What RIM is Up Against? (In Vino Veritas)

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 10:54 PM PST

 En vino Veritas

I hate to categorize TechCrunch as "The Media" but RIM definitely has a perception problem/bias with some media outlets. Its almost like anything RIM does whether good or bad gets a negative spin. This was clearly made apparent in a live Ustream by Andrew Keen and Jordan Crook from TechCrunch at CES yesterday. As the old Latin phrase says In vino veritas ("in wine there is the truth"). You can clearly see what I mean if you skip to the 40 or 41 minute mark in the video below.

Personally I think this stems from RIM's Canadian roots where they are just too damn nice. They need to start kicking ass and taking names with back to back launches starting with PlayBook OS 2.0 to BB10. They need both actions and words to turn the tide.

OS 2.0 Email Walkthrough as well as Calendar, Contacts and BES App Deployement

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 01:09 PM PST

Some of the features that we all feel the PlayBook should have been launched with are now rising to the top, and RIM has chosen to showcase them at CES2012. We have already seen the demo videos from RIM but  CrackBerry has recorded some of their own from the show floor that give you more perspective. Definitely worth checking out.

First you will see a wonderful video on the email client in the works, it really looks like they worked hard on it, and the integration looks over the top!  From there it showcases the contacts and the calendar.

The second video shows how BES admins can deploy and authorize apps on corporate PlayBooks.  Previous with BES phones it was easy to do, but the PlayBook proved as a challenge as everything needs AppWorld.

I wont spoil anymore of it for you, here are the two videos!

On a side note, see if you can see where there is a BBX/L-series mention in the first video… a little Easter egg maybe planted for us?

Slacker has offered some custom ESPN sports content for awhile now which they claim has been well received since they announced it in September. Now they are taking things one step further with the addition of live streaming of ESPN Radio Shows and sporting events for Plus and Premium subscribers of Slacker. This is an interesting way for Slacker to differentiate themselves from other streaming services.

The only catch is that the ESPN Audio live shows and sporting events are only currently available from the Web with mobile support coming soon. The regular ESPN Radio station remains free for all users while Slacker Radio Plus and Slacker Premium Radio subscribers have access to the "full ESPN experience, including two highly customizable myESPN Radio sports stations, live shows and select sporting events. "Since offering customizable ESPN Audio content, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, but many listeners have requested live sports," said Jonathan Sasse, senior vice president of marketing at Slacker. "This new feature is yet another example of how Slacker is combining the best elements of traditional radio with our listeners' demand for personalization of music, news, sports and more."

Epson Artisan 730 All-in-One Printer

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 10:30 AM PST

One of the most popular printer companies in existence has brought us to a whole new level: printing from our phones. The Epson 730 printer allows users to not only print via built-in wi-fi capabilities from your computer, but also directly from the most popular phones in use today.

First Impression: The printer is very sleek with an easy to read panel and a nicely sized screen.. It is not bulky or odd shaped – just square and flat. The box contains the printer, 6 different-colored ink cartridges and a power cord. No USB. It was simple and easy to set up to my computer and I didn’t have to ask my techie husband for help! I love that it connects via wi-fi and requires no extraneous cords. In my small Manhattan apartment, I am very particular about what gets hidden and what can be displayed. This printer I am happy to have out (if I had the space for it – now it sits tucked away).

Printing:

After a pain-free hookup to my laptop and my desktop, I attempt to print. It flies! Anything I print out, takes mere seconds. There is a built in capability to print double-sided (which I am a huge fan of, if only to lessen my paper usage) and it’s so quick! I immediately print out a slew of newly-taken photos and I am surprised at how smooth it comes out – not pixelated at all. My only concern is the color saturation on the photo, which makes the picture darker than it was on the screen and very intense. I print the same photo out on regular printer paper and the colors are the opposite – too light and desaturated.  After a few more photo printouts and some minor tweaks to the settings, I am more than satisfied. I also appreciate the edge-to-edge printing when using an already-cut 4×6 paper and it actually does take only 10 seconds. It’s amazing how clear and bright and fluid the pictures are… and they came from my photo printer! This is due to Epson’s patented MicroPiezo technology, the same used by professional wide format printers and different from any other inkjet printer on the market. In thermal heating, used by most consumer inkjets, tiny resistors create heat which vaporizes ink to create a bubble, then pushed out of a nozzle onto the paper. Epson printers employ a piezoelectric crystal in each nozzle that vibrates, changing size & shape, based on electric currents received and forces tiny droplets of ink onto the paper from the nozzle. Importantly, it is the different size droplets that allow for finer detailed printing allowing sharper, grain-free photo prints with smoother tonal transitions.

