Developer Manages to Convert Flash and AIR Apps for BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 13 May 2011 02:27 AM PDT

Flash Games

One of our long time development contributor on the forums, Keeper, has figured out how to take flash games and port them to the BlackBerry PlayBook as apps. Right now it seems to be a bit hit and miss but if you are into messing around with code and JRE's you might want to check out this forum thread with his examples and instructions. He also has another thread going explaining how to side load other apps to the PlayBook. Its not for the faint of heart and make sure to stay on the right side of the law!

OS 6.1.0.50 Leaked for Unreleased BlackBerry 9810 9860 and 9900

Posted: 12 May 2011 06:36 PM PDT

imageIt seems like the RIM marketing department has not had a chance to send the memo to their "leaks" group. :) RIM has confirmed by now that they have renamed OS 6.1 to OS 7.0 but we now have OS 6.1.0.50 leaked (via Driphter) for the BlackBerry 9810 codename Jennings, 9860 codename Monza, and 9900 codename Dakota. So far RIM has only officially confirmed the existence of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 but the others will come soon.

Download for 9810 (Jennings)
Download for 9860 (Monza)
Download for 9900 (Dakota)

While most of you will not be able to enjoy anything from this leak that will probably change very soon. As we speak there are hardcore BlackBerry users tearing apart these leaks for the updated applications. Something tells me we will be seeing OTA links shortly.

Warning: This OS will not install on any other BlackBerry besides the one mentioned above and is not an official release. If you do not know how to upgrade your BlackBerry OS please start by reading this step by step guide.Don't forget to delete the vendor.xml file located in c:program files>common files>research in motion>apploader to install it on a different carriers device. Don't forget our usual warnings: do not download and install these updates if you don't know what you're doing. Incorrect procedure or just bad luck could render your BlackBerry inoperative or unstable.

Possible Leaked Screenshot of BlackBerry App World 3.0?

Posted: 12 May 2011 02:36 PM PDT

BlackBerry App World 3.0

We have been hearing rumblings of a nice update coming to App World. Now we have a screenshot from BBNew.pl (via PocketBerry) and what may be the new design of that upcoming version of App World. This is all still a rumor for now but it looks sweet. I am really hoping RIM makes use of the new OpenGL features in OS 7.0 to really make BlackBerry apps shine.

We just told you that OS 6.0.0.570 leaked for the BlackBerry Torch 9800. That OS had a few surprises in it including some updated versions of the Google Talk, Yahoo, AIM, and Windows Live Messenger clients. We have not noticed anything new in the updates but I am hoping it fixes my random disconnects from Google Talk.

Thanks to Adam @CrackBerry for compiling the links:

Let us know what you find!

RIM’s Alec Taylor Talks BlackBerry Balance in Latest Video

Posted: 12 May 2011 01:35 PM PDT

Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video Link

The RIM blogs did a great job of videotaping some explanations of new BlackBerry announcements by RIM execs while at BlackBerry World. Jerry pointed out to me that we skipped over a very important one where RIM's Alec Taylor, VP of Platform Product Marketing, talks about the BlackBerry Balance.

In case you don't know BlackBerry Balance is RIM's attempt at giving your BlackBerry a split personality where it can perform both work and personal functions on the same device. It is interesting to hear RIM talk about it because they seem to be trying to address a need caused by consumers bringing their BlackBerrys to work. Companies are struggling to secure these devices especially with the demand for apps like Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks.

Check it out and let us know what you think. You can learn more about BlackBerry Balance at this link.

Aqualux Pipe Puzzle Game for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 12 May 2011 11:25 AM PDT

aqualux aqualux2

I have actually had Aqualux on my PlayBook for a few weeks now but never got a chance to write about it. Aqualux is a really slick puzzle game with great graphics for the BlackBerry PlayBook. I have been pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to pick up and play a few minutes during the day. The idea of the game is to "Swap, twist, turn, slide and teleport magic pipes" that guide water to the drain during the allotted time. Things get interesting along the way which is quite fun.

Aqualux is a perfect puzzle game for the BlackBerry PlayBook and is priced well at $2.99 in App World.

tinyHippos Ripple Emulator Beta Now Supports WebWorks APIs Along With Better Documentation

Posted: 12 May 2011 07:16 AM PDT

webworks-update

RIM's acquisition of tinyHippos is starting to shape into a strategy. They have just announced that tinyHippos crew has updated their Ripple emulator BETA program to support "most of the BlackBerry WebWorks APIs." You can find out which ones are available at this link. In case you don't remember tinyHippos expertise is in mobile development and testing especially with HTML5 mobile apps (think WebWorks).

I have not had a chance to play with it yet but according to RIM the new Beta of Ripple will let you place your BlackBerry WebWorks app on a local web server and point the Ripple emulator at the website to test the WebWorks app without having to compile it and open it in a simulator.

Check out more about the tinyHippos Ripple BETA here

RIM has also improved and combined the documentation for the BlackBerry WebWorks APIs for both the Tablet and Smartphone version of WebWorks. The documentation is MUCH better than previous versions but it still needs some work like the ability to leave comments and collaborate.  They do make a point of linking to sample apps and other RIM docs which is a huge improvement!

BlackBerry Bold 9900s Showing Up on eBay? Are They a Scam?

Posted: 12 May 2011 06:51 AM PDT

Bold 9900 eBay

Its almost a tradition to see soon to be released BlackBerry devices on eBay or other sale sites. These devices tend to be prerelease hardware/OS and may have issues in the future but some people cannot help themselves and need the latest tech. That is why I was a bit curious when Terrence pointed out to me that there are currently two BlackBerry Bold 9900 available for sale on eBay. The odd part is that these devices are usually auctioned off but both of these listings are to Buy It Now. Also odd is that they each claim to have 10+ devices though they will only be shipping them between Jun. 27 and Fri. Jul. 1.

In short it looks like these listings are a scam or at the very least a "Buy for a ridiculous price and wait until they are available" kind of deal. The reason I thought this is worth mentioning is because one of these sellers has 100% positive feedback on over 1500 transactions and the other has 94.8% positive feedback on 324 transactions. The feedback seems to be from valid phone sales so I am not sure exactly what the story is here…

Let us know if you figure it out! Otherwise I would recommend steering clear from ordering one of these.

IM+ Pro v9 Public Beta Connects You With Other IM+ Users

Posted: 12 May 2011 05:54 AM PDT

UPDATE: Shape wanted to clarify that the public beta of IM+ Pro v9 is a free beta. No word on if it will remain free after the beta.

9800 9800-01

Shape let us know about their new public beta of IM+ Po v9.0.0.7 which they just released. They are bringing a whole new dimension to their cross platform instant messaging client by adding in location. You will be able to locate your friends using IM+ on a map and chat with them. Better yet it also lets you chat with other people who are located around you. Personally I think that is a bit creepy but its sort of like a mash up of Foursquare and BBM.

9800-05 9800-06

Wikitude showed off something similar coming with BlackBerry OS 7 and augmented reality but IM+ Pro has some more tricks. With IM+ Pro v9 you will be able to find new connections and friends with common interests. You will also be able to buy and sell local services and good. In your status update you can offer your local goods or services and see offers in your area.

Its a pretty aggressive move by Shape with IM+ Pro v9 but who knows it may take off. I feel like it might have a better chance if it did not carry the usually high IM+ price tag. You can check out the beta of IM+ Pro v9 at this link.
