BlackBerry PlayBook TIFF File Viewer Now Available

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 01:01 PM PST

Tiff Viewer

We told you last week that Jon Web from Innovatology challenged himself to create a PlayBook app in 24 hours. That app is a TIFF file viewer and it is now available. In case you are not familiar with them Tiff images are complex usually large files that can contain multiple pages inside them. They usually result from scans or faxes and tend to be in portrait mode.

Tiff Viewer 2

You can now purchase Tiff File Image Viewer for the PlayBook for $1.99 in App World. The only catch is that you have to save the file from emails and then open it through the app since the PlayBook does not yet allow developers to associate file types with their apps. (Thought that is coming soon)

DJPad MP3 DJ Lets You Mix & Scratch MP3’s on Your PlayBook

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 09:38 AM PST

 DJPad2 DJPad

I have been waiting for a good DJ app to come to the PlayBook and it looks like there is one making some steady progress. DJPad MP3 DJ by Burnsmod is a nice step in the right direction with a fast interface. From what I can tell the app originated as a WebOS app and also has an Android port. There is definitely quite a bit of improvement to go for the app but the developer Burns Modular is promising updates soon. The most impressive part is that the dev created the app without a PlayBook and is getting one soon to be able to test and clean out the bug.

If you aspire to be a DJ on the side definitely check out DJPad MP3 DJ for $2.99 in App World. You can also check out this free VL-Tone Synth app ported to the PlayBook for some nostalgic fun. Check out a video demo of the WebOS variant below to get an idea of how DJPad works:

Fonware NFCShortcuts App On Sale for $0.99 Today Only

NFCShortcuts

Fonware let us know that their very cool NFCShortcuts app is on sale today for $0.99 which is 66% off their regular $2.99 price. We have mentioned NFCShortcuts (previously NFCLauncher) before but in case you don't know the app lets you interact with NFC tags that you can cheaply purchase online and then set actions (or macros) for your device (you have to have NFC on your BlackBerry) to perform when it comes in contact with that tag. For example, you can have a tag by your front door that changes your profile to an indoor appropriate one.

Check out NFCShortcuts in App World today to get the sale or check out a demo of the app below:

RIM Shows Of BlackBerry Torch as a PlayBook Gamepad at Gaming Conference

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 08:59 AM PST

BlackBerry Gamepad Torch PlayBook

RIM is making a big show at the Game Developers Conference that they are sponsoring this year. SemiAccurate (via CB) caught a demo at the show of an app a RIM employee developed that allows him to control his PlayBook game from what looks like a BlackBerry Torch 9850 smartphone. The concept is very cool though it has been done on other platforms in a limited form. Either way I think it could be really cool if RIM extended BlackBerry Remote or gave developers an API to do it themselves and create slick integrations like this.

Hopefully we will be seeing this app actually released beyond just a proof of concept!

Updated: Dev Shows Off PlayBook Controlled Robotic Car

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 08:34 AM PST

UPDATE: Piotr from BBNews.pl tracked down more info about this project which can be found in Polish here or here. It is a Polish BlackBerry Academic project made for www.robotchallenge.org

PlayBook RObot

Over the years we have seen some pretty cool uses for BlackBerry as remote controls. RIM even had an event at one DevCon where you controlled robotic lego robots with BlackBerry Storms. Developers are already working on similar projects for the PlayBook and a few readers let us know about one that Alec Saunderspointed out on Twitter. We don't have much background on it but check it out below:

BlackBerry PlayBook Mini Keyboard Case Combo Launching March 23rd?

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 07:09 AM PST

BlackBerry Mini Keyboard BlackBerry Mini Keyboard2

We have been hearing bits and pieces about an upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook Mini Keyboard for awhile now and it looks like it might finally be coming. N4BB scored a spec sheet for the device which is similar to what we showed you before. The difference is we now have a $119 MSRP price (80 GBP and 99 Euro) along with a few more details and a picture of the case combo. TheSource in Canada is also accepting preorders for the keyboard/mouse/case combo with an expected ship date of March 23rd. That is in no way official but its fits well with what we have heard from other sources.

