Files & Folders v3.0 Adds Box.net Integration for the PlayBook

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 12:55 AM PST

The solid file manager, Files & Folders, for the BlackBerry PlayBook just got a nice update to v3.0. This new update gives it the ability to integrate with the Box.net cloud file service. While Box.net has their own PlayBook app, Files & Folders offers so much more. That includes DropBox, Google Docs, and zip file access. They have also added the ability to select multiple files and folders at the same time in v3.0.

Files & Folders is one of the main contenders for a file manager for the PlayBook. You can pick up the latest v3.0 of Files & Folders for $2.99 in App World with a free trial available. More info is available on their website www.webbsites.nl.

Rumor: BlackBerry App World 3.1 Coming Soon with “App Gifting” Feature

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 02:47 PM PST

App World of Possibilities

I have always been pushing RIM to drive App World improvements at a faster pace. Right now they have been on a 6-9 month release cycle even for small features and that needs to be sped up. Bla1ze over @CrackBerry got word that an update to App World bringing v3.1 is coming soon and being tested internally at RIM. It supposedly allows you to gift apps (aka purchase them for others) through App World. It also supposedly offers full Wi-Fi support to work even without a cellular connection.

These are nice features but there are Major Features that I feel App World needs to implement yesterday:

  • Speed things up! – Its ridiculous that it takes 1-7 days for an app or update to fully roll out. The whole website site could use a speed boost.
  • Gift Cards and Coupons – While gifting apps is nice why not just sell gift cards and let developers offer coupon codes to do giveaways?
  • Bigger Screenshots – Seriously the small PlayBook app screenshots are just sad

Black Friday PlayBook Prices Confirmed? PlayBook This Season’s Kindle Fire Killer?

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 01:30 PM PST

I was walking through my local Staples today and spent a few minutes playing with the demo unit for Amazon’s new Kindle Fire. Within a few minutes, a Staples employee came over and whispered that I should consider the BlackBerry PlayBook if I was looking for more of a “tablet” and less of a “reader.” I gave him an interested look and he followed up by telling me that the PlayBook would be the same price as the Kindle Fire on Black Friday. That would make the baseline PlayBook $199.99, a price that jives with what we previously reported here.  Is a $199.99 PlayBook this season’s Kindle Fire killer?

Design Chief at BlackBerry says 2012 Devices will be…..

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 12:12 PM PST

“Charming, whimsical and fun.” Those are the words from Todd Wood,  Senior VP of Industrial Design at RIM.  It is really hard to take away exactly what that means, but if it helps with the up hill battle RIM seems to be facing, then so be it.  We have seen great improvements on the classic BlackBerry keyboard on the 99xx series.  With the leaked specs of the QNX ‘London’ lets hope they are in the right direction.

Ronen had mentioned some of Todd’s comments the other day here and the original article is from Pocket Lint

So what do you think a ”Charming, whimsical and fun” BlackBerry will look like?

Interim PlayBook OS Update Coming Soon With Fixes

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 11:02 AM PST

tabletOS_bg2

One of RIM's Project Managers, John, let drop in the Beta Zone that a new PlayBook OS update is coming soon. This is an interm update that includes bug fixes and improvements without any new features. It is intended to fix some issues before the main 2.0 update in February. Mauricio @BBRocks noticed the thread on the beta zone which you can check out here but this summary below:

Howdy folks!

I just wanted to let you know that we're working on an interim Tablet OS software update to precede the 2.0 release in February. It won't have any new features (we're still perfecting those!), but a good percentage of the content came from this community.

Here is a list of some of the included changes (should make some of you happy):

- Daylight Savings Time: updated some time zones
- Updated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi drivers improving co-existence and connectivity
- BlackBerry App World account payments reliability improvements
- Improvements to VPN connection reliability
- Addressed some scenarios where BlackBerry Desktop Software would not restore applications to the PlayBook

You'll see this update within a few weeks. I know some of you wanted more in the interim, but the focus is going into making things solid for 2.0. For what impact this community did have on this update, I thank you!

I can update this thread when it becomes available.  In the mean time, feel free to share your thoughts!

John

International BBM Hackathons in Bangkok, Amsterdam, & London This Month

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 08:59 AM PST

 BBM Hackathons

Back in September we told you about a bunch of the upcoming BBM Hackathons for developers. Then we did not have the dates and details on the international events and it turns out there are three this month starting tomorrow! Planning very far in advance, Luke just posted the dates on RIM's developers blog:

  • Bangkok: November 17th and 18th, 2011
  • Amsterdam: November 24th and 25th, 2011
  • London, England: November 28th and 29th, 2011

My guess is it might be a bit too late to sign up for tomorrow in Bangkok but you may want to try out Amsterdam and London if they are local. Check out the details at bbmappshackathon.com.

Magmic Possibly Making Headway with Themes on BlackBerry 7 Devices

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 08:41 AM PST

BlackBerry 7 9900 Themes2 BlackBerry 7 9900 Themes

Obviously take this with a grain of salt but the veteran theme developers at Magmic seem to be getting a little closer to possibly getting themes on BlackBerry 7. In case you don't know RIM has not yet shipped a Theme Builder for BlackBerry 7 claiming the theme system was broken by the Liquid Graphics engine in BlackBerry 7. They said they do have an internal theme builder but nothing for external devs until mid-2012.

That has not stopped Magmic product manager @PeterMacPhoto from trying. He let us know that they have managed to get some parts of themes loaded on BlackBerry 7. On the other hand it is not an easy process and has some caveats and limitations in their workaround. Still he said they are "close to getting some full themes together" which is promising!

Free Nine Men’s Morris Two Player BBM Powered Strategy Game

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 07:44 AM PST

Eric let us know that he has just released a game he started developing at the New York City BBM Hackathon as part of Team BerryReview. The game, Nine Men's Morris, is a free two player strategy game letting you play your friends over BBM. It is a cross between the classic checkers and tic-tac-toe games and was created during the Roman Empire.

ninemen 9MensMorris

Here is how the game works:

To start the game each player places 9 tokens onto the gameboard. After all tokens are placed, the players take turns moving their own tokens to try and get three in a row to form a Mill. Forming a mill allows you to remove one of your opponents tokens from play. As with checkers you win after removing all of your opponents pieces, or by placing them in a position where they are unable to make a legal move.

You can pick up the free 9 Men's Morris game in App World. Let us know what you think!

There are 4 different stages with 60 levels and a nice bit of variation thrown in.

Crazy Lizard “Frogger-Like” Game for BlackBerry Smartphones

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 06:02 AM PST

Crazy Lizard Crazy Lizard3 Crazy Lizard2

Karmic Apps just released a fun game for BlackBerrys called Crazy Lizard in both a free and premium version. The game is essentially a clone of the classic Frogger game and plays nicely on most BlackBerrys. There are multiple difficulty levels for every type of player and you will definitely have some fun playing even without the arcade-nostalgia factor. They just need to work a little on the controls hopefully in a future update.

You can pick up Crazy Lizard for $0.99 in App World or the Free Crazy Lizard Lite also in App World
