up program where you can get some $ for your old BlackBerry device. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

BlackBerry Torch 9860 & Curve 9360 Spotted in T-Mobile Inventory System Posted: 07 Sep 2011 07:05 AM PDT We already had it on good authority that T-Mobile would be getting the BlackBerry Curve 9360 but things have been back and forth about the all touch Torch 9860. We know that RIM has an AWS version of the 9860 that would work on T-Mobile but we have been getting conflicting signals on if they decided to carry it in the end. Thanks to TmoNews we have a leaked T-Mobile inventory screenshot showing both the Torch 9860 and Curve 9360 in their system. For those of you who were looking for a full touch device on a GSM carrier stateside I hope this pans out! It would be T-Mobiles first all touch BlackBerry. Thanks GP for sending this one in! BlackBerry App World 3.0 Change Log – Website Getting Iterative Updates Posted: 07 Sep 2011 06:36 AM PDT We mentioned that App World was officially updated to v3.0 for all users yesterday but we did not have an official change log. Thanks to their official forums admins we now have one you can see below. The other thing I noticed while looking through the documentation is that the App World website, vendor portal, and purchasing API have been getting regular iterative updates in the form of maintenance releases. We knew about at least one of those but it turns out that RIM is now on App World 3.0 MR3 for their website. That includes the initial 3.0 website rollout on July 5th along with a August 4th MR1, August 23rd MR2, and September 2nd MR3. You can check out those change logs here but they mostly seem to be cleaning out bugs. This is a godsend because RIM previously used to wait for a major version update to fix bugs on their website like the annoying Firefox search bug in v2.0. Here is the change log for the on device App World 3.0 release (Release notes here) Announcing App World 3.0Product OverviewExplore the sleek new BlackBerry® App World™ storefront, where a world of inspiration is waiting for you. RIM Sponsoring 50 Android Developer Meetups to Promote PlayBook Android Player Posted: 07 Sep 2011 05:43 AM PDT A friend pointed out that RIM is really starting to make themselves known to Android developers and other developer communities on Meetup. Until now they have been using it to court BlackBerry developers with meetups all over the place and a few web developers but now they are clearly sponsoring Android developer meetups in anticipation of the Android Player for the PlayBook. We know that RIM is releasing the Android Player to developers at least before DevCon but other than that this is another sign that it is coming soon. On RIM's Meetup.com sponsorship page for the "Android Player for BlackBerry PlayBook it states that they are sponsoring 50 meetups across the country. Here are the details:
So far they have 35 meetups listed on their sponsor page for the Android Player with 10,184 developer members in total. In short RIM is not wasting any time in getting the word out and laying the groundwork. That is interesting because RIM has been very mum about the Android Player so far… If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
