Gist for BlackBerry v1.5.48 Released With BlackBerry 7 Support Posted: 14 Sep 2011 02:03 AM PDT The speedy App World update notification system let me know today that Gist has been updated to v1.5.48. When we first were tipped to the update we thought it was just an incremental bug fix but it turns out that these tiny version increments are big. The last one brought us BBM integration and this tiny update brings OS 7 device compatibility. According to the change log it also is now available in more countries. Check out more details at http://gist.com/blackberry or download it free in App World If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Patents Rotating Keyboard Keys – Possibly for Previous Rotating Keyboard Patent? Posted: 13 Sep 2011 07:21 PM PDT I am not sure what to make of this RIM patent Lucas @N4BB spotted for rotating keyboards. This comes after RIM's patent in August of last year for a rotating keyboard. At first it would make sense for software keyboards but the whole patent seems to be focused on physical buttons that suddenly rotate perpendicularly based on you running a different application. It could be RIM had to say it is a hardware function to get a patent since software patents are harder to win but who knows. Or maybe there is some project management exec at RIM mandating that everything rotate… Here is the abstract RIM provided:

BlackBerry Curve 9380 Codename Orlando Captured on Camera Again Posted: 13 Sep 2011 01:38 PM PDT The BlackBerry Curve 9380 is no stranger to us but its nice to see it getting another photo shoot thanks to the BoyGenius. They scored some time with the device which seems like a lower end BlackBerry Torch 9850. Like its cousin, the Curve 9360, this device is sporting an 800Mhz Marvell processor along with NFC, 5MP camera, 720p video recording, 1GB storage, & 512MB of RAM. This photo shoot actually has the Curve 9380 sitting right next to a prerelease BlackBerry Torch 9850 which is nice to see though it does not have the raised buttons of the production model. It is said to be releasing in the next few months. More pictures below: If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Sprint Memo Says BlackBerry 7 Wi-Fi Hotspot Feature Coming in Q4 Posted: 13 Sep 2011 09:42 AM PDT RIM has been very hush about the Wi-Fi Hotspot feature that is supposedly baked into BlackBerry 7 devices. They have specifically made no mention of it publicly though we know that earlier builds of OS 7 had it. We have seen quite a few leaks pointing to the feature coming in a future software update. Now we have a leaked memo from Sprint (via CrackBerry) which was sent to their employees to explain why the BlackBerry Torch 9850 says "Hotspot Capable" on the box. They confirm in the memo that employees should tell customers that the Wi-Fi hotspot feature is coming in the fourth quarter of this year. That means anywhere from a few weeks to less than 4 months. Anybody want to take a guess at how much carriers are going to try and jack us for a "BlackBerry Hotspot" add-on to our data plans? I hear AT&T wants a bazillion dollars… If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Citrix Receiver Comes to the BlackBerry PlayBook Posted: 13 Sep 2011 09:10 AM PDT The Professional BlackBerry PlayBook just got a bit more professional today. RIM let us know that Citrix has released a beta of Citrix Receiver for the BlackBerry PlayBook. This means PlayBook users can now access virtual Citrix desktops and applications through the PlayBook. While I know many regular users are looking for a solid remote desktop app the Citrix Receiver app for the PlayBook offers enterprise users:
That means employees using Citrix can use the Receiver to do anything they would from their desktop. I kind of wish I had a Citrix setup of my own now… Until then you can check out the feature details on the official BlackBerry Business blog. If you are a Citrix user you can download the Citrix Receiver in the App World Test Center here PS: Anybody else think it is odd to see a screenshot of Internet Explorer running on the PlayBook? Jawbone Era; prettier, quieter and a whole lot more Posted: 13 Sep 2011 07:30 AM PDT The Jawbone Era is a solid update to an innovative product. The Era brings incremental but welcome updates to its core technology (e.g. noise-cancellation technology has been upgraded to Noise Assassin 3), updates to its existing Jawbone features list (e.g. streaming audio is now in HD, motion based controls), and a flashier exterior (e.g. the multi-layered front panel). Although not groundbreaking in themselves, the updates are enough to keep Jawbone Era ahead of the pack and a my headset of choice. The Era brings quite a few updates, but only two really stand out–better noise cancellation and the updated casing. Noise Cancellation: For those unfamiliar with Jawbone, the company is famous for it’s unique approach to noise cancellation. By comparing the acoustic vibrations in the human jawbone with the sound coming into the microphone, the headset is able to isolate the speaker’s voice and fade out background noise. The Jawbone Era incorporates the third generation of that technology (called Noise Assassin). In testing, the update performed better on the streets of New York than prior models, drowning out jackhammers, cars and chatter. But most impressive was the Era’s performance on my bicycle, eliminating almost all wind interference and making this the first headset I could really use while cycling (now one less excuse to call mom). Casing: The Era has a multi-layered faceplate–a deep colored plastic layer (deep wine red in my case) topped by a black cutout plastic layer–that gives the headset a refined high-end look. The colors are deep and often shadowed by the top layer, making the use of color subtle–a deep sparkle that dances over the faceplate when exposed to light. Power management: Two old features that I am happy are sticking around relate to power management. One of the most frustrating things about using a Bluetooth headset is running out of power unexpectedly. The Era let’s you keep track of your remaining battery power in two ways–an on-screen power icon in your device’s status bar and an audio update when you hit the function button (e.g. “About 3 hours of talk-time remaining”). Note: While the on-screen power meter is automatic on an iPhone, getting it to work on your Blackberry is an annoying process that I honestly could not complete. But as a tip, start here. New features I am less excited about:
Summary: The primary purpose of a bluetooth headset it to be heard, and the Era is simply the best at that. At $89.99 on Amazon, I wouldn’t expect many to ditch their current headset and clamor for the Era’s upgrades. But for anyone in the market for a new Bluetooth headset, the Era is clearly a leader in a crowded field. Disclaimer: A demo unit was sent for this review.
