FAQ: Easily Get Hebrew on your BlackBerry 7 Device (Other Devices Too!)

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 12:55 PM PDT

HEbrew BlackBerry OTA

For years now Smartmouth has been making it easy for BlackBerry users to add Hebrew fonts and keyboard to their BlackBerrys. Previously you had to reload the OS with multilingual OS that included Hebrew. Smartmouth simply extracts the language files and makes them available for OTA downloads from your device. He let me know that he has now made the Hebrew files available for BlackBerry 7 devices. I have tested it on my Verizon BlackBerry Bold 9930 and it works like a charm. He also has downloads available for other OS versions and devices.

RIM said they would release the native PIM apps and the android app player late summer. Most of you are probably aware they are notorious for pushing deadlines to the last minute. New rumors point to a September launch of those much awaited native apps. New screenshots of the PlayBook OS 2.0 help fuel that rumor. BBM Music Needs “Thumbs Up/Down” Song & User Ratings

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 10:13 AM PDT

BBM Music4 BBM Music1

I have more or less replaced my Slacker listening with BlackBerry Music since yesterday and I have to say I am impressed. I have found some great songs from BBM friends and contacts that I would never have heard otherwise. I find it interesting that my friends tend to avoid the latest Top 100 hits to define themselves and rather are choosing some classic favorites. The thing it not all of them have anywhere near my music taste or simply have bad taste… That is why I am really hoping RIM throws in some social voting options in BBM Music.

BBM Music2 BBM Music3

RIM does let you ignore songs or ignore songs from an artist that you don't like but I wish they made my preference more transparent. Wouldn't it be slick if you could see if users like the songs you selected or not? Maybe a sort of Rotten Tomatoes style "rotten meter" to show what others thought of your song. I love that it shows you how many times people listened to your songs but I want more. Simply leaving a comment on the song is just not good enough. I have been playing with the idea of using some sort of ASCII emoticon to simulate votes but don't think it will work well unless RIM integrates it natively.

I will give you a walkthrough and more in depth review of BBM Music hopefully today or next week but until then I am really liking the service. The music player puts the native BlackBerry Media Player to shame and really works nicely. I have to say RIM put quite a bit of work into the app and usability is really nice and solid especially for a beta product.

Still I am really looking for things like the ability to show what I am listening too in BBM Music on the BBM status message or be able to keep a record of the songs I liked by my friends without adding it to my songs. If you have been using BBM Music let us know what you think!

Let SugarSync Know You Want a PlayBook App Now!

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 08:55 AM PDT

sugarsync

Its no big secret that I am a big fan of SugarSync. They made my day earlier this week by adding folder sync to their BlackBerry smartphone app but there is a major hole in their BlackBerry support. They currently do not have an app for the BlackBerry PlayBook and their website seems to act up for some PlayBook users. I reached out to SugarSync to see what they had to say about PlayBook support.

SugarSync got back to us and let us know that they are still monitoring how the market reacts to the PlayBook and if they see enough demand they will develop an app. You want to know how to show SugarSync that there is demand for it? Request a PlayBook app in this thread on their forums. SugarSync told us they keep a close eye on their forums and it influences their feature development decisions.

About SugarSync's website acting up in the PlayBook browser they have been getting mixed messages. According to many customers the browser experience works fine (I would say about 90% in my experience) but some users have expressed complaints. SugarSync does not have any timelines but they are researching the issue and are investigation how they can optimize their website for the PlayBook.

So what are you waiting for? Make sure to make your voice heard in the SugarSync forums.

Soocial Syncs Your Contacts Between Multiple Sources & Your BlackBerry

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 08:01 AM PDT

all_devices

We mentioned Soocial a LONG time ago in November of 2008. Since then the service has come out of beta and really fleshed out. A friend asked me if there was a service that lets you sync your contacts between your BlackBerry, Gmail, Google Apps, and Outlook and I told him to look Soocial up. In that vein I thought it would also be worth mentioning it to all of you.

Soocial is a really slick service but the big problem is the cost. The service is free to sync up to 250 contacts between two sources. If you want to start synching more like Gmail, Outlook, Google Apps, Yahoo, Windows Live, and more you will have to pony up for a monthly plan starting at $4.99. Soocial is definitely worth a look if you need such a service for work or can live with the free plan at www.soocial.com. Otherwise check out Gist.

Possible BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 Screenshots Leak – Email, Social, & Android

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 07:16 AM PDT

playbook-os-2-0 playbook-os-2-0-2

Some purported screenshots of a BlackBerry PlayBook running OS 2.0 have surfaced from MaxPDA showing some interesting things. First of all it seems to show that you can use Exchange ActiveSync, IMAP, POP, CalDAV, & CardDAV for mail, calendar, and contacts which is a huge change for RIM. It also shows deep connections with Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The screenshots also show off an icon for the Android player. Take this all with a grain of salt but this could be very cool. It does make you wonder if the BBM icon shown is native BBM and if it will also include BES integration or it will use a different kind of BES like is rumored for the BlackBerry Colt QNX phone.

Thanks to everyone that sent this in!

Review: MEElectronics HT-21 On Ear Headphones

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 07:02 AM PDT

HP-HT21-BK-3

A couple months ago, I posted a review of MEElectronics' famous M9 in ear headphones with built in microphone. This month I had a chance to test out the HT-21 Headphones. They're kind of an in between model. They're not in ear and they're not over-ear; they're on-ear. Or "supra-aural" as the experts at MEE like to put it. They sit comfortably on your ears and, as you can see above, fold in on themselves. This saves space and allows you to put them in the included drawstring storage bag for easy transport between music-blasting sessions. Keep reading to find out how to get an exclusive discount on high quality products from MEElectronics.

HP-HT21-BK-7

I wasn't so sure about the over-ear design at first, but I really like it for long-term wear. Even with well-fitting in-ear headphones I've found that its tough to wear them for a long time comfortably.

HP-HT21-BK-2

Here's a great description of the HT-21's found on their website:

Enjoy powerful bass along with class leading clarity and a spacious presentation, extreme comfort, and the convenience of a single cable and folding headband. The supra-aural design (ear cups rest on your ears) uses ear cups that swivel to fit the shape of your head/ears and a padded, lightweight, adjustable headband that is comfortable for long term wear. The cable is designed without a split, connecting only to the left ear cup, eliminating cable tangle and frustration. Sound leakage is reduced due to the closed back design of the ear cups, so you won’t disturb your neighbors like an open backed headphone. Travel with a headphone has never been easier, as the headband folds and the ear cups swivel into a compact size perfect for storage and travel during those rare occasions you will not be listening to the HT-21.

  • Spacious, clear sound with deep and enhanced bass
  • Closed back design offers isolation and keeps the sound from disturbing your neighbors
  • Headband is adjustable to fit different sized heads
  • Ear cups swivel for comfort
  • Single cable (on the left ear cup) eliminates tangling
  • Ear cups fold in flat and into the headband for easy storage
  • Soft pouch included for storage and transport when not in use

HP-HT21-BK-4

MEElectronics has been having a really tough time keeping this model in stock. They just received a shipment and sold out immediately afterwards.

They have been gracious enough to provide a discount code for all of our readers for 20% ANY purchase at www.meelec.com. The discount is exclusive of any other promotions. Here's the code: BERRYREVIEW. Now go get yourself some quality headphones!
