Have a Wonderful Thanksgiving!

Turkey Haters Gonna Hate

Its hard to believe that Thanksgiving is tomorrow. To those of you celebrating with us in the US we wanted to wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving from the whole BerryReview Team. For those of you outside the US we hope you can join in a bit of the celebration. We wanted to thank you all for making BerryReview feel like an extended family and community. Hopefully RIM has some nice presents for us this holiday season into early 2012!

Kevin @CrackBerry sent me a bit of holiday cheer yesterday with a lyrical classic he rhymed up with some help from Ryan. Their CrackBerry Jingle Bells may help set the holiday mood for RIM:

Dashing through the snow
In a BlackBerry 7 sleigh
O’er the BES they go
encrypted all the way
3 Bells on phone calls ring
Make my led bright
What fun it is to email, ping
And tweet 'til late at night

Oh, jingle bells, Android smells
webOS go away
iPhone Yuck and Windows Phones suck
BlackBerry all the way, hey!

RIM Talks Up “The Power of Tap” With NFC and BlackBerry Tag

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 02:14 PM PST

verizon-bold-9930-nfc

I have been very interested in hearing and seeing more from RIM with their NFC implementations. It was disappointing that the two new BlackBerry Torch models do not have NFC but all of the new models in the Bold and Curve lines have it. RIM has given us a bit of a taste of what NFC, which they are calling BlackBerry Tag, will mean to end users. First they told us about URL's, then payments with MasterCard, and how they will open doors. They even gave us a taste of how it will let you tap to share multimedia or adding BBM contacts.

RIM just sent an email to their enterprise edge email subscribers titled "The Power of Tap". It gives a few clear ideas of what RIM has in store for NFC:

  • Transfer files within the Files application
  • Share a URL from the browser
  • Share photos and videos from the media applications
  • Share voice notes
  • Share Documents To Go® documents

Personally I am pretty excited about NFC. I have a dream that I will be able to unlock my apartment door and login to my computer using NFC. I am sure that is still a bit off but would't it be cool? Or say you could connect to a Wi-Fi network by tapping your phone against the router…

Check out what RIM sent out below:

The Power of the Tap

This summer, Research in Motion® (RIM®) announced the release of five new BlackBerry® smartphones based on the BlackBerry® 7 Operating System (OS). Particularly exciting is the release of the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900 smartphone and BlackBerry® Bold™ 9930 smartphone, which are the first BlackBerry smartphones to include built-in support for Near Field Communications (NFC). RIM combined NFC technology with BlackBerry Tag, introducing users to the power of tapping and opening up a world of many new and exciting capabilities.

Soon you will be able to tap your BlackBerry smartphone to:

  • Transfer files within the Files application
  • Share a URL from the browser
  • Share photos and videos from the media applications
  • Share voice notes
  • Share Documents To Go® documents

BlackBerry smartphones and MasterCard

Recently, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry® Curve™ 9360 became the world's first SIM-based smartphones to receive MasterCard® PayPass™ handset certification. The certification was granted because BlackBerry smartphones meet the functionality, interoperability and security requirements of MasterCard. With more and more retailers and advertisers using NFC technology, this new flexibility and mobility will create an entirely new and increasingly unique shopping experience.

Is it secure?

At RIM, we always pair new mobility solutions with protection. When NFC technology merged with BlackBerry devices, we made sure that we did not sacrifice security. RIM developed a number of ways to keep your BlackBerry smartphone and your accounts safe and secure, including:

By default, prompting for user confirmation when a user attempts to send or receive payment information using BlackBerry Tag (can be disabled by the user or managed through a security policy)

Disabling tapping to prevent unwanted tagging from pockets or lost or stolen devices

Using AES-256 encrypted transport protocol over Bluetooth® to share data

Learn more about BlackBerry smartphones' NFC capabilities here and about how BlackBerry smartphones have been recognized by MasterCard here.

Engineers boosts battery strength & recharging speed

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 01:55 PM PST

Weird as it sounds, but it seems like the engineers at Northwestern University in the US have managed to not only increase the charge of the battery, but also increase its efficiency!

One change involves poking millions of minuscule holes in the battery.

A mobile phone battery built using the Northwestern techniques would charge from flat in 15 minutes and last a week before needing a recharge.

Dr Harold Kung and his team at Northwestern said they have found a way to cram more of the ions in and to speed up their movement by altering the materials used to manufacture a battery.

