Foursquare for BlackBerry Alpha Updated to v1.9.89

Posted: 25 May 2011 03:48 AM PDT

Foursquare Alpha Build

Foursquare users who love to live on the bleeding edge can try their hands at a new alpha build. This version sadly does not add the integration with BlackBerry Messenger 6 using the new RIM Social Platform but it does have a few tweaks. Keep in mind there have been a few cases of alpha builds causing device instability in the past so proceed at your own risk and make sure to backup your device!

This new v1.9.89 beta includes:

  • Improved friend management
  • Changes to location support, let us know if this improves your location lookup.
  • Addition of specials 2.0.
  • Automated checking of app permissions.
  • And LOTS of small tweaks

You can pick up the Alpha Foursquare build at www.foursquare.com/blackberry/alpha Kudos to PocketBerry via SugarmanTreacle for scoring the change log.

appworld.blackberry.com_031This OS leak will be no good for many unless you are a lucky person with an unreleased curve 9350, or the malibu/orlando 9370. For those of you who like to create hybrids this might give you something to kill some time and look around to see what RIM has included on this. This is also the first time we have seen an OS with the new OS version 7.0.

To download the OS use the following links:

Three IRC Clients for the BlackBerry PlayBook (So Far!)

Posted: 24 May 2011 03:05 PM PDT

IMG_00000385 IMG_00000381

One of the areas I have always missed on my BlackBerry is the lack of a solid IRC (Internet Relay Chat) client. I tend to find some great advice on IRC and usually have to fire up a laptop or desktop to access it properly. We do have one or two clients for BlackBerry smartphones but within a month of launch we have three for the BlackBerry PlayBook. They range from free to $2.99 and I am still trying them out one by one:

So far I have found the clients to be a bit basic and am surprisingly having fun with the free FIRC. Aurora seems to have the most features but not by much. These clients are relatively bare bones but they get the job done. Here is to hoping we get quite a few other clients along with more features in the current IRC clients soon!

Details on BlackBerry Business Cloud Services for Microsoft Office 365

Posted: 24 May 2011 12:49 PM PDT

Steve Balmer BlackBerry World

RIM is gearing up for the beta of the BlackBerry Business Cloud Services for Microsoft Office 365 that was mentioned offhand and then confirmed at BlackBerry World. This new beta is set to start in June with a limited trial and will allow enterprise customers to deploy BlackBerrys from the cloud. The service will be a RIM hosted BlackBerry Enterprise service/subscription starting at $0 per user per month and will have features similar to BlackBerry Express for that plan. I simply think of it as a free cloud based BlackBerry Express for Office 365 Exchange Online.

Here is a bit on how RIM describes the service:

  • BlackBerry wireless sync with Microsoft Office 365 Exchange Online with the fastest, most efficient, most secure and most reliable wireless service in the industry
  • BlackBerry Balance, allowing an employee's use of a single BlackBerry smartphone for both work and personal use without compromising the security of corporate data
  • Online self-service BlackBerry smartphone management and security, including remote device wipe
  • Advanced BlackBerry security with a rich complement of IT policies that can be set and managed online
  • Simple, secure user and user group management online
  • Single sign-on to Office 365 and the RIM-hosted BlackBerry enterprise service
  • Service available with always up-to-date BlackBerry software

Let us know if BlackBerry Business Cloud Services for Microsoft Office 365 is something you are interested in. For years I have been waiting for RIM to simply offer BES in the cloud for simple PIM sync like contacts and calendar. I always thought they would do well if they simply integrated Microsoft ActiveSync into BIS for automatic synchronization without a BES server. Until then BlackBerry Business Cloud Services sounds promising and is hitting at the right price point. I have heard that RIM plans on extending it beyond Office 365 hosting which should broaden the appeal.

