BlackBerry PlayBook Battery Life Changed with OS 1.0.3? Possible Fixes

Some of you may already know that I cannot help but poke fun at RIM legal when the chance arises. Over the years the user agreements RIM legal has forced us to accept have been getting longer and longer. Now all RIM value added apps have their own like BBM, Facebook, App World, and they usually would take multiple pages to print not to mention the fact that the font is barely legible.

To make matters worse we now have an even more interesting twist on the User Agreement when it comes to the new video chat User Agreement for the BlackBerry PlayBook. In an interesting form of (hopefully accidental) coercion RIM has confirmed that not accepting the BlackBerry PlayBook v1.0.3 OS Video Chat User Agreement causes an issue where the "battery drains faster than normal or the battery level fluctuates irregularly." The second possible cause for such issues is that RIM has made "some changes to battery parameters" in OS 1.0.3 which can be fixed by discharging and recharging the battery a few times to "retrain" it.

Check out the full details here or below:

Overview

After upgrading the BlackBerry PlayBook Software to 1.0.3 then restarting the BlackBerry PlayBook, the battery drains faster than normal or the battery level fluctuates irregularly.

Environment

  • BlackBerry PlayBook
  • BlackBerry PlayBook Software 1.0.0 to 1.0.3
  • PR 97674

Cause 1

In BlackBerry PlayBook Software 1.0.3, changes have been made to battery parameters.

Cause 2

The Video Chat application’s User Agreement has not been accepted.

Resolution 1

The BlackBerry PlayBook battery can be retrained by fully discharging and fully recharging the battery a few times.

Resolution 2

On the BlackBerry PlayBook, launch the Video Chat application and accept the User Agreement.

Additional Information

To fully charge the BlackBerry PlayBook, make sure the charging (lightning bolt) icon is no longer displayed in the status bar before disconnecting the power source.

BlackBerry PlayBook TAT Cascades User Interface Engine and Native SDK on Video!

Posted: 05 May 2011 03:01 PM PDT

BlackBerry PlayBook SDK TAT Native UI Engine

RIM was a little more quiet about the Native SDK for the BlackBerry PlayBook but we got some sweet hands on time with Karl Berggren from TAT (The Astonishing Tribe) and Chris Smith (RIM). We showed you the power of the native SDK earlier today and how it allowed a RIM employee to port the Linux version of Quake III to the PlayBook in 4 days. While that will allow for some awesome games and gaming engines RIM has some sweet surprises in store for app developers in the Native SDK.

The TAT XML based Cascades User Interface Engine is baked right into the PlayBook and can do some pretty impressive stuff. For example, Karl was showing off a sample contacts application that would rise into 3D when you tilted the device. The astonishing part was that the whole app was written in about 4 screens of code. According to RIM this will allow developers to add visually appealing interfaces to BlackBerry PlayBook apps with ease. Developers will be able to use the UI elements or create their own using OpenGL if they have the experience.

Its nice to see that this is all baked into the PlayBook OS and will not require developers to repackage a library with every app. RIM is working on this to allow developers to create BlackBerry UI experiences that can be used consistently by developers if they so choose so users know how to interact with them. They are still deciding on which extensions they are going to support or develop but this shows some serious promise for BlackBerry apps. From what Chris and Ian explained the POSIX compatibility of the PlayBook OS will allow developers to easily reuse assets they have from other systems like Linux and bring them to the PlayBook. I have a dream of seeing VLC Player on my PlayBook…

I am writing this on the plane so I cannot go into too much detail (need to sleep!) but I highly recommend checking out the whole video and I will follow up with some more comments hopefully tomorrow. Let us know if you have any questions!

Android App Player for the BlackBerry PlayBook

While at BlackBerry World RIM showed off the BlackBerry PlayBook Android App Player and Native Email client live during the keynote but otherwise didn't let us anywhere near it. Thankfully RIM has posted up two videos showing off the upcoming apps. I didn't really hear anything new in the videos but if you wanted to see the apps in action check them out below!

