Desktop Manager Gets Small Update to v6.1.0.38 (B38)

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 01:45 PM PST

Desktop Manager Update

I could have sworn that this version was released before but it looks like I was wrong. TTune pointed out that RIM has rolled out a small update to BlackBerry Desktop Software for PCs bringing it to v6.1.0 B38. The Published Date on RIM's website says it came out on November 16th but this is the first I have seen of it.

If you compare the change log from the previous version 6.1.0.35 to the current version then the main thing I notice different is:

  • BlackBerry smartphones – You can add the following new smartphones to the BlackBerry Desktop Software:
    • BlackBerry Curve 9350
    • BlackBerry Curve 9370

You can download Desktop Manager v6.1.0 B38 here. Let us know if you notice anything else different. I am kind of curious if it also adds support for the just announced Bold 9790 and Curve 9380.

BlackBerry OS 7.1 Coming in December? PlayBook Keyboard Case in February?

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 12:22 PM PST

BlackBerry Innovation Forum

We have been hearing a bit about BlackBerry OS 7.1 that will come before RIM releases QNX phones. This update is supposed to iron out many of the bugs in BlackBerry OS 7 and throw in a few extras including Wi-Fi hotspot functionality from what I hear. The BlackBerryOS team attended RIM's latest BlackBerry Innovation Forum in Washington DC and learned a tad bit more about RIM's plans. Mainly they learned that BlackBerry OS 7.1 was aimed for a December launch. They were also showing off a Bluetooth keyboard/case combo for the PlayBook that is aimed for a February launch along with the PlayBook OS 2.0.

Here are some of the other highlights they learned:

PlayBook 2.0

  • Will have native email client with a a unique feature rich UI. Client will have more options than current bridge based mail client
  • Calendar completely revamped, and includes new "people view" feature
  • No plans for BBM client
  • Native file app
  • Contacts app more feature rich, more like current BlackBerry’s Contact list.
  • Target date around February 2012

Misc

  • RIM is working on Bluetooth keyboard and case that fit together for the PlayBook. Release around February 2012. Cost is a little over $100
  • RIM working on Enterprise App World for enterprise applications
  • OS 7.1 is looking like a December release
  • UMA update for 9900 may come later this year
  • RIM working on 10" PlayBook and larger BlackBerry devices for next year

Free Bricks Exploder Game for BlackBerry Smartphones

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 11:07 AM PST

bricks exploder bricks exploder4

Bricks Exploder is another fun game for classic gamers. The concept of the game is simply having you explode bricks of similar colors in combination. They also throw in some fun twists with different game modes including a continuous and shifter style. In Normal mode the number of bricks never increases but in continuous mode they keep on coming. In Shifter mode they move things around with the game moving the top bricks down and left every time you burst some blocks.

All in all the game is quite fun especially considering its free price tag. You can pick up Bricks Exploder free in App World.

9380Curve_AdAngle 9790Bold_SideAngleRight

If you needed any more signs that the recently announced BlackBerry Bold 9790 and BlackBerry Curve 9380 are launching soon then look no further. Carriers have started rolling out official OS releases for both devices on their download websites. Mauricio @BBRocks noticed that Telkomsel launched OS 7.0.0.482 for the BlackBerry Curve 9380. Bla1ze @CrackBerry noticed that Telkomsel has also released OS OS 7.0.0.496 for the BlackBerry Bold 9790.

Anybody want to guess when and where they will come out first?

Free BeepUs App Makes Push to Talk BBM a Reality

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 07:26 AM PST

BeepUs 5 BeepUs 2

I have always hoped that RIM would add Push to Talk or other voice calling features into BBM. So far RIM has just made it a little simpler to send voice notes but nothing near a full push to talk with presence solution. That has not stopped Tuk Digital Solutions from trying. I noticed a few friends on BBM were using BeepUs and decided to check it out. The free BeepUs app uses the new BBM social network APIs to allow you to have free Push to Talk conversations with your BBM friends.

BeepUs 3 BeepUs 4

I am not sure how well this will work continuously since RIM does have some limits on the transfer size and continuous connections on BBM but the concept is awesome. If you like sending voice notes or using Push to Talk you will love BeepUs . Hopefully Tuk keeps on adding new features to the app!

You can download BeepUs free in App World

TinyController: Control Your BlackBerry from Your PC or Mac via USB, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 05:55 AM PST

TinyController  TinyController2

Over the years there have been quite a few apps that let you control your BlackBerry from your PC. The latest to come to my attention (thanks Jaybo!) is TinyController by CompactByte. TinyController simply gives you no frills control of your BlackBerry smartphone from your PC or Mac through a USB, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth connection between the devices. The app is also focused on speed instead of features which is a different spin.

The best part is that TinyController offers up a 14 day free trial for you to give it a spin. This is because not all apps can work over such an app like BBM Groups so you should definitely try it out before you make the plunge. You can read more about it at www.tinycontroller.com or pick it up in App World for $9.99.