Scanning:

There are several ways of getting the printer to scan, be it from the computer for more detailed options or a quick scan directly from the printer’s touch panel. When I scanned a small 3×5 photo, I tried a few options to obtain better photo quality and found the tweaking menu on the PC relatively easy to use. From the front panel alone there are many ways of scanning something: scanning to PC, to PDF, to e-mail, to memory card/USB flash drive or to just convert to coloring book pages. I did try that latter option for my amusement and it works. The idea of using just the front panel and avoiding the printer middle man is great and very handy for all options.

Epson Connect:

In addition to the high-quality printing and scanning, there is a super cool feature included in this model (and just one other in the Epson Printer line): printing directly from your phone, no computer required. There are programs available to download for your non-Blackberry devices and thankfully, Epson did not leave us Blackberry users in the dark. You can e-mail your printer to print something for you! I went online to Epson.com/connect, created an account, followed a simple setup and within minutes I was typing away on my BB sending a photo to my printer. The response time was less than a minute before I received my Epson Print e-mail alert and heard the printer start up. [When logged in to Epson Connect, there are ways to customize who can print and who can be notified, among other options]. While it is true that anyone with an e-mail address can send a print job (with permission) to this printer, Epson highlights this option for Blackberry users, so no mobile device (with data) is left out.

Random fact: there is a USB port located on the printer for printing from or saving to a USB connected-device, which also doubles a phone/device charger.

Cost: Amazon ~$138

It is important to note that the cost of ink for any Epson printer is slightly lower than ink for other consumer inkjets in the same class because they have fixed print heads built in to the printer. Since the head need not be replaced every time the ink runs out, you are not always purchasing ink with cheap disposable heads and the head itself can be more precise than a disposable one, which typically requires no calibration.

Bottom Line

Worth it. Love it. For it’s simplicity in appearance and usage and high quality results from anything I attempted to do, as well as it’s superior speeds. Anyone who needs to have a printer in their home should consider this one and given the price and abilities, it’s truly great.

Some More Details Slip on PlayBook OS 2.0 & BlackBerry 10

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 07:55 AM PST

PlayBook Native Preview

Thomas and Tashanna pointed out this interesting writeup by PCMag (via OSBB I think) that has some great tidbits in it. They talked with Marty Mallick, a senior director of business development at RIM, about the PlayBook and a few other updates and some interesting details and confirmations came out. Here is a quick summary:

  • "…there will be touch BB10 devices as well as QWERTY BB10 devices. Both of those will exist." They may not have the same resolution but they will have the same aspect ratio.
  • PlayBook 2.0 "can be looked at as a stepping stone towards BB10. It starts to introduce the new UI elements"
  • PlayBook 2.0 features the ability to use your BlackBerry smartphone as a "remote control" for the PlayBook. Malik says this means you can use your BlackBerry keyboard to type on your PlayBook or use your BlackBerry as a mouse.
  • You will also be able to choose the option to open a website on your PlayBook from the BlackBerry smartphone browser.
  • PlayBook OS 2.0 will bring email, calendar, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn as we have seen in previous leaks.

Malik also told PCMag that more BlackBerry 10 details will show up at the BlackBerry Europe DevCon in mid-February and more details at Mobile World Congress in late February. They did not specify when PlayBook OS 2.0 will launch…

Visa Europe Approves NFC Payments on Latest BlackBerry 7 Devices

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 07:28 AM PST

verizon-bold-9930-nfc

Visa Europe has certified the NFC packing GSM BlackBerry 7 devices for NFC payments using the Visa PayWave app. This certification is for the BlackBerry Bold 9900, Bold 9790, Curve 9360, and Curve 9380 along with the Samsung Galaxy II and LG Optimus. These devices are all GSM because the CDMA variants don't get much traction in Europe but I am waiting for Visa to approve it in the US. I am not quite sure what it means but supposedly these certified devices "host the Visa payWave application on a secure SIM card and feature NFC."

You can check out the whole announcement in Visa's press release. Anybody else waiting for mobile payments to hit NFC BlackBerrys?

Xploding Boxes Updating to v3.0, Adds 20 Levels

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 05:45 AM PST

Eric at Ebscer emailed me last week to let me know that Xploding Boxes 3.0 has been submitted to AppWorld. This minor update adds 20 new levels, bringing the grand total up to a whopping 260. PlayBook owners will also see improved load times in the new version.

Xploding Boxes is a simple, yet maddeningly challenging puzzle game available for most BlackBerry devices including the PlayBook. A single purchase will get you all 260 levels of the game (the free trial only give you 25) across all devices using the same BBID, which makes it a huge bargain at just $2.99. I have it on my 9900 and my PlayBook, and I can’t wait to bang my head against the new levels!

Look for v3.0 to hit AppWorld today or tomorrow, and make your ‘berry Xplode! (In a good way!)

***UPDATE*** It’s rolling out now. Don’t forget to ALT+RST if AppWorld doesn’t offer you the new version. I had to do it several times.
