RIM Explains Why BBM For Other Platforms is NOT On the Road Map

Posted: 06 May 2011 03:54 PM PDT

bbm_mastDuring a Q&A session with Mike Kirkup from Research in Motion (RIM) and a panel that included developers from Foursquare, Polar Mobile,Poynt, Wikitude, and a few others RIM touched on the subject of BBM for other platforms. The session was interesting the guys shared their experience of working with the Webworks SDK. It seems RIM is moving in the right direction attracting good developers while empowering the current ones.

One of the key questions that stood out to me was "When is BBM going cross platform or to the PC? Kirkup was straight forward and said that there was no plan or intentions of doing either. The reason being is that BBM is a key to attracting customers to BlackBerry. Another reason is the fact that the infrastructure that runs BBM is internal and taking it outside of RIM’s would be probably a really bad idea. I am not saying it couldn’t happen but i do not see how doing that would benefit them. There are quite a few apps already do that but not as good as BBM. If RIM really wanted to do that it would make more sense to maybe buy one of the 3rd party developers such as live profile or Whatsapp and simply give it access to API’s that would allow others to use that app to send messages to BBM users and vise versa. But I believe BBM needs to stay in-house.

We recorded most of the Q&A session so if you are a developer we encourage you to watch the video. You may find some interesting information on it. If you are interested on hearing about the BBM questions skip to 4 minutes on the video, the video is quite long.

RIM Talks Multi-Platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution – Sign Up for Preview!

Posted: 06 May 2011 03:03 PM PDT

Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video Link

RIM put up an interview on their Inside BlackBerry for Business Blog with Pete Devenyi, Vice President Communications Platform Group at RIM, where he talks about the upcoming Multi-Platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution. Quite a few customers are looking for one solution to manage their BlackBerry, iPhone, and Android deployments and RIM is addressing that need with the acquisition of Ubitexx. This upcoming solution will start hitting beta mode this summer ramping up to a release within the year. I know this was a strategic announcement by RIM since many companies are looking for a single solution to manage all devices and RIM wants to let them know it is coming.

It is interesting to see Pete talk about RIM finally supporting a multiplatform solution. He also mentioned that there is a limited preview release that Ubitexx is offering at www.ubitexx.com/preview for the first 1000 customers or so who sign up. If you check it out let us know!

Developer Hacks QNX Native SDK Code Onto BlackBerry PlayBook! Provides Instructions

Posted: 06 May 2011 12:00 PM PDT

BlackBerry PlayBook Native SDK Code Compiling

Developer Adam Bell managed to beat RIM to the punch in figuring how to get native QNX SDK code to run on the BlackBerry PlayBook. Currently PlayBook developers are limited to the Adobe Air and WebWorks for development though RIM has announced and demoed a Native SDK along with Android and Java Player support. What Adam Bell managed to do is copy QNX apps developed using the QNX Nutrino Software Development Platform (SDP) and have them run!

He took an app that was compiled using the C/C++ native SDP invoking the cross compiler and copied it across to the tablet. At first he tried copying over the code using SSH with the devuser account in development mode but that did not allow the app to run due to permissions issues. He then learned that he could set the binary as executable and then zipped it up. He then copied it over to the downloads folder and unzipped it and then he could run the binary.

Check out his report on how he managed to get the code compiled and working along with the source code. Adam also let me know that you can find some details on SlashGear.

Kudos to Adam for figuring this out. Hopefully some more developers will pick up the torch and show off the capabilities of the native QNX real time environment. This is truly where the QNX based BlackBerry PlayBook will shine!

Back in March we told you that ReelPortal was bringing their cross platform Adobe Air video chat application to the BlackBerry PlayBook. Thuyen from ReelPortal let me know that it is now live in App World. Many users have been asking for a cross platform video chat application for the PlayBook and until Skype or another larger solution comes out ReelPlayer is the only one I know of. The app is designed to work on multiple OS's so you can video chat with users from their PC through the app.

Here is how they describe their solution:

ReelPortal is an Adobe AIR 2.5 based video chat and conferencing app for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Designed to work with multiple devices and OSes, its features include:

  • video conference with multiple friends
  • join a public room, or create your own locked private room
  • supports both P2P and client/server connections
  • Persistent connection allows switching between Wi-Fi and 3G without dropping connections
  • Use it as a nanny-cam or video monitoring system
  • ReelPortal is room-centric. You automatically connect to everyone in a room when you enter with no need to call them individually.

You can find ReelPortal in App World or simply head on over to www.reelportal.com to check it out from your browser.

BlackBerry WebWorks Platform Gaining Serious Traction

Posted: 06 May 2011 09:45 AM PDT

IMG_3533

The BlackBerry WebWorks platform that RIM rebranded and announced a bit back is really starting to coming into its own. Even before BlackBerry World I have see the platform grow and the BlackBerry PlayBook only helped it along. I have even been dabbling myself with a few apps that I created in the WebWorks SDK. The PlayBook browser really lets these apps shine with its faster processing speed but BlackBerry 7 should offer a similar experience. For BlackBerry 7 RIM has rewritten the browser using the new hardware enhanced graphics to run the HTML, image, and JavaScript processing in separate threads along with JIT (Just in Time) JavaScript processing.

If you really want to be impressed with a "WebWorks" style app look no further than the BlackBerry Bridge. Chris Smith from RIM confirmed for me that the BlackBerry Bridge on the BlackBerry PlayBook is rendered with the WebKit browser though obviously with access to more API's. Other apps like Slacker for BlackBerry and the very popular Rogers Hockeycentral app are also both written using WebWorks on the PlayBook. Chris also confirmed that the BBM Social Platform API's for WebWorks are coming in the next few weeks.

What really blew my mind is when I asked Mike Kirkup to give me an idea of the share of WebWorks apps in App World. He gave a rough estimate of almost a third of App World apps are built on the WebWorks platform. Even the traditionally Java based shop at Polar Mobile (the team that runs the BerryReview Mobile app) confirmed that they are using WebWorks for their PlayBook apps. The picture you see above is actually a running copy of their WebWorks framework for upcoming applications. It has all the animations and page flipping you would expect in a native app though it is all rendering in the WebKit engine.

I was curious what the adoption of WebWorks looked like in the enterprise market now that MDS is long gone. Chris and Mike noted that companies are using WebWorks to easily leverage existing assets into BlackBerry applications and the use case for enterprises is growing as they move past the legacy device barrier since WebWorks requires OS 5.0+. RIM had Andrew Terry from TouMetis who confirmed that they make all of their enterprise healthcare and finance apps in WebWorks and are very happy with the platform along with the direction RIM is taking it.

I also asked Chris and Mike if API's will be coming to WebWorks at the same time as other platforms which is not currently the case. Right now the WebWorks API's for BlackBerry Smartphones is built in Java and then they built the WebWorks API's on top of them. For the PlayBook they are working on keeping the API's and services separate in the native environment so that all of the platforms can access them without layering them one on top of the other.

Its exciting to see what WebWorks has in store for us in the future. I am actually almost done with a WebWorks app for BerryReview but I am trying to style it with the design guidelines RIM proposes which has proven a bit tricky. RIM is slowly embracing the different pockets of web developers out there from jQuery to Sencha to Dojo and I think we will see alot of movement here in the next few months leading up to DevCon!

RIM Talks BlackBerry PlayBook Android App Player for Developers

    Posted: 06 May 2011 07:15 AM PDT

    IMG_3446

At BlackBerry World I heard a bit more about the BlackBerry PlayBook Android App Player beyond what RIM showed at the keynote we covered. Chris Smith, Senior Directory BlackBerry Development Platform, provided a little bit more info on what it means for developers. The main question developers have been asking is how they will package their apps.

RIM will be providing an extension for the Android SDK (Chris called it the Android Developer Source Kit) which will allow developers to simply repackage the Android app and sign it. In some cases developers will have to recompile the app then developers might need to adjust a few things to make the app work properly. What was really interesting was that all of the apps shown at the keynote were simply recompiled from the binary without access to the source code.

RIM also mentioned that the Android Player will be a standalone platform but repackaged apps will look the same as PlayBook apps with homescreen icons and emulated buttons. The platform will have access to low level features on the PlayBook like the Camera, Network, and GPS but not the rest of the RIM services like the advertising service or analytics. Apps that are developed with the Android Native SDK will not be able to use the Android Player but due to the POSIX compatibility many components of apps should be portable between the platforms.

Let us know if you have any other questions!

BlackBerry PlayBook Bridge to be Opened Up to Developers!

    Posted: 06 May 2011 05:30 AM PDT

    BlackBerry PlayBook Bridge

Yes you read that right! Mike Kirkup, Director of Developer Relations at RIM, and Chris Smith, Senior Director for the BlackBerry Development Platform, confirmed at BlackBerry World this week that the BlackBerry PlayBook Bluetooth Bridge will be opened up to 3rd party developers. This will allow developers to pass information back and forth between BlackBerry Smartphones and the PlayBook. RIM will be opening up API's to allow things like making a phone call or sending a link to the browser.

Mike and Chris took it a step further saying that they plan on even giving developers access to the Bluetooth stack to be able to create their own "bridge" interface for anything they can dream up. That means that apps like Tether might have a future on the BlackBerry PlayBook. It also means RIM plans on a tighter integration between the two devices even in third party apps without the limitations imposed in the current smartphone OS.

They didn't mention a time frame but did mention that they will have a ton of surprises in store for DevCon this year!
