RIM Gets Patent for Adjusting Volume Based on a Touch Sensor Posted: 28 Mar 2012 01:59 AM PDT
RIM just received a patent for yet another filing they made back in November of 2007. This patent which has been 5 years in the patent approval process essentially modulates the volume on your smartphone based on how close your ear is to the speaker. That means it would have at least one touch sensor but probably more and based on how good of a seal your phone has in your ear it will adjust the volume. It can also remember the history of previous seals so it learns your usage patterns. Its a very cool idea for a phone and definitely fits in with RIM's engineering history like the magnetic holsters, light sensors, and trackpads. Kudos to the Engadget team for spotting this on the USPTO website. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Delays Annual Analyst Meeting Until After BlackBerry 10 Launch Posted: 27 Mar 2012 03:18 PM PDT
RIM has been holding an annual Capital Markets Day for analysts and large investors for awhile now. It has always oddly been part of BlackBerry World (Previously WES) but now RIM seems to be changing it up. They told Reuters that:
Personally I think that is the right move since you cannot truly talk about RIM's future until we see BlackBerry 10. What do you think? If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Releases Free TunnelTilt WebGL PlayBook Game Demo in App World Posted: 27 Mar 2012 12:55 PM PDT
When RIM first showed off TunnelTilt to demo WebGL in the PlayBook OS 2.0 browser I was impressed. WebGL allows web developers to create graphically intensive and beautiful games in the browser. Now RIM is exemplifying the fact that you can take these browser games and turn them into native apps using WebWorks on the PlayBook with the game feeling like a native game. TunnelTilt is a demo game that RIM opensourced awhile ago and I am surprised it took them so long to get into App World. At least now RIM has corrected that and released TunnelTilt free in App World. Let us know what you think! PS: Anybody else think that RIM needs to create a "platformer" game like BrickBreaker for the PlayBook OS and BlackBerry 10? Patent Troll Sues RIM, Apple, Samsung, HTC, & Sony Posted: 27 Mar 2012 11:39 AM PDT
The patent trolls are still banging their chests. The latest to come out from under the bridge is Graphics Properties which used to be called Silicon Graphics which filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and is now owed by private investment firms after selling their operations. Reuters is reporting that Graphics Properties is suing RIM along with Apple, HTC, Sony, and Samsung over a single patent in Wilmington, Delaware. Here is how they describe it:
I have not managed to find the actual patent filing but it sounds like they may have a patent on using a screen… They also are only suing RIM for damages caused by the patents use in the BlackBerry Torch line which is odd. Let us know if you find the patent! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Cut the Thread Game Mimics “Cut the Rope” Gameplay for BlackBerry Smartphones Posted: 27 Mar 2012 08:36 AM PDT
The fun physics game Cut the Rope has been brought to the BlackBerry PlayBook but BlackBerry smartphone users are still left wanting. SolverLabs has decided to step in a fill in the gap with Cut the Thread for BlackBerry smartphones. The game is really fun and runs quite well. The only real catch is that it is only available for OS 6.0+ BlackBerrys with touchscreens. That essentially means the Torch and Bold models. Check out Cut the Thread in App World for $0.99. RIM VP Promises To Give Vision for the Future at BlackBerry World 2012 Posted: 27 Mar 2012 07:52 AM PDT
This was more or less a given already from what RIM has said publicly but its nice to see it confirmed again. RIM has shared a video invitation from Rory O'Neill, VP of Product Marketing at RIM, saying what you can expect to hear at BlackBerry World 2012. More or less Rory promises that:

LocalBar 2 Allows You To Sideload Apps to Your PlayBook Without a PC Posted: 27 Mar 2012 06:33 AM PDT
Yohanes Nugroho is at it again with a new version of his original LocalBar app. The new LocalBar app gets around RIM's block of the original LocalBar app method by using a proxy to fool the PlayBook into thinking an app is being sideloaded from a PC. Yohanes has provided a proxy that you can run on your BlackBerry smartphone on the same network but you should also be able to do it with any proxy software on your desktop (tinyproxy, etc), router, or other smartphone like Android (Proxoid) devices. I really wish RIM would just allow direct app downloads on the PlayBook but they seem adamant on maintaining strict control of app delivery. Until then I highly recommend checking out Yohanes's new LocalBar 2 app. You will still have to sideload the LocalBar 2 app the regular way using a tool like DDPB or directly. The irony is that you can also use the LocalBar 2 app to sideload apps from one PlayBook to another without a proxy but not from one PlayBook to itself without using a proxy. Check out LocalBar2 directly from Yohanes here and let us know if it works for you! Make sure to download the LocalBarProxy app to your BlackBerry from the same page if you want to use your BlackBerry as a proxy. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus Bumps Up to v3.0 on the PlayBook Posted: 27 Mar 2012 04:26 AM PDT Gameloft (or RIM) has updated the popular (and currently free) Modern Combat 2 Black Pegasus HD to v3.0 from the previous v2.0. That is a big bump but the download size seems to be the same. Hopefully they fixed the really annoying bug on one of the levels where the walls and my character float to the ceiling.
