Slacker Radio Updated to v4.2.4 With NCAA Live Streaming Posted: 13 Mar 2012 02:06 AM PDT Slacker Radio again pushed out an update to their popular BlackBerry smartphone app bringing us to v4.2.4. This new version brings NCAA Live Streaming Stations (Thanks TR for the tip and screencap). Also of interest is that Slacker is no longer offering their app to be downloaded direct from Slacker.com but is rather linking to App World. Past 3 Months Show Large Increase in BlackBerry PlayBook users Posted: 12 Mar 2012 01:48 PM PDT Based on data derived from monthly downloads of my free game Pixelated, I have estimated the number of PlayBooks sold each month. The graph shows the cumulative totals of these estimates. Of note is the slope of the graph over the past few months. The past three months, which correspond with RIM's most recent (and not yet reported) financial quarter show a dramatic increase in the number of PlayBooks in the wild. According to these estimates the total number of PlayBooks sold has doubled in the past three months. As of the end of November RIM had shipped 800k devices. Given how lean inventory was at that time, I think that it is possible that RIM will be able to announce 1M PlayBooks shipped over the past three months. I think that it is safe to assume that most of the increased interest is due to the PlayBook’s reduction in price to $200, although I am sure that Christmas helped as well. Free Walking Dead: Dead Reckoning Breaks Out on the PlayBook Posted: 12 Mar 2012 01:41 PM PDT AMC's The Walking Dead: Dead Reckoning first started off as a comic book series and then turned into a AMC TV show. Michelle @CrackBerry noticed that AMC has now released a PlayBook app for the Walking Dead and released it free on App World. The app sort of reminds me of those old PC games where you decided your next course of action as the story unfolds. More chapters are coming to the game though it is relatively short right now. You can also sample the Flash version of the app on the Walking Dead website though it takes much longer to load. RIM Hits 25 Million+ Global Social Media Fans Posted: 12 Mar 2012 11:56 AM PDT
If there is one thing you could say about RIM's interaction with their fans in the last few years is that they have become way more social. Two years ago you would have been shocked to see VPs and RIM employees taking part in forums and BerryReview comments. Now it has become commonplace for RIM to engage their fans where they are. That is not to say that RIM does not have more they can do but it is encouraging to see them announce passing the 25 million+ global social media fans on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, and their blogs along with other global and regional social networks. Here is how they break down globally:
If you have not already seen it I highly recommend checking out RIM's slick BlackBerry Communities page which is for North America. You can also find them on their BlackBerry Worldwide Facebook page. To give some perspective RIM also sent us a list of their social rankings from a few sources:

Open Source Platformer Frogatto Coming to the PlayBook Posted: 12 Mar 2012 09:42 AM PDT We have some more details on that game that RIM was using to show off their BlackBerry Torch D-Pad gamepad with the PlayBook. The game is a open source platformer game called Frogatto. (thanks to Pelegri @RIM for pointing it out) According to the Frogatto website they have ported the game to the PlayBook thanks to help and support from RIM. According to Sirp on the Frogatto's website:
We will be keeping an eye out for Frogatto hitting App World. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

PlayBook Telnet SSH PuTTY Port Updated With Multiple Connections Posted: 12 Mar 2012 08:55 AM PDT
We told you about the SSH Telnet PuTTy port for the PlayBook a bit back but since then it has been updated a few times. I was in need of a good SSH client over the weekend and picked up a copy of SSH Telnet for $4.99 (it used to be $1.99) in App World. SSH Telnet by Dmytro Mishchenko is essentially a port of the hugely popular PuTTy remote connection client for the PlayBook and it works quite well as a native app. It hurts to pay for PuTTy when it is open source and the payments do not go to the PuTTy project but the MIT license seems to allow it and it is supporting the developer for porting and improving it. Since we last mentioned SSH Telnet the change log has included:
My favorite is the multiple connections and connection tunneling. Check out Telnet SSH for yourself in App World for $4.99 and let me know if you have any other alternatives you prefer! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Posts Up Three More “Be Bold” Videos Posted: 12 Mar 2012 07:33 AM PDT I am not sure if I would call these 1-2 minute videos "Advertisements" but they definitely fall in line with RIM's previous "Be Bold" campaign. The latest three take us through how a cupcake business owner, doctor, and music tour promoter use their BlackBerry Bold 9900's to "turn ideas into action." I do not think these videos are part of RIM's upcoming updated ad campaigns but they still send a solid message. Check them out below:

Pencil Camera Turns Your Pictures Into Art With Six Filters Posted: 12 Mar 2012 06:42 AM PDT
Jeremy let us know about a cool new app in App World called Pencil Camera. The app by Eddy Liu is a port of his BlackBerry smartphone Pencil Camera app with what he calls "Tons of features" that are not available in the smartphone version. There are six different art filters that convert pictures you take into Standard Pencil, Chalk, Colored Pencil, Charcoal, Brushed, and Water Paper. You can then share pictures on Facebook from the app.

Files & Folders Bringing SugarSync Integration to the PlayBook Posted: 12 Mar 2012 05:32 AM PDT The popular third party PlayBook file manager, Files & Folders, has had integration with third party services like Box and DropBox added and now they are working on SugarSync. This is a huge deal for me since I find that SugarSync is way better served for my purposes than DropBox and others. Luis pointed out to me that Files & Folders confirmed on March 2nd that SugarSync integration was coming soon and over this past weekend said the integration works. They are currently performing "final tests, then minor OS2 quirk fixing and performance tuning." Can't wait for this to launch! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