The maximum charge has been boosted by replacing sheets of silicon with tiny clusters of the substance to increase the amount of lithium ions a battery can hold on to.

The recharging speed has been accelerated using a chemical oxidation process which drills small holes – just 20-40 nanometers wide – in the atom-thick sheets of graphene that batteries are made of.

“Even after 150 charges, which would be one year or more of operation, the battery is still five times more effective than lithium-ion batteries on the market today,” said lead scientist Prof Harold Kung from the chemical and biological engineering department at Northwestern.

Now, if we do that to our BlackBerry J-M1 batteries and get our bold running for a week, would that not be great?

When is Enough Enough? The BlackBerry 7 “White Screen of Death”

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 01:01 PM PST

With every up, there is a down.  It is just how life works.  Not everything you love is perfect, and that poses the question of when does one out weigh the other? The issue I seem to be having is JVM errors and White Screen of Deaths! (WSD).

There has been a lot of buzz going around about dead 99xx  devices.  People having them completely bricked when they wake up.  Others are experiencing WSD’s on a re-occurring basis. I have experienced this with different errors and multiple devices which rules out hardware issues.  Me, personally have now had 6 JVM errors between 2 devices in 3 months.  To me, that is uncalled for, and is becoming quite frustrating.  I never thought I would carry 2 devices on me, just to use one as a back up in case one all of a sudden dies, but wish I did last weekend.  That is when JVM 512 pushed me over the edge.

I was on vacation in Boston with my Fiancee and we were having a great time, she decided to leave her 9700 (she wont upgrade after seeing all my issues) at home so she wouldn’t roam and get extra charges. Between the two of us, we really only need one phone.

First night we are there, it WSD’s me, a truly annoying occurrence.  I had my laptop, but not a cable on me.  I calmly went down to the front desk and explained what I needed to the clerk, and she let me go through lost and found, an Android charger was there, and that would suffice.  A hour later, im up and running, had to incur $22 in roaming data charges because it wouldn’t register email over wifi.

I am at my tipping point after last night, 9 days later, its error-ed out again.  My latest back up on my work computer, had to wait until the morning to wipe and reload my OS and restore my info.  I do not want to leave BlackBerry and their works, as I am a loyal FanBoi…. but with these issues keep happening like any other unsatisfied customer I will have to find a solution that works for me.

It saddens me that under the pressure that they are facing to succeed and over come the adversity pounded on them by other platforms and analysts…. they are crumbling.

So it is fair to ask, when is enough ENOUGH?  When can a loyal user be pushed over the limit and forced to go to a device he/she does not want to use, but has to for stability and reliability?

Have you experienced any of these? Come across a lot of frustration with 0s 7 devices? I am really hoping there is some sort of software fix RIM will push out to fix these constant JVM errors.

SoundID SIX Bluetooth Headset Released with EarPrint 3.0 Application

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 10:35 AM PST

SoundID SIX SoundID EarPrint App

Last year Luis reviewed the SoundID 510 which shipped along with a EarPrint app that gave you added functionality from your BlackBerry. They have now released a new version of their headset called the SoundID SIX bluetooth headset that comes with EarPrint 3.0. As far as I can tell the EarPrint app in App World was updated last month but going by the reviews I hope it improves.

The new SoundID SIX headset offers:

  • VoiceMenu, an improvement on voice recognition, allows you to discretely activate up to 5 features, such as voicemail, VoiceDial and BING 411– all with one command and regardless of background noise.
  • Voice Prompts provide updates on connection status and identifies callers by number.
  • The Clear Carbon Design is smaller, lighter, and more comfortable then ever before – it also creates a really sleek look and feel.
  • Smart Touch Surface lets you control volume, mute, voice mail and voice dial, as well as auto dial favorite numbers with a simple touch.
  • In addition to phone calls, you can use ActiveConnect to connect 2 media (A2DP) devices – such as a smartphone, tablet, iPad or Bluetooth-enabled PCs – and toggle back and forth.
  • With the free EarPrint 3.0 App you can unlock the array of extended features and customize the audio with Sound ID's patented PersonalSound™

Check out more about the SoundID SIX at www.soundid.com where it is available for $129.99.