Anybody else waiting to pick up one of these devices? TheSource has it for a preorder special of $99 after which they say it will be going up in price to $119.

Giveaway: Clear Your Bold 99XX Homescreen with Minimo 2

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 05:55 AM PST

Looking to clear off that homescreen and really show off the resolution and homescreen real estate onyour Bold 99xx?  Well bluemax413 has made this possible.  He has spent a great deal of time making the first OS7 minimalist theme, Minimo 2.  Continue reading to see how to get your FREE copy and for another couple of screenshots.

Minimo 2 totally opens up the homescreen allowing for the custom wallpapers we all have, and giving them the space they need.  It also has hotspots.  This is the first time I have seen hotspots on a theme (it is also my first time with a BlackBerry touchscreen).  By touching different zones of the homescreen it opens up a different icon in the app menu.

You can grab your free copy for you Bold 99xx by heading to the BerryReview Store and using the coupon BRMinimo2 (limited so hurry).  Let us know what you think below in the comments.

There is also a DISCLAIMER from bluemax413:

***WARNING: DUE TO RIM’s ISSUES WITH CUSTOM THEMES AND THE RIBBON MANAGER, THE MAIN APP SCREEN IS ALWAYS WHITE. ALSO, WHEN OPENING A FOLDER, YOU CAN’T SEE THE ICONS, BUT YOU CAN SEARCH FOR THEM USING UNIVERSAL SEARCH.***

***WARNING: BECAUSE THERE ISN’T OFFICIAL SUPPORT FOR OS7 THEMES, THERE MAY BE BUGS!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!***

I have found instead of using Universal Search, I just load the stock theme, and move the items to the home application screen.  Then reload Minimo 2 and all is well.

BlackBerry PlayBook Differentiation and Apps

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 04:43 AM PST

One of the things that caught my attention when the PlayBook was first announced was how specifically RIM differentiated it from the iPad. Wish the iPad was more portable, or wish your tablet was a better form factor for using it as an e-reader? We’ll give you a 7″ tablet. Wish it had cameras? Great, we’ll give you two. Wish the iPad’s screen wasn’t so low res? We’ll give you an incredible screen that is higher resolution. Wish the iPad had rich stereo sound. Bam. Frustrated that the iPad won’t let you watch flash videos on the web? We’ll make a tablet that lives and breathes Flash. Interested in being able to browse the web on the go but annoyed by having to pay another monthly fee? We’ll let you piggy back on your phone’s data plan. Wish your tablet was built on top of the military grade security that people have come to expect from BlackBerry? You’ve got it.

Not a fan of the cold metallic back of the iPad, always nervous about scratching it when you put it down? We’ll give you a great feeling tablet with an elegant rubberized back that you don’t have to worry about scratching. Wish you could develop apps using the same language that forms the foundation of the PC (C++), allowing you to re-use existing code, well known toolsets, etc, rather than learning a whole new language (Objective C) that is incompatible with existing code and toolsets? Sure thing. Saddened by Apple’s walled garden, but not excited by the fragmentation of Android? How about a third option?

The list goes on and on.  RIM was pretty tenacious about identifying and executing on many point of differentiation.

On the app front, it’s interesting to think about what uses cases benefit from the PlayBook’s points of differentiation. That’s right down the alley of my designer and MBA student friend Graham Huber, who has collaborated with me on a couple of apps. The first app that he did, Solicit, leverages the fact that the PlayBook is easy to pass to someone and have them type in some information. The idea is to take it to trade shows, business meetings, classes, etc, and to grab people’s contact info quickly and easily. More recently, he published Vote, which allows a vote to be setup and the PlayBook to be passed around a business meeting or classroom to get a consensus on a question.

I’m curious about what apps highlight for you how to best take advantage of the PlayBook’s points of differentiation. On a related note, do you feel these points of differentiation lead to unique apps on the PlayBook platform? RIM is making headway getting the big hitting games to the PlayBook and they are working on popular apps but what has been you experience with apps unique to the PlayBook?
