Official AT&T OS 7.0.0.583 for the BlackBerry Torch 9810

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 11:51 AM PST

AT&T is notoriously late to the OS update game. I was happy to hear from one of our tipsters, Zooby, that AT&T has released OS 7.0.0.583 for their US exclusive Torch 9810. Most of us are actually waiting for OS 7.1 to officially release for these devices but until then this update hopefully helps. The previous AT&T update for the Bold 9900 greatly improved the battery life so hopefully this one does the same for the Torch 9810.

Download OS 7.0.0.583 for the Torch 9810 @BlackBerry.com

Warning: This OS will not install on any other BlackBerry besides the one mentioned above. If you do not know how to upgrade your BlackBerry OS please start by reading this step by step guide. How To: Factory Reset/UnBrick a BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 10:21 AM PST

With all of the PlayBooks floating around now after the “Mega-Sale”, it is important to know some of the basics in case something goes wrong.  Whether we want to or not sometimes we need to Factory Reset our devices, and reload everything from scratch.  Or worst case scenario we go to use our device and it is bricked.

I will start with the disclaimer, following the directions that follow, you will lose all data you have on your PlayBook.  If your device is not a brick, you can easily back it up in Desktop Manager the same way you would a BlackBerry phone.

To start you will need to turn off your PlayBook.  From there start Desktop Manager, and connect your powered off PlayBook to the PC.  After a few moments an error message will show up on the screen similar to the one used in the title.

Click ‘Update’ and wait for Desktop Manager to do its thing. This process could take a while, so grab some popcorn. The whole process should be under an hour, but can vary. Once completed it will state it is finished and you can unplug your playbook. From here you will have to do the initial setup like when you first removed it from the box. Enjoy your factory fresh PlayBook!

RIM Showing Off BlackBerry OS 10 @ Mobile World Congress?

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 09:37 AM PST

PlayBook With Torch

Well we know that RIM has already committed to shipping BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 by the end of February but now we have a new twist. RIM PR sent out an email prepping for Mobile World Congress which is happening in Barcelona from February 27th until March 1st. They confirm that 2012 is "The year of BlackBerry 10" and they will "be showcasing the capabilities of our future operating system." Some are taking that to mean that RIM will actually show off BlackBerry OS 10 or even devices but I doubt that. The only thing that has me truly wondering is if RIM will simply rename the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 to BlackBerry 10…

Simple Browser gets updated in both versions to 1.0.6

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 07:55 AM PST

If you are unfamiliar with Simple Browser, it is a great 3rd party browser for the BlackBerry PlayBook.   If you are looking into an alternative to Browser, head over to AppWorld and try out the FREE version. I would personally recommend buying the paid version, it allows for tabbed browsing,  as well as some customizable features like custom bookmarks.  The paid version can be picked up here for $1.99.

Free Opensource Lemma Twitter App for the BlackBerry PlayBook (WebWorks)

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 05:28 AM PST

Lemma PlayBook

We mentioned Lemma a few months ago when it launched as an opensource (GitHub) free Twitter client for the BlackBerry PlayBook by Sully Syed (@sullysyed) built on WebWorks. Since then it has been updated a few times with a major update to v1.1.x this month. Terry let me know that Lemma announced the update on their blog which details the new changes in this version. It uses the new bbUI.js toolkit released by RIM's Tim Neil which gives it a nice performance boost and a complete makeover.

Here is the full change log for Lemma v1.1 (v1.1.2 is now in App World)

  • All new interface: New colours, new icons, and far less cluttered
  • Vastly improved scrolling performance for the timeline
  • Smoother page transitions
  • Improved Compose Tweet/Reply With Message interface (far less laggy)
  • Added "View In App" functionality, powered by the Readability v0.4.4 algorithm
  • A new user tutorial for those new to Lemma and its unique, list-based take on Twitter

You can pick up this new version of Lemma free in App World or check out the source code and more at www.lemmaforplaybook.com
