Free Opera Mini Browser Updated to v6.5 for BlackBerry

Posted: 03 Nov 2011 02:16 AM PDT

Opera Mini

Opera gave their Opera Mini browser for BlackBerry a small update this week. The new update to v6.5 brings some of the features that Opera introduced to other devices recently. This new version adds a new Data Usage view that shows you how much you have saved by using Opera on your phone. They have also added a star button in the URL field to save the website as a bookmark.

You can pick up the latest version at http://m.opera.com/

Union Releases Downhill Bowling 2 and Dog Pile Games for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Downhill bowling 2 Downhill bowling 2 2

The Unity 3D engine has brought two more games to the BlackBerry PlayBook through Union. The latest is Downhill Bowling 2 along with Dog Pile. Downhill Bowling 2 comes from Game Resort and offers some pretty fun bowling action in multiple "worlds" with unlockable goodies. Dog Pile on the other hand is a physics puzzle game from Josh O'Clock where you have to avoid hazards and traps on the way down the the dog pile.

Both games look great on my friends PlayBook but sadly do not support the PlayBook OS 2.0 beta (I don't think any Unity games do yet). They are also both priced at a rock bottom $0.99 each! Check them out below:

Updated: RIM Deletes Mention of Removing App World From PlayBook OS 2.0 Developer Beta

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 08:39 AM PDT

Update: RIM let us know that their note in their blog post this morning that said App World not being included in this version of the PlayBook OS 2.0 developer build “was a typo that has since been removed.”  Hopefully that means RIM is not even considering it anymore. Now I can finally download the update and check for myself.

Information Overload

That was quick! We told you earlier today that RIM posted up a new version of the PlayBook OS 2.0 Beta with a huge disclaimer. It specifically said that they had removed App World from the development beta. Now just a few hours later that text has been removed from RIM's announcement and updaters are reporting that they are getting App World. Specifically RIM's old blog post said (from Google Cache):

Please note that this build is strictly designed for developers and is NOT a build designed for consumer use, since some apps built for BlackBerry PlayBook OS v.1.0.7 may not work correctly. As such, we have removed the BlackBerry App World™ storefront from this developer build (you can still "side load" your applications for testing). If you've downloaded and installed this build by accident, or if you'd like to return your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to its previous state, check out our guide to downgrading on the Inside BlackBerry Help Blog.

While the updated announcement now reads:

Please note that this build is strictly designed for developers and is NOT a build designed for consumer use, since some apps built for BlackBerry PlayBook OS v.1.0.7 may not work correctly. If you've downloaded and installed this build by accident, or if you'd like to return your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to its previous state, check out our guide to downgrading on the Inside BlackBerry Help Blog.

Notice the retraction? Hopefully that means that RIM has realized how big of a colossal screw up it would be to remove App World from development builds. If anything they could simply not allow users of Dev Builds to leave reviews on apps in App World. What do you think?

Addictive “Grave Defense HD” Tower Defense Game for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 07:47 AM PDT

Grave Defense Grave Defense4 Grave Defense7

The BlackBerry PlayBook just received another slick game today courtesy of Marmalade and their self named SDK. We told you that Grave Defense was coming and now it is available for all. I have been looking for a solid tower defense style game for my PlayBook and this really seems to hit the spot. You have to fight back the zombie hordes through 20 levels with classic baddies like Dracula and Frankenstein.

All in all Grave Defense HD is a slick BlackBerry PlayBook game for only $2.99. Check out a video trailer of the game below:

Updated: BlackBerry PlayBook OS v2.0.0.3894 Developer Beta Available – App World Removed!

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 07:11 AM PDT

Update: RIM let us know that their note in their blog post this morning that said App World not being included in this version of the PlayBook OS 2.0 developer build ”was a typo that has since been removed.”  Hopefully that means RIM is not even considering it anymore. Now I can finally download the update and check for myself.

Thumbs-down

RIM has rolled out an update to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 Developer Beta bringing it to v2.0.0.3894. This is not the regular consumer build and to ensure that RIM has taken the DRASTIC measure of removing App World from the developer build in this update. That means you can only sideload applications for testing. The problem is that RIM has essentially turned the developer build from something you could more or less still use regularly and test on to a device that is for development only. There is a reason other OS development builds of upcoming OS releases like Windows, iOS, etc DO NOT DO THIS! It pisses developers off!

