Free iSpeech Obama & Bush Apps For Some Good Laughs

The developers of DriveSafely, iSpeech, seem to have some free time on their hands. They just released two new apps that use their voice recognition technology for fun instead of work. They created both Obama and Bush apps that let you type any text and have Obama or Bush "read" them to you. The app actually works quite well on my PlayBook and it looks like it is available for phones too. You can also upgrade the app to be able to speak and have Obama or Bush repeat back what you say.

Check out the apps at the links below:

BlackBerry PlayBook Owner Gets Creative with DIY Case

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 02:55 PM PDT

PlaybookCover-01 PlaybookCover-06

I am always amazed with the lengths users go to create custom cases and paraphernalia for their gadgets. The latest example of an awesome custom case is a cover Graeme created for his BlackBerry PlayBook made out of a notebook with a faux crocodile-skin like cover. They simply used one they found for $8.50 at a stationary shop and glued the edges of most of the pages with wood glue and cut out a PlayBook sized hole with a craft knife and then glued the inside of the pages.

Its truly ingenious because it is both protective and nobody will assume it is anything worth stealing. Its also kind of slick to carry it around like a notebook. It took Graeme two tries to get it right (he didn't glue the pages the first time) but even then its one of the cheapest cases for the PlayBook if you have an hour to spend building it.

Tips & Tricks: Using 1 BlackBerry on 2 BES Servers….

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 12:50 PM PDT

I always enjoy bringing out the fun and unexpected, so here is another. Have you or someone you know ever wanted to manage more than one exchange account from their Blackberry? Activating your Blackberry on more than one BES is generally not common knowledge or practice, although your blackberry is definitely capable of being used on multiple BES servers and functions extremely well doing so.  When you think about the way one can currently use BIS and BES together it does make sense, to be able to do this, as BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) is for most intent and purpose, just another type of Blackberry Server.

The reason this first crossed my path, was a client’s Admin assistant had a blackberry and she was asking if there was a way to provision this device to use two corporate email accounts. For myself, having just recently completed a BES 3.5 training session, I was eager to try.  Much to the counter of the information available from RIM, as well as from the provider I worked for at the time, this functioned beautifully and we’ve been using this method in client sites, upon request, ever since. (Yes, I did say BES 3.5 as I’ve been a specialist with Blackberry products, for a long time…. :)  LOL).

Anyways, on to the fun stuff, of how to do this!

What you will need:

- 2 BES servers (Personally I have one BES and one BES Express, but really it can be any combination)

- 1 Blackberry Handheld (mentioned in case this is not obvious…….) :)

- Either BES console access or Blackberry Desktop Manager access on a machine with the second MAPI/RPC mail profile available as a seperate profile.

The First step is to activate your device on the first BES, if you do not already have an active BES on it.  You can do this through any of the usual methods of course. (Desktop, Console or Wireless)

The Next step is actually quite easy. Once your second account is prepared on the second BES you can activate it.  Personally I use the wired method to attach my Blackberry to the second server, as I can re-title the account with the desktop manager (shown below) providing easy distinction of the accounts that I am using for sending emails, creating appointmens in the calendar and such.  I has also done this with the BES console, via the assign device menu, but then you have to use other methods to distinguish the accounts in the drop-down menu’s.

The key for this type of desktop activation for the second email account, is having access to it with outlook, either via MAPI or RPC.

From the Desktop Manager click on “Device Options”

From the Enterprise Email Tab, press the drop down menu,  next to Email system and choose the Secondary Profile.

From here change the Service Name for easy identification and escape and save.

Last but not least, once the above is complete, unplug your Blackberry from the desktop machine, wait a few moments for the computer to register the disconnect and then plug your Blackberry back into the computer. Your Blackberry should now start the activation process.  If for some reason you receive the prompt to wipe your device, cancel out of that and let it continue.

You should now be able to select a “send using“ from either one of your BES acounts, as well specifying which calendar to add an appointment to or invite from.  I hope you enjoy the added functionality and usability this brings and thank you for reading. :)

Poynt just updated their PlayBook app and now their smartphone app got an update over the weekend. The latest version is 1.8.1 and is a nice update from the previous release a few months ago. The new version adds in integration for RIM's new BlackBerry Messenger 6 API's letting users share information through BBM along with Facebook, Twitter, and email. Poynt actually had their main dev at the BBM Hackathon in NYC so it is not surprise to see the update. They also threw in support for the new BlackBerry Torch 9810 in this update.

