Walmart Selling BlackBerry PlayBook – Amazon Accepting Preorders Posted: 20 May 2011 03:09 AM PDT Since RIM announced the retail locations for the BlackBerry PlayBook I have been wondering about a few of the companies conspicuously missing from the list. For example, they had Walmart in Canada but not in the US and Amazon and other competitors like Newegg and Buy.com were nowhere to be seen. Now we can happily report that two more are on board. Corey let us know that he picked up his BlackBerry PlayBook at Walmart a few weeks ago. Walmart.com has all three size variants of the PlayBook and free shipping to Walmart stores if one is closer than a Best Buy, Staples, or Radio Shack. Bla1ze @CrackBerry also spotted Amazon's new preorder pages for the BlackBerry PlayBook which is shipping from them starting June 1st. I am not sure what took these merchants so long to get on board but I am glad they are starting to get in the game. It is kind of interesting to see how easily RIM has grown from a direct to carrier to a direct to channel/consumer sales approach. Let us know if you spot any other retailers carrying the PlayBook! BlackBerry Theme Studio 6 Gold Release Now Available Posted: 19 May 2011 09:16 AM PDT RIM is rolling out betas into production today. BlackBerry Theme Studio 6 has been in beta for awhile now and just got an update in late January. It is kind of crazy to think that the beta came out months after BlackBerry 6 devices started shipping and now it is releasing into Gold status right before the launch of BlackBerry OS 7 in the next month or two. Still developers have been making themes with the Beta for months now so it really did not make that much of a difference. In case you are a theme developer who has avoided BlackBerry Theme Studio in beta form you can get the Gold Release now with these features:

Dear RIM, Can We Get Network Activity “Arrows” on the BlackBerry PlayBook? Posted: 19 May 2011 09:06 AM PDT There is one thing I am really missing on the BlackBerry PlayBook that I have always treasured on my BlackBerry Smartphone as far as I can remember. Data activity arrows showing you what is going on when the app does not offer you a progress notification. I can understand that they may be distracting in some apps but when you are in the browser or other apps it would be really nice to be able to visually see that there is something going on. In the browser it would be even better if it could show you the items it is requesting in a bottom status bar kind of like Firefox 4 or Google Chrome does. I am really curious to know if I am the only one missing this "feature" on the BlackBerry PlayBook. RIM could even integrate it into the current top left red arrow style by adding in a top right arrow where it would show a horizontal line for data transfer coming in and a vertical one for data transfer going out. What do you think? If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Twitter for BlackBerry v2.0 Available to All In App World Today Posted: 19 May 2011 07:06 AM PDT Twitter for BlackBerry v2.0 hit the Beta Zone at the beginning of this month and it is now ready for prime time. RIM let us know that this new version will be rolling out to everybody in App World in the next 24 hours. This new version is part of RIM's new iterative development approach where they release smaller updates more frequently which is kind of cool. We told you before that this new version features simplified navigation but here is how RIM describes the new update:
Keep on hitting the Twitter for BlackBerry app link in App World for the update. I know the "up to 24 hours" wait sucks but imagine if only RIM had a technology that would allow them to push updates immediately… If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Flips AT&T the Bird and Offers PlayBook Bridge Desktop Install Files Directly Posted: 19 May 2011 06:56 AM PDT RIM is having some fun with AT&T over the BlackBerry Bridge feature on the BlackBerry PlayBook. AT&T is the only holdout carrier for BlackBerry Bridge and RIM blocks AT&T customers from downloading the Bridge app in App World. While others have already extracted the app and made it available to AT&T customers there are many who don't trust other sources including enterprise customers. Turns out RIM feels their pain and made the BlackBerry Bridge desktop installation files available directly from RIM. You will need desktop manager on your computer to install this app using RIM's download but it works like a charm. The interesting part is that RIM says:
I really hope RIM does not give AT&T a way to charge for the Bridge feature. Once they let that dam break all hell will break loose. You can pick up the install files at the bottom of the page at this link. Now if only RIM would simply let all customers download the Bridge application from App World. RBC Analyst Estimates First Month BlackBerry PlayBook Sales at 250,000 Posted: 19 May 2011 05:32 AM PDT I am always curious how analysts make these estimates but the latest one is coming from RBC analyst Mike Abramsky. He estimates that RIM sold 250,000 PlayBooks in the first 30 days since launch. He also claims that they might sell 500,000 in the first quarter after launch. These "estimates" are based on "Checks at 180 Best Buys show 14 percent of the 16GB model sold out, 71 percent of the 32GB model sold out, and 84 percent of the 64GB model sold out; however, 32GB/64GB stock-outs appear allocation-related." I am not a mathematician or anything but that does not seem very scientific but I guess that is why it is an estimate. I am not sure what sort of extrapolations Abramsky is using but it seems to be missing big players like Staples, Radio Shack, and the many other retail locations. On top of that checking at Best Buy stores totally disregards the business market which does not head on over to Best Buy store to pick up multiple devices. What do you think? Even at 250,000 that is a pretty nice following for the PlayBook and RIM only has more features to come. via AllThingsD If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
