RIM’s Official Statement on Legal Dispute with Kodak

Know About PatentsRIM and Kodak have been at odds with each other over patent issues for quite some time. If you don’t know what I mean, you can check our extensive archive of articles on the subject.

Apparently, the tech media has been covering the latest episode in this long story including a postponement of the trial. With so much bad press being written about RIM lately, it makes sense that RIM went out of their way to let us know, from an official source, that RIM did not seek the postponement. Here is the official note:

RIM Statement:

RIM is ready and willing to proceed to trial today but Kodak asked the court to delay the trial until August.  Moreover, RIM is willing to pay for its use of valid patents–RIM pays hundreds of millions of dollars annually for patent licenses. But RIM believes that Kodak’s main patent in this dispute, the ’218, is neither valid nor infringed and RIM’s position was supported by one of the nation’s most respected patent judges, the International Trade Commission’s Chief Judge Luckern.

Somehow I suspect this is not the last episode of the RIM vs. Kodak saga.

Since BlackBerry OS 5.0 or so you have been able to set multiple alarms through the calendar but some users prefer the simplicity of an app. That is where Multi Alarms excels. Two Apps That Play Flash Video Files (.FLV) On Your PlayBook

While the PlayBook does support Flash in the browser there is no easy way to play Flash Video Files (video files that end with .flv) on your PlayBook. These videos are usually downloaded by users from streaming video sites like YouTube so it is nice to be able to play them on the PlayBook without having to convert them. Turns out that it is pretty easy as long as you have the right app. Don let me know that there are currently two apps in App World that promise to let you play .FLV files on your PlayBook.

ScrapBook for the PlayBook gets 2 new looks

It was only a few weeks ago when ScrapBook was last updated, and the team over at RIM is still hard at it.  This time they have  added a couple of new themes, Shabby Chick and 8-bit.  If you already have ScrapBook, just open up the Packs section within the app and you will find them there.  If you don’t you can grab SrapBook for the PlayBook  free from AppWorld.

Anastasiadis BlackBerry Concept Design Will Bring Tears to Your Eyes

Seriously those will be good tears. I am hoping RIM is paying attention to the new Anastasiadis BlackBerry Concept design posted up by Kevin @CrackBerry. The concept was created by industrial designer John Anastasiadis who happens to also be a BlackBerry fan. This is his version of a dream BlackBerry that really blows your mind and makes you want to jump a few years into the future to have one of these… if they are ever made.

John's envisioned device includes:

  • Wrap around screen. This allows you to incorporate soft-keys on the underside for gaming, navigation, etc.
  • The asymmetrical shape allows you to know the orientation of the phone (while holding) without having to look at it.
  • There is one hard button that serves multiple functions (screen lock, picture taking, etc.)
  • The phone has some artificial intelligence that can predict if you intended a command. For example, sometimes while using an iPhone it will slip out of my hand, causing me to grab for it any which way I can, thus hitting all sorts of buttons on the screen.
  • The front and back cameras are behind the screen. The screen will illuminate to act as the flash.

Anybody else thinking that RIM needs to hire John to help them tweak the next BlackBerry 10 phones? The only issue I have is the lack of a physical keyboard and an indicator light…

Nyan Cat Gets its Own BlackBerry Smartphone Game

In case you missed it Nyan Cat is a YouTube video that became a internet sensation last year. It was a combination of a Japanese pop song together with an animated cat with the body of a poptart flying through space and leaving a rainbow trail behind. I still don't quite get it but hey to each his own. Well now we even have a Nyan Cat BlackBerry smartphone game thanks to GameGator.

The new Nyan Cat game has you flying through space collecting stars and blowing up asteroids and UFOs in all their 8-bit goodness. Sound like something you have been dying to do? Then head on over to App World and pick up Nyan Cat for $0.99.

Free Sokoban Game from Spice for BlackBerry Smartphones

In case you have not noticed recently I am sort of hooked on puzzle games particularly sokoban games. Spice just released a free Sokoban game that promises to bring the classic Sokoban puzzle experience to the PlayBook. This Sokoban game has you are moving the boxes around the maze to get them in the right location. It has 100 built in levels for you to test your skills and enjoy.

Sokoban is available free in App World for a range of BlackBerry smartphones.

Somyeol Deluxe is a fun Puzzle Game for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Brain Connected let us know about their "2D Puzzle Platformer" called Somyeol that they have just ported to the BlackBerry PlayBook. The game sort of reminds me of lemmings mixed with a side scrolling platformer like Mario Bros. and has you guiding these cute Somyeol to safety and their rocket to take them home. There are a bunch of different types of Somyeol and tools you have to utilize to make your way through the obstacles. The game play is actually fun but hampered by the control mechanism which is a bit clunky and hopefully gets tweaked in the future. You can check out this cross platform trailer below to see how the gameplay works:

Is RIM Blazing The Trail for HTML5 Mobile Development for Developers?

In case you have not been paying attention RIM is making a huge focus on mobile browser/web development and HTML5 as a platform for the BlackBerry PlayBook OS and BlackBerry 10. A friend of mine sent me a great article by Sencha listing their 2012 HTML5 wishlist and it was interesting to see that their number one wish for "Better Mobile Browser Debugging" is something the BlackBerry PlayBook has done since launch and now BlackBerry smartphones have it too. As somebody once told me the best way to debug a Website/HTML5 App for any mobile platform is on the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Other things Sencha highlighted is WebGL which is coming in BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 next month along with compliance and standardization across browsers for HTML5 support. On that front the BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet OS 1.0 still holds its own on HTML5Test rankings and the upcoming OS 2.0 PlayBook beta outranks all the tablet competition. Better yet the latest PlayBook OS 2.0 beta improves things even further with a score of 342.

If you are a web/HTML5 developer I am really curious what you think of RIM's efforts in this direction. RIM has yet to release any of their own apps as HTML5 WebWorks apps but they are pushing strongly in that direction. Let us know what you think!
