RIM’s Newest Board Member Prem Watsa is Betting Big on RIM

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 02:59 AM PST

 Prem Watsa

A friend of mine pointed out to me that the addition of Prem Watsa (Wikipedia) as an independent board member on RIM's board may be more than a simple appointment. As of September he was the fourth largest investor in RIM after Primecap Management and both Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie. Watsa was announced as a new board member after Mike and Jim stepped down. Watsa runs Fairfax Financial Holdings and is sort of the Warren Buffett of Canada. He told Bloomberg that he might buy more shares of RIM now that he is a board member.

Just like Buffett, Watsa is known for perceiving value where the market may not. According to the Globe & Mail he has a history of tackling companies in trouble and turning them around. Watsa is usually very reserved but he is stepping into the spotlight for RIM which makes me wonder what he has in store…

Watsa specifically told the Financial Post that "Mike asked me to join the board" and he recieved assurances that his "technology genius" would not leave the firm. He even went further to say that "Mike's not going anywhere…. If he were going to retire, I would not have gone on the board."

Anybody else think there is something going on behind the scenes?

Rumored BlackBerry Roadmap for 2012/2013 With BB10 Phones & HSPA+ PlayBook

Posted: 24 Jan 2012 09:11 AM PST

BlackBerry_Logo_Preferred_Colour_R

As usual you always have to take rumors with a grain of salt. I know for a fact that this latest rumor from the BoyGenius is not all inclusive for 2012 but it does give you a better idea of what is coming from RIM in 2012/2013. This rumor confirms previous ones that have a HSPA+ PlayBook with a 1.5Ghz processor coming in May/June. That is simply a slightly updated version of the current PlayBook OMAP4 processor that we mentioned previously. The BlackBerry London is supposedly coming in September along with a QWERTY Bold in December.

Here is what the BoyGenius is hearing for the next 15 months from RIM:

  • RIM plans to introduce two new Curve smartphones within the next few months: the BlackBerry Curve 9230 and the BlackBerry Curve 9320. The 9230 will be an EDGE smartphone and the Curve 9320 will be an HSPA device.
  • While we don't have confirmation on the size, we have heard that RIM will introduce a new PlayBook tablet with 1.5GHz processor, built-in HSPA+ 42Mbps cellular data support and NFC around May or June.
  • RIM's BlackBerry London is still on track for a September launch.
  • There is now another BlackBerry 10 smartphone in the works that will launch as part of RIM's Bold series. The phone features a touchscreen display and QWERTY keyboard, and it is planned for a December release.
  • A QWERTY slider running BlackBerry 10 has been talked about for the first quarter of 2013.

Now if only Thorsten Heins can start bringing in those release dates… Also their LTE PlayBook is mysteriously missing from this rumor.

RIM Releases OS 7.1 BES IT Policies Including One for SecureKey Browser Plug-In

Posted: 24 Jan 2012 07:15 AM PST

SecureKey

JF let us know that RIM has posted up a knowledge base article with the new IT policy definitions for OS 7.1 that BES administrators can import into their installations. It includes six new IT policies that can be constrained on OS 7.1 devices with some interesting new additions. Five of the definitions are not anything drastically new but they do mention a new SecureKey Browser Plug-in. Here is the full list of new IT Policy definitions which can be downloaded here:

  • Disable FM Radio
  • Application Installation Methods
  • Application Installation from Specific URLs Only
  • SecureKey Browser Plug-in.
  • IETF WebSocket Connections in Browser
  • Override Hotspot APN Information

From what I have been able to find the SecureKey browser plug-in seems to be part of a two factor authentication service that is being championed by a few companies. Here is how CrunchBase describes the solution:

SecureKey enables service providers to use contactless cards or NFC mobile phones currently deployed to customers as a "what you have" factor to implement strong online mutual authentication. Thus, in addition to "something the customer knows", i.e. username and password, the service provider can ensure that the customer has also authenticated with something the customer has in-hand before connecting to the secure online service.

In order to authenticate, the customer simply touches his/her contactless form factor to a personal SecureKey token. The cryptographic capabilities of the token enables mutual authentication with the service provider's web server using industry standard x.509 digital certificates using SSL/TLS secure communication protocol. This process is completely invisible to the customer. When authentication is successfully completed, a secure, encrypted session is established between the user and the online service.

In other words SecureKey utilizes NFC in the latest BlackBerrys to offer up a form of two factor authentication. For example, employees could access certain internal systems by swiping a NFC card against the NFC back of their BlackBerrys. Alternatively it could be used by credit card companies to allow you to checkout on a website by swiping your credit card against the back of a BlackBerry. Check out more details at www.securekey.com

Great Analysis of Top US Carriers & Their LTE Spectrum Holdings

Posted: 24 Jan 2012 06:57 AM PST

1_23_2012 1_56_36 PM

I have been meaning to do the research into the different 4G spectrum holdings of carriers in the US when AT&T clamored that they needed more spectrum in their bid for T-Mobile. When that deal fell through I shelved the story but I am glad to see that Brad Reed from Network World did the full research. He dug into the top US carriers and charted out their spectrum holdings and constraints. He explains why Verizon is best set for a faster LTE rollout and what AT&T and Sprint are waiting on for theirs.

If you are interested in the future of LTE in the US I highly recommend reading all of Reed's analysis here

Need For Speed: Undercover For BlackBerry PlayBook Updated To v2.1

Posted: 24 Jan 2012 06:50 AM PST

Electronic Arts has updated their free offering of Need For Speed: Undercover for the BlackBerry PlayBook to version 2.1. This update contains no change log, and it is theorized that it may simply be an update to prepare for the PBOS 2.0 release due in February. I have seen reports that it loads a bit faster, but no other changes have been found as yet, so if you find any differences, please post in the comments and let us know!

Check it out in App World here

FileScout & FileScout Lite Updated With Improved Zip Handling in v2.8

Posted: 24 Jan 2012 05:38 AM PST

Filescout

My favorite BlackBerry file manager, FileScout, just got a nice update to v2.8.0.1. This new update brings new goodies but mostly improves the ZIP (Aka file archive) handling features of the app. EmacBerry has rewritten the zip file handling code which has led to some nice benefits like removing the limitation on file sizes of zip archives. The only remaining limitation is that it does not read password protected ZIP files.

You can pick up the latest version of FileScout Premium in App World or you can pick up the donationware FileScout lite free from EmacBerry.

Here is a change log for v2.8.0.1:

  • FileScout & FileScoutLite ZIP-file handing have been re-written
  • With the new v2.8.0.1 build there should be no limitation concerning the file size of ZIP-Archives that you could browse or de-compress with FileScout (or FileScoutLite).
  • When you unzip a large (e.g. 100MB+) archive, please have in mind that you still hold a mobile device in your hands (and not a PC or Mac equipped with a SSD). Most of the time that is required (to process an ZIP-Archive) will be needed for the actual reading (of the compressed stream) and the writing (of the de-compressed data).
  • The new build will also report almost instantly, if an archive can’t be read by the application (probably cause it is corrupted/broken).
  • Please note that even if most of the ZIP code have been rewritten FileScout is still not able to read password protected archives – sorry.