Gameloft Updates UNO for BBM on BlackBerry 7 Smartphones

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 08:50 AM PST

Uno 4 Uno

Gameloft has not updated their UNO game for smartphones for awhile now. Oddly they just released a new UNO for BBM game that throws in multiplayer fun with an odd requirement. It only works on BlackBerry OS 7 devices. Specifically the Bold 9900, Torch 9810 & 9860, and Curve 9360. Hopefully they expand that pool soon but the concept of UNO over BBM sort of intrigues me…

Will the PlayBook pick up a little TouchPad momentum this holiday season?

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 07:30 AM PST

NPD group recently put out a report that claimed that the HP TouchPad has the second largest unit share in the tablet sphere after Apple’s iPad. AppleInsider wrote a post that (logically) theorized that that the marketshare is due directly to the TouchPad’s fire sale pricing earlier this year at $99. So my question is, will the PlayBook’s huge price drop encourage widespread adoption ala the TouchPad?

Brings a secure environment for conducting transactions
- Telefonica Digital has developed a version of its Wallet for NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphones
- To be deployed first in Spain as part of a Telefonica pilot that will roll out in several international markets in 2012

WATERLOO, ONTARIO and MADRID, SPAIN–(Marketwire – Nov. 23, 2011) –
Editors Note: There is a photo associated with this press release.
Telefonica Digital and Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced a pilot program of the Telefonica Wallet for BlackBerry(R) smartphones.

In collaboration with local banks and retailers, Telefonica will roll out the Telefonica Wallet for BlackBerry to 350 employees at its headquarters in Distrito Telefonica, Spain. Those taking part in the trial will be able to make payments in a simple, easy, safe and convenient way by simply tapping their NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphone against a reader. Employees that are part of the NFC pilot project will also be able use their BlackBerry smartphone (in lieu of a security card) to gain physical access to the Telefonica headquarters office.

The Telefonica Wallet for BlackBerry currently supports the following NFC-enabled smartphones: BlackBerry(R) Bold(TM) 9900, BlackBerry(R) Curve(TM) 9360 and BlackBerry(R) Curve(TM) 9380, all of which run the new BlackBerry(R) 7 operating system.

According to Julio Linares, COO from Telefonica, S.A., "We have chosen the BlackBerry solution for this pilot because of the security that the platform brings," He continued: "RIM’s participation has been key for this pilot project, and we are now planning to extend the project to more and more Telefonica employees around the world."

"We are getting ever closer to the point where our customers will be able to take the contents of their wallets and put them on their mobiles," said Matthew Key, Chairman & CEO Telefonica Digital. "Trials such as this are important to ensuring a great customer experience and we look forward to seeing the launch of commercial wallet services in several markets next year."

"RIM is committed to supporting the advancement of NFC and its many applications in the market," explained Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO at RIM. "We have a strong partnership with Telefonica Group and we are very proud to participate in this important pilot, which allows people to use their BlackBerry smartphone in place of separate physical cards for mobile payments and building access."

The Telefonica Wallet for BlackBerry makes use of SIM-based NFC capabilities, offering a simple interface for managing cards. The application replicates a physical wallet, showing the different cards available to the user. Once the user has selected a card, they are offered a range of options including making transactions, getting account balances, receiving confirmations from the bank.
Additional partners participating in the pilot include banking and financial institutions, retail and food stores, gas stations and others.

BlackBerry smartphones offer a secure environment for NFC payments. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Curve 9360 smartphones have already received certification for NFC payments and are compatible with the UICC/SWP protocol which, when used with Telefonica SIM cards, provides a secure platform for NFC use.

New Emergency Alert Messaging System in BlackBerry OS 7.1?

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 07:09 AM PST

Emergency Alert Messages BlackBerry 1 Emergency Alert Messages BlackBerry 2

I am not quite sure what to make of this latest rumor coming from N4BB. They scored some screenshots of a new Emergency Alert Messages system showing up on BlackBerry OS 7.1. It could be that RIM is just rebranding the old broadcast messaging system that nobody has ever really used for years. Or it could be some new system in place to send out alerts.

There are different alert message types including Presidential Alert, Extreme threat, Severe threat, Amber alert, and Monthly alert tests. You can disable all of them except for Presidential Alerts whatever that means.

Anybody have some conspiracy theory to explain this one? Maybe RIM is taking over the Amber alert system?

We have yet another cross platform messenger app from Hookt. This one is another take on cross platform messaging with inbox integration and send/read/typing indicators. It actually looks much better than the competition but still requires your friends to download yet another app…
