Latest OS Leak for Verizon Bold 9930 Adds NFC Support Posted: 17 Aug 2011 02:53 PM PDT For some odd reason RIM went along with Verizon in disabling NFC in the launch OS for the BlackBerry Bold 9930 on Verizon. Thankfully it looks like the lock is simply OS based instead of some service book. Adam @CrackBerry noticed that this latest leak of OS 7.0.0.340 enables NFC on the Verizon Bold 9930. There is not much a regular user can use with this but it does open the door for devs to create some cool applications. I am simply waiting for an app that lets you share contact info by tapping phones… If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

What’s with the Kiddish BlackBerry 7 Icons RIM? Posted: 17 Aug 2011 01:03 PM PDT It’s been a couple of days now since I got my BlackBerry 9900 and it’s truly every die hard BlackBerry fan’s dream phone. While I could go on about all the vast improvement I have seen considering I was still rocking my old Bold, I will opt to sum up the entire improvements with two words, NO LAG! RIM has kept its word on improving the overall performance of these new BlackBerry smartphones and customers will show their appreciation by buying these new phones. But one thing seems to be bugging me about my new BlackBerry 9900. What’s with the kiddish icons? Okay, so maybe kiddish isn’t the proper term or perhaps it sound rather harsh but you can choose to replace the word with what ever word works for you. My point is that these icon just feels too unpolished and cartoonish. While icons like BBM and the music icons look sharper the vast majority of the icons on OS 7 just seems unpolished and unified. I thought perhaps it was just simply me that thought this way but a couple of my friends have made similar comments. Some even go as far as to say the icons on OS 5 seem more polished. Similar comments are also being made about the new icons on App World 3.0 and the overall UI. It just feels too unpolished at this point of the game and rather silly. Now saying all that, I know icons are not a make or break thing when it comes to purchasing a phone, but it does add to the overall customer satisfaction with the product. Small crucial details like these are ultimately what will make RIM standout as it eventually matches its other competitors in terms of specs and overall performance. The BlackBerry experience needs unified UI experience to increase the customer satisfaction and having kiddish or cartoonish icons doesn’t help. BlackBerry Bold 9900 & 9930 Reviews Roundup! Posted: 17 Aug 2011 09:50 AM PDT Reviews of RIM's latest flagship BlackBerry started going live this week with more trickling in every day. I am sure you already enjoyed reading my review of the BlackBerry Bold 9930 but it never hurts to get multiple perspectives. The reviews of the device are overwhelmingly positive though small gripes do come up along with complaints about it not running QNX and the 3rd party app platform. Reviewers are really impressed with what RIM did with the BlackBerry Bold 9900 especially when it comes to the product design. This device shows that RIM can compete with the heavyweights when it comes to elegant gadget design. Here is a roundup of the latest reviews. Let us know if we missed any!
I did not post up "reviews" that were first impressions and all of the reviews were for the Verizon BlackBerry Bold 9930. Let us know in the comments if you spot any more and we will update the list! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Now Selling BlackBerry Client for Microsoft SharePoint Posted: 17 Aug 2011 07:58 AM PDT We have known for awhile now that RIM is working on a Microsoft SharePoint client for BlackBerry. There are a few third party solutions for SharePoint but RIM usually steps in when it comes to these kinds of things. Al over @CIO noticed that RIM has quietly launched the client and put up a product page on the BlackBerry website. From what we can tell the client is definitely not free and has quite a few requirements for it to work. We have no idea how much RIM is charging for the feature but I know quite a few SharePoint hooked companies that will jump at the opportunity. On the other hand I feel like RIM should have made this simply a free feature of BES Premium to give RIM yet another differentiator in the enterprise space. The SharePoint BlackBerry client allows:
The requirements are a bit complex requiring Windows Server 2003/2008 along with BES and the BlackBerry Social Networking Proxy server together with SharePoint 2007/2010 and BlackBerry devices with OS 5.0+. This new integration solution might be part of RIM's closer relationship with Microsoft recently. It should be interesting to see how it plays out. Check out more details about the BlackBerry SharePoint Client solution here. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

BlackBerry Travel Update Adds Support for New Countries Posted: 17 Aug 2011 07:01 AM PDT One of the things that has frustrated international users is the slow rollout of apps and support for their countries. BlackBerry Travel is a perfect example with is slowly adding support for more countries. This latest update to v1.1.45.99 adds support for users in Austria, Brazil, Germany and Italy which I am sure users there will appreciate. While this all still seems to be run by WorldMate as a licensed product I still think it has some great promise for RIM. I also noticed that this version of BlackBerry Travel adds support for BlackBerry OS 7 which is nice to see. You can pick up the latest version of BlackBerry Travel free in App World here. Official RIM IM Clients Updated to v2.5.85 Posted: 17 Aug 2011 06:20 AM PDT
RIM has officially updated their IM Clients to v2.5.85 this week. This is just a tiny incremental update from the v2.5.84 they released last month. This is also the version that shipped on my BlackBerry Bold 9930 so my guess is the update is for OS 7.0 but who knows. You can pick up the new versions of Google Talk, AIM, and Yahoo Messenger at the links below: Thanks to everyone who sent this in! Change Default Search to Bing in BlackBerry 7 Browser on Verizon & Other Carriers Posted: 17 Aug 2011 05:54 AM PDT We told you earlier this week that the BlackBerry 7 browser now allows you to add custom search engines and change the default search engine. What we couldn't tell you back then is that this lets you bypass the Verizon and other carriers default setting of Bing as the default browser search option and set to to whatever you want like Google or even BerryReview. This is surprisingly easy in BlackBerry OS 7. All you need to do is follow these steps:
