Slacker Update

Slacker has updated their popular BlackBerry smartphone app to v4.1.65. For some reason they are only pushing this update out through App World right now and it is not available directly from www.slacker.com. I have been having some caching issues in the previous release so I am glad they are working on fixing that.

Here are the fixes in v4.1.65 according to App World (Thanks Paul!)

  • Fixed playback issues for certain cached tracks
  • Fixed playback issues that could occur for some playlists

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 06:36 AM PST

SimpleVNC

The developers of the popular Simple Browser for the PlayBook, Forward Thinking Apps, has just released their first version of SimpleVNC for the PlayBook. This new app is a VNC client that allows you to control your computer remotely using VNC. Their description says that SimpleVNC is currently in rapid development and "will be changing greatly over the next 60 days" which is promising.

I have not had a chance to try it myself due to some PC issues but if you have been looking for a VNC solution you may want to check out SimpleVNC free in App World.

Planned features for future releases include:

  • Ability to have multiple connections at once.
  • Store multiple VNC connection profiles.
  • Full Mac OSX support.
  • Full Bluetooth mouse and keyboard support.

Unity Brings Super Crossfire Shooter Game to the PlayBook

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 05:54 AM PST

super_crossfire_web

Unity has put out another one of the popular games built on their gaming engine to the PlayBook. The latest is called Super Crossfire from Radian Games. They dub it an "intense shooter with a unique twist." Its like the classic arcade shooter games of yesteryear with the twist being the ability to warp between the top and bottom of the screen. There are loads of upgrades to be had for your ship and tons of enemies to blast away.

You can find Super Crossfire in App World for $4.99. You can get an idea of the gameplay from their iOS trailer:

Opera Mini lands in the BlackBerry App World
Opera and BlackBerry: Faster, cheaper, easier

Oslo, Norway – March 7, 2012 – The Opera Mini browser has now added another stamp to its passport and cleared BlackBerry customs by arriving in the BlackBerry App World.
BlackBerry users can go directly to App World and download the Opera Mini 6.5 browser.
Although just landing this week in the easily accessible BlackBerry App World, the world’s most used mobile browser, Opera Mini, is big on the ‘Berry. By downloading it manually from m.opera.com, BlackBerry users have been saving data and money on their BlackBerries for years. Now, it’s even easier to download via App World.
More than 160 million people have discovered how the Opera Mini browser can spice up their mobile web experience. Not only does Opera Mini deliver the Web faster to your phone, it also displays the page just as it looks in your desktop browser.
Opera Mini’s zoom gracefully dives into the content for easy reading and interaction. Opera Mini provides a smooth browsing experience and great social sharing capabilities.
All that, and data savings too! By using Opera technology, the Opera Mini browser only needs to transport ten percent of the data to your phone — a lifesaver while traveling, struggling with crowded networks, for your data cap or if you pay per megabyte downloaded.
BlackBerry users might specifically find enticing the use of hot keys that makes page-up and page-down viewing much faster.
"By adding another destination to Opera Mini’s passport, we are extending our reach," said Lars Boilesen, Chief Executive Officer, Opera Software. "As the world’s most popular browser, we want to take every opportunity for people to have access to our browsers, regardless of the device."
BlackBerry App World is available in more than 100 countries.
