AT&T Official OS7.0.0.440 for the Torch 9860

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 02:11 AM PST

It didn’t take AT&T long to put the official OS’s for the 9860 on the BlackBerry software page.  They were kind enough to use an All Language and a Multi Language release.  This should help everyone get the languages the want!  You can find them through these link, All LanguagesMulti Language.

Analyst Says QNX Phones Only Coming in Q2

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 01:14 PM PST

BBX-next-exit

You have to love analysts! The latest spotted by AllThingsD is Jeff Kvall of Barclays Capital. He just downgraded RIM's stock from $40 to $23 because RIM's products including QNX phones are seeing continued delays. They have him quoted:

"We believe QNX smartphones are delayed beyond management's last public statements of a 1Q12 release," says Kvaal. "RIM's preference to hold the launch until fully ready is the correct decision in our view, though it does imply that management is anticipating delays in the launch. The company has recently shied away from any reaffirmation of the timeline and have had several public forums to do so. … Putting this aside, our math on carrier certification timelines which require at least six months in the US suggests a late 1Q12 launch at best. … However, we believe technical challenges are high as we have seen with the delay of Playbook 2.0, and we therefore consider a mid-year launch more likely and our checks across the distribution channel support this view."

I have heard a similar rumor that since RIM turned the Colt into a dev only device they are working on a Q2 2012 launch for QNX BBX phones with all of the features carriers want. The thing is even Kvaal admits that its the right decision for RIM to wait until the device is fully ready. RIM was even giving the same Q2 2012 on the side at DevCon though I don't remember it being said officially.

The PlayBook is set to get its OS update before BBX but I know I am waiting for the BBX phones! Hopefully RIM manages to spin on a dime and bring it back into Q1 2012. I want a BBX phone in my hands before BlackBerry World!

A couple readers let us know that AT&T has put up their latest commercial for the BlackBerry Torch 9810. Nothing yet for the Bold 9900 or Torch 9860 but this commercial actually makes you laugh. Definitely one of the better BlackBerry commercials over the years. Check it out and let us know what you think!

Quick Tip: Search for Apps in App World Using Their Product ID

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 08:01 AM PST

App World Search by ID

This little trick has been around for awhile now but I don't think we have ever mentioned it on BerryReview. RIM has hidden a little popup in App World that lets you search for an app, game, or theme by using its product ID. You can find an apps product ID easily since it is the number at the end of the URL for each app in App World. For example, the App ID for Facebook for BlackBerry is 680 which you can easily see in the URL for it in App World.

To easily search by an ID in App World you simply hold down the ALT key while pressing the letters STST. That will popup the dialog you see above where you can enter in the ID. This is useful for multiple things like finding apps that are not compatible with your device or apps that have not cleared all the App World cache due to just being released.

Let us know if the shortcut works for you and what you use it for!

Thrutu Lets You Share Location, Photos, & More While on the Phone

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 06:50 AM PST

 Thrutu Thrutu2

Thrutu came out for BlackBerry during DevCon but I did not have a chance to play with it until now. The app tries to solve a simple problem of sharing information while you are on a call. For example, say you want to send somebody a contact or a picture while on the phone. Or simply give them your location when you are not sure where you are. That is where Thrutu comes in.

Thrutu3 Thrutu4

With Thrutu you can share your:

  • Location: callers can see each other's position on a map, updating live as they move.
  • Camera: snap and share a photo during a call
  • Gallery: select and share a photo from those already stored on the phone.
  • Contacts: share contact details that will appear instantly in the other caller's address book.
  • Prod: for the first time, you can convey touch in a phone call! Playfully poke the other person by causing their phone to vibrate during the call.

The "prod" sort of creeps me out but I can see a use for the app especially since it is available on Android and iOS for cross platform uses. On the other hand I usually simply send the same information over email so this really just simplifies it a tad. You can check out Thrutu at thrutu.com or simply pick it up free in App World.

Check out their Android and iPhone demo below for an idea of how the app works:

Do You Have a Nickname for Your BlackBerry?

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 05:39 AM PST

BlackBerry Nicknames

This is one that has changed for me over the years. I used to have some interesting nicknames for my BlackBerry over the years ranging bbetty to HAL but haven't really thought about it for awhile. RIM's @BlackBerryHelp squad reminded me by throwing out the question on Twitter and then posting some of the favorites in the image above on their blog.

So I thought I would throw it out to all of you. What do you call your BlackBerry?

PS: Funniest one I have heard over the years was Sancho or Sancha…