Either way if you want to update to this new developer build you will get updates that include two development improvements including:

  • BlackBerry WebWorks applications can now successfully call GPS
  • Wi-Fi® profiles are now saved and no longer disappear during tablet reboots

I really hope RIM reconsiders this mistakenly altruistic idiotic approach of removing App World. Make sure to let them know on the BlackBerry Dev Blog. I for one will not be upgrading but let us know if there is anything new if you do.

BBM Music Comes Out of Beta in US, Canada, & Australia With Free Extended 60 Day Trial

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 06:53 AM PDT

 BBM Music

That was relatively quick for RIM. RIM just let us know that BBM Music is now out of beta and will be available in App World starting later today at this link. The music catalog including millions of songs from Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, EMI, IODA: Independent Online Distribution Alliance, VidZone Digital Media and The Orchard and you select 50 of them to call your own. You then also share those songs with all your friends on BBM and you get access to their 50 favorite songs. You can use the BBM Music app for free after the 30 day (extended to 60 days for a limited time) free trial but for the full experience listening to full music tracks you need to pay $4.99/month otherwise you only get 30 second previews of songs.

BBM Music2

Check out a video demo of the app below:

Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video Link

In essence RIM is trying to setup BBM Music as a way for you to connect with your friends around music. With all of your friends collections you can have up to 1300 songs in your BBM Music profile that change as your friends modify them. With my beta of BBM Music I have seen this translate into you essentially having the latest hits along with classics on your BlackBerry with very little fluff. The main question is how many people will remain subscribed after the free trial period for you to keep those songs.

Either way you can read more about the service below or on RIM's blog or pick it up in App World.

The BBM Music app is out of beta and will be available beginning later today* for BlackBerry® smartphone users** to download from BlackBerry App World. BBM Music is a BBM-connected music service that enables viral music discovery and social interaction, allowing music fans to connect on a whole new level.

BBM Music is a cloud-based service that allows users to enjoy an evolving, community-based music library together with their BBM Music friends. The size of a user's music library continues to grow as they invite friends to join their community. Each user can select music from a catalog of millions of songs from Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, EMI, IODA: Independent Online Distribution Alliance, VidZone Digital Media and The Orchard.

Here's how it works:

  • Download  BBM Music from BlackBerry App World, and select 50 songs that will automatically be shared with your BBM Music friends
  • The songs that your friends select (as well as the songs you selected) become part of your BBM Music library, thereby significantly increasing the number of songs you can listen to. For example: if you have 25 BBM Music friends, and each has 50 songs, your library could increase to 1,300 songs!
  • You can create music playlists comprised of any number of songs from your BBM Music library
  • Easily discover music that your BBM Music friends are listening to, and comment on your friends' songs and playlists
  • Songs can be cached, so you can listen to music even when out of wireless coverage, such as when you are on the subway oron a flight
  • Each month, you can swap out up to half of the 50 songs you personally selected to explore new music

Availability:

BBM Music will be available beginning later today on BlackBerry App World in Canada and the United States, with additional regions launching shortly.

Free Trial and Subscription:

The innovative BBM Music service is available for a monthly subscription of $4.99 USD, with a 30 day 'try before you buy' offer***.  For a limited time, and on a first-come first-served basis, RIM is extending the free trial offer to a period of 60 days***, so download BBM Music today!

Quick Links:

* May take up to 24 hrs. to appear in the BlackBerry App World catalog.

** Application requirements:

  • BlackBerry® OS 5 or higher
  • BBM 6.0 or higher
  • User must have access to BlackBerry App World
  • SD card is recommended for caching songs

*** New BBM Music users only.  May not be combined with other offers. Payment information required to receive full trial period.   Following trial user placed into automatically renewing monthly subscription plan unless cancelled before end of trial period.  Limited time introductory offer may vary by BlackBerry device or carrier.  Additional charges may apply.  Subject to change.  See www.blackberry.com/bbmmusic for complete details and restrictions.

Extreme Tux Racer Game Brings the Linux Mascot to the PlayBook

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 06:50 AM PDT

Drodin has ported the classic Linux game, Extreme Tux Racer, to the PlayBook. The game is open source but they are charging $1.99 for it in App World. Either way the classic Linux game is quite fun on the PlayBook even in beta form. This game should give you an idea of what we will see in terms of the Native SDK allowing OpenGL games to easily come to the PlayBook and BBX OS.

You can pick up Extreme Tux Racer in App World for $1.99

I am always on the hunt for free games and the latest I spotted is Angry Worm for BlackBerry. The game seems like an updated version of the classic Snake game with you moving the snake in every direction to collect green leaves and apples. You can even teleport and pick up invincibility stars. There are four different speeds and ten levels to play.
