SecuStore PlayBook Password Manager With Dropbox Backup

Posted: 29 Mar 2012 02:34 AM PDT

SecuStore SecuStore2

SecuStore is an interesting new password manager for the PlayBook built on WebWorks. It started as a WebOS app and now is available on the PlayBook, iOS, and Google Chrome. It allows you to generate passwords and encrypt them while using Dropbox to sync the passwords between the different devices. Even more interesting is that the developer, Martin Kleinschrodt, wrote his own community extension to WebWorks to give access to the clipboard in PlayBook OS 2.0 and submitted it to the WebWorks Community APIs GitHub repository. Kudos to Pelegri @RIM for pointing that one out!

Check out SecuStore in App World for $5.99 along with the Google Chrome extension for your desktop.

Vectir Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Remote Control Apps Get Updated

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 02:50 PM PDT

Vectir Vectir2

We mentioned Vectir a bit back as a very powerful remote control app for your PC. It allows you to control your media players like VLC, Winamp, iTunes, and more from your BlackBerry smartphone with ease. They have a client that works over Bluetooth and another that works over Wi-Fi so you are covered both ways. You can also add your own custom remote macros for other apps which is a big perk.

The Vectir app has a nice 30 day trial after which you can pick up a copy of the app for $14.95. (currently $4.95 in a limited sale). It works with quite a few devices and the app just got a nice update for both variants this month.

Check out the solution at www.vectir.com or find the Bluetooth variant or Wi-Fi variant in App World

Official OS 7.1.0.342 for the BlackBerry Bold 9900 from Cellcom Israel

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 01:03 PM PDT

We all had fun last week loading this leak on to our 9900s, whether it was from the old fashion hybrid install, or using @lyricidal’s installer then BBHTool.  If you didn’t go for the manual install, it is now officially released for everyone to enjoy. Continue after the break for the link!

You can get it directly from RIM via the CellCom Software Page.  Just select Bold 9900 and click next.  Dont forget to delete the vendor.xml’s!

Stuff File Manager for the PlayBook With DropBox Support

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 08:05 AM PDT

Stuff

We mentioned Files & Folders adding SugarSync support earlier in the week and one of our readers, Jnorth, pointed out that there is a similar app called Stuff. Stuff is a easy to use file manager for the PlayBook that also adds access to your DropBox account. It has been around for awhile now but does not seem to have caught on for some reason.

Stuff2 Stuff3

Features include:

  • Cut, copy and paste files and folders just like on your PC and Mac
  • Open and edit files in the BlackBerry PlayBook native applications like Docs to Go® and Adobe Reader
  • Search and sort through any folder
  • Rename and delete files and folders
  • Create and open compressed ZIP archives
  • Create favorites for any file or folder
  • Preview photos and images
  • Create new folders
  • Supports both portrait and landscape orientations

You can find a free trial of Stuff in App World with the full version going for $2.99 or find more info on their website.

RIM Explains How They “Manage BlackBerry Jailbreak Issues”

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 07:55 AM PDT

PlayBook-deconstructed

RIM has had some of its stellar security record tarnished when the BlackBerry PlayBook was jailbroken. The current versions of the OS have been holding up but users are still downgrading to gain root access. RIM's usually VERY quiet and media shy BlackBerry Security Incident Response Team (BBSIRT) has actually spoken out on the BlackBerry Business blog about PlayBook Jailbreaking. Adrian Stone, RIM's Director of the BBSIRT, wrote up a whole post about how RIM responds to jailbreak related reports.

Adrian rightly points out that there are two angles when it comes to jailbreaking with one requiring multiple changes by an authorized user to lower security settings and another more serious one where remote users can take over your device. Think of it as the difference between the current complex Dingleberry jailbreak compared to a Flash vulnerability exploit that can be done by any website.

RIM obviously recommends against jailbreaking but if you are interested in BlackBerry security check out Adrian’s post here.

BlackBerry Bridge Gets Tiny Update to v2.0.0.26

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 06:21 AM PDT

Bridge Update

Usually a BlackBerry Bridge update is a sign of an upcoming update to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS but I am not sure this time. RIM has updated the BlackBerry Bridge app in App World to v2.0.0.26 from the previous v2.0.0.25. That is just a tiny jump that probably just resolves a few bugs. Either way you can pick up the update directly from App World. Let us know if you spot anything!

Thanks to scuebydue for the screencap!

Sketch W Friends Multiplayer Pictionary Game Gets Free Trial

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 05:12 AM PDT

Sketch with Friends Sketch with Friends3

We mentioned Sketch W Friends earlier in the month as a cross platform mix between Pictionary and Charades for the PlayBook, iOS, and Android. The game is pretty cool but the one main downside was that there was no free trial for the $1.99 game. Now Xlabz has corrected that by releasing a free trial version of Sketch W Friends that allows you to play 2 or 3 games a day.

Check out Sketch With Friends in App World for $1.99 or and the free trial available here.