If you live in Canada, the United States, Europe and Australia you can pick up Poynt free in App World

BlackBerry Smart Card Reader Gets US Federal FIPS 120-2 Level 3 Certification

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 09:36 AM PDT

SCR2

In case you didn't think RIM's BlackBerry Smart Card Reader was secure enough RIM now has the US Federal Government standing behind it. They just announced FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certification for the smartcard badge reader. If I am not mistaken the device had FIPS 140-2 Level 2 certification for awhile but that has been updated. The cards are supposed to help government officials comply with the US Department of Defense Common Access Card program which wants mandatory reliable identification for government employees and contractors. I am guessing the new Level 3 certification will make the device an easier sell for RIM to its 1+ million US government BlackBerry users.

Check out the details below or at us.blackberry.com/ataglance/security/products/smartcardreader/

BlackBerry Smart Card Reader Achieves Advanced Security Certification for U.S. Federal Government

Waterloo, ON – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) announced today that the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader™ has achieved FIPS 140-2 certification level 3 – the highest certification achieved by any wireless smart card reader on the market. Smart cards support security programs like the U.S. Department of Defense's Common Access Card (CAC) program and the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) which calls for a mandatory, government-wide standard for secure and reliable forms of identification issued by the federal government to its employees and to the employees of federal contractors. FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) certifications are assigned by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

"Our customers value the robust security provided with BlackBerry products and services and smart card readers are particularly important within the government sector," said Scott Totzke, Senior Vice President, BlackBerry Security at Research In Motion. "This advanced certification of the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader for the U.S. Federal Government demonstrates our ongoing commitment to meet and exceed the expectations of our government customers."

The BlackBerry Smart Card Reader is designed to work with personal identification cards issued by government organizations or other high-security organizations. Users insert a smart card into this lightweight reader and wear it on a lanyard as a two-factor authentication device for secure access to BlackBerry smartphones, desktop computers and facilities.  BlackBerry smartphones and desktop computers automatically lock when the user's smart card is not in proximity.

FIPS 140-2 level 3 certification of the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader also verifies advanced security features of the smart card reader itself, such as tamper evidence and self destruction of critical security parameters upon device breach.

Australian Retailer Harvey Norman Highlights Fantastic PlayBook Sales

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 09:26 AM PDT

tabletOS_bg2

Jay pointed out this article on Twitter and it looks like the story is being picked up in the wake of all of the bad news surrounding the WebOS demise. Ben McIntosh, the head of Harvey Norman's Computers buying team, told the Australian Current that the BlackBerry PlayBook has been selling very well since its launch. According to McIntosh "Sales of the PlayBook are very, very good," and "BlackBerry has probably come from a different direction. The PlayBook was always going to be more of a niche product based on the fact that they're really targeting the BlackBerry smartphone base that's in Australia and the world."

McIntosh goes further to say that "The sales of the PlayBook have been fantastic, we've re-ordered multiple times and it's exceeded our expectations." Pretty strong words from down under!

BlackBerry WebWorks SDK for Smartphones Updated to v2.1.1

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 06:45 AM PDT

webworks-2-1-update

Good news for web developers making WebWorks app for BlackBerrys. RIM keeps pushing the platform forward and the latest update brings us to v2.1.1 since the previous update in June. The new version brings APIs and new features including a built in BlackBerry® 7 OS simulator, Web Inspector, Microphone API, Auto injection of Gears-to-HTML5 shim. Here is a breakdown of the features added:

  • BlackBerry® 7 OS simulator – a BlackBerry® Bold™ 9930 simulator running BlackBerry 7 OS device software is now included in the WebWorks SDK download.
  • Web Inspector – As promised in a previous blog post, developers can now use WebKit Web inspector to debug, test and profile Web browser or BlackBerry WebWorks application content running on a live device or simulator.
  • Microphone API – The same API that was recently made available for the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK for Tablet OS can now be used to record WAV audio files in BlackBerry WebWorks applications running on BlackBerry smartphones.
  • Auto injection of Gears-to-HTML5 shim – BlackBerry WebWorks developers that wish to use HTML5 features on BlackBerry 5.0 smartphones no longer need to manually add the Gears-to-HTML JavaScript toolkit to their projects. The BlackBerry WebWorks SDK automatically does this for you.

You can read more about the update on the DevBlog or download it here. There is also some good info on GitHub.