BlackBerry Java SDK v7.0 Beta Features Announced – Coming This Month

Posted: 05 May 2011 11:25 AM PDT

BlackBerry Development

Fitting with the announcement of the upcoming Bold 9900 with OS 7.0 we now have RIM announcing the BlackBerry Java SDK v7.0 beta for developers to take advantage of the new OS features. RIM kind of confused me by hinting that it was "now in beta" as in today but it looks like they are just announcing that it will be announced later this month. :)

What I am really digging is this new "Send API" that will allow other apps to send information to contacts just like the RIM apps can. The new update will be coming in both Eclipse plugin and stand alone JDE format. Here are the new features RIM announced will be in the upcoming SDK v7.0 beta:

The BlackBerry® Java® Plug-in for Eclipse® and the BlackBerry® Java® Development Environment will both be updated to support the new OS version, and they bring with them an abundance of new APIs taking advantage of new device hardware features:

  • OpenGL ES 2.0, taking advantage of the new graphics chip, allows you to create games rich in compelling graphics.
  • Window Manager API, also taking advantage of the new graphics chip and increased device horsepower, allows you to overlay OpenGL or any other UI component on top of anything you want, including camera and video.
  • Compass APIs, taking advantage of the new magnetometer sensor, allows you to determine the device's orientation and direction. When combined with Window Manager API, enables the creation of augmented reality applications.
  • Near Field Communication (NFC) APIs, taking advantage of the new NFC radio, allows you to read and emulate virtual tags and create rich solutions for payment and m-commerce.
  • Video capture APIs updated with support for HD video recording, taking advantage of the improved camera, allows your application to provide the user with the same high end media experience they get from the core apps.

Beyond supporting new hardware features, there are also new APIs to further enable the Super Apps experience:

  • Send Menu API, allowing apps to share content with contacts the same way that core apps do, by adding a "Send…" menu to their apps.
  • Unified Search API has been updated, making integration with this device feature easier than ever before and allowing more control of indexed keywords.
  • BlackBerry® Maps API has also been updated, simplifying how data is overlaid on top of BlackBerry Maps. Couple that with support for geofencing and the ability to overlay complex shapes and polygons, and you've got the richest integration with BlackBerry Maps to date.
  • Options API has evolved to match the new look and feel of the BlackBerry 6 options screens, allowing third party apps to add their own entries into the options screen including an icon and descriptive text.
  • Multimedia API has added support for buffer control for playback and bitrate definition for video recording.
  • Barcode API has been updated to support ZXing 1.6 and allow for the definition of custom decorders.

Twitter for BlackBerry Beta v2.0 Available in the Beta Zone!

We heard about Twitter for BlackBerry v2.0 earlier this week at BlackBerry World and now it is live in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. RIM has a little coverage about the update on their blog but they sum it up well by describing it as "Simplified Navigation." What I really love is that they are moving to a more iterative development approach where they release smaller updates more frequently so we don't have to wait months between feature updates.

The new update is available in Beta Zone at this link

BES 5.0.3 Express

Almost exactly a year after BES Express was introduced we now have BES 5.0.3. I am loving that RIM is finally updating the small business/free version of BES almost in tandem with BES Premium which just got the 5.0.3 update last month. The update is available for both Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange.

You can download BES Express 5.0.3 from the BlackBerry website at this link

Quake III Multiplayer Hands On Video on the PlayBook

Posted: 05 May 2011 07:00 AM PDT

RIM has been touting the power of the native SDK but it has not been released yet till later this. This SDK will make it extremely easy to port games to the BlackBerry PlayBook. We got a hands on with Quake III which was ported from the original source code. It took the guys from RIM around 4 days to port it over to the BlackBerry PlayBook, and one day to refine all the control settings with a multi touch experience, and a complete 3D gaming experience. Having no experience in Playing Quake III before I quickly was able to learn and use the multi-touch controls on the PlayBook. The best part is that you can play against anybody that has a BlackBerry PlayBook. The guys from RIM said they tested over Wi-Fi around eight devices connected at once and it showed no lag. The demo below was on three different PlayBooks connected over WI-Fi showing the Power of the native SDK an  future possibilities of the device.  Check out the video below where I get owned by the guys from RIM Playing Quake III.