Labyrinth v2.3 Adds New Levels – 30% Off Coupon for Premium Version

Posted: 24 May 2011 09:15 AM PDT

 labyrinth2 labyrinth5

Labyrinth is one of my favorite games on my BlackBerry. Its a recreation of the classic wooden labyrinth game on your phone where you guide the steel ball to the finish hole while avoiding pits and traps. The only real downside is the game is only available for Storm and Torch devices. The game was just updated by BerryBlow and the new version 2.3 adds a new levels pack to the game to shake things up.

If you purchased a previous version of Labyrinth you can upgrade the game directly at this link. BerryBlow is celebrating the launch of this new version with a 30% off coupon until May 25th using the code labyrinth23 in the store bringing the $4.99 price to $3.49. There is also a free LITE version available in the store here.

RIM Expands Free BlackBerry Travel App to 48 Countries

Posted: 24 May 2011 06:46 AM PDT

When RIM first rolled out their BlackBerry Travel app built on WorldMate back in February it was only available in North America, UK, and Spain (for Mobile World Congress). Yousif @CrackBerry noticed that BlackBerry Travel has been quietly expanded to 48 countries as of my count. My guess is more countries will be rolled out soon but if you are in one of the 40 countries I recommend checking the app out. Its free and really helps manage your travel itinerary if you travel often.

You can pick up the BlackBerry Travel app in App World

RIM Upgraded BlackBerry ID to v1.2.1 With New Password Reset Procedure

Posted: 24 May 2011 06:33 AM PDT

BlackBerry ID Password Lost

Normally we wouldn't mention when RIM performs backend upgrades that don't change much for end users but I found this one a bit interesting. RIM is moving in the right direction with BlackBerry ID consolidating your BlackBerry credentials all into one system. I am really hoping they move quickly and tie in other services like your BIS login soon along with backing up your whole device beyond what BlackBerry Protect does. Still RIM has treated BlackBerry ID as a sort of military strength credentials with precautions not usually seen in consumer solutions including everything short of two factor authentication. On the other hand they seem to becoming a bit more lenient. You can see what I mean below.

This past weekend they performed a maintenance upgrade to BlackBerry ID bringing it to version 1.2.1 bringing along the following updates:

  • RIM offers up a better self service password reset procedure for BlackBerry ID
  • RIM lowered the bar a bit so you no longer need to answer the security question to reset your password
  • On the other hand reset password emails will NOT be delivered to your BlackBerry so you will have to login to your email account tied to the BlackBerry ID to reset your password
  • You can still use the reset link from your BlackBerry if you login through webmail from the browser.

RIM has posted some instructions on how to perform the password reset procedure. (funny that they use a screenshot from Gmail in the instructions) I actually asked RIM on Twitter a bit back what a user would do if they no longer remember the security question they set on their BlackBerry ID account and I guess they realized they needed a process to address that. On the other hand they still have no way to deal with users who no longer have access to the BlackBerry ID email address or want to move purchases from one email to another (say you leave the company you work for).

Let us know if there is something else you think RIM should be adding to BlackBerry ID!

Free Aitch Puzzle Game for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 24 May 2011 05:57 AM PDT

IMG_00000379 IMG_00000375

I find myself playing quite a few more games on my BlackBerry PlayBook compared to my Torch. I think the bigger screen and abundance of free puzzle games is what really does it for me. The latest I have discovered is aitch from Birnam Designs. The game is a slick puzzle game where you use the different objects on the screen to aim your ship at the target while avoiding asteroids and other obstacles. The only real downside is the game is limited to portrait view only.

IMG_00000380 IMG_00000377

From the description:

You are Mr. Aitch, assistant to a brilliant but dangerously forgetful scientist. You must go behind him and turn off his experiments before they wreak havoc on the universe!

Solve puzzles and get to the switch by aiming and launching your ship. Avoid dangerous asteroids, use the gravity of nearby planets and stars, and bounce off of exotic Rimorr Fields. There might be more than one solution! You get additional points for accuracy and the number of elements you interact with. Free version comes with one ship type and 36 levels. Premium version will be released soon!

You can find Aitch free in App World at this link
